I think it is important that we properly divide the Word when it comes to who we really are and what we really do.
We have been made the righteousness of God in Christ.

2 Cor 5:21 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Since God never sinned, is not currently sinning and will never sin if we have His righteousness then those same things can be said of us as well. Most of Romans and indeed most of the NT tries to convince us that we are who God says we are and not who we appear to be.

It is imperative that we realize that we are in fact a SPIRIT who has a soul and that soul currently lives in a fleshy body. The flesh is and always will be wicked until we get our glorified bodies at a later date that is yet to be determined( many, many posts about that elsewhere).

It is only when we start to identify with our true self (spirit) that we can walk in the light of the truth of who God says we are.

I realize this is a very, very condensed version of a very, very difficult teaching and I would recommend reading Romans especially Romans 6,7 and 8 and looking at those writings from a point of view that we are indeed a sinless spirit that already resides in Heaven (Phi 3:20). Again, we are going through a process of sanctification in our souls that our flesh does not want but our spirits are secure and hidden in Christ forever.
Col 3:3
3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

This is the gospel of Jesus that we love God 1st and each other as we love ourselves. We can only do that once we know our true worth and that we are ourselves loved by God. I is only when we come to rely 100% on God for our righteousness that we can really love others much less love ourselves.

We must stop thinking of ourselves as sinners and start to believe we are who God says we are so that we can then reflect the love Jesus has shown us to others. Again, this is a very hard truth to accept but it is key to following Jesus as He would have us follow Him.

I find myself wondering whether Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes before or after God rebuked his idolatry.

the mix of wisdom and cynicism is intriguing.

Ecclesiastes in not New Testament truth. It is simply a declaration that all human works done by the natural man are VANITY. It makes no reference to all the works done by those who are spiritual men and serving Christ. It is interesting that the cults love to quote their false teachings from Ecclesiastes, but ignore New Testament truth.

Pretty sure Miri is NOT in a cult. Also nothing wrong with asking questions about any part of the bible. This is how we "study to show oneself approved" and is also good for fellowship. We must always remember that all Christians are one body in Christ and when one is put down we all are put down.

1 Cor 12:25-26 25That there should be no schism in the body; but thatthe members should have the same care one for another. 26And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.

That said I do agree that Ecclesiastes is not NT truth, I would just ask that you disseminate this information in a more...compassionate way. Thank you.

How did you come up with this? No one in putting anyone down. I have simply commented on the nature of the book of Ecclesiastes, and how it appeals to the cults. Miri should study it like any other book and see what can be extracted from it.

I would recognize it even if you hadn't clued us in cause I particularly like this book

probably my favorite verse is:

All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again. 1:7

I like how it sounds in the KJ too but before someone here says I am KJ only, I am multi faceted in my preferences haha

people haven't changed one iota since it was written either. only thing changed is being able to accept Jesus and have the Holy Spirit in us

people do still follow their own downward path and none more so than self righteous Christians who have to constantly keep reminding everyone of how wonderful they are

I'm sorry that people do not seem able to just take something the way it was intended

Romans 7:17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

Romans 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with my mind I myself serve the law of God: but with the flesh the law of sin.

Lots of interesting replies. :)

Its a good while since I read Ecclesiastes, I remember reading it
and thinking "oh well lets read something happy now"!

But oddly as Ive get older I think I can see exactly where Solomon is
coming from. He had everything, riches, women (lots of women), people to
do his bidding, yet even he realised this life is all vanity.

The more we strive for and gain, the more we need. It's like it's the
striving itself which makes life interesting, the chase. Rather than the human
goal.

Its God who makes the difference, yet sin has separated people from
the one who makes the difference. I wonder what he would have written
if he had been able to write something during the early church days
following the resurrection of Jesus. I think I will ask Solomon that
when I meet him.

Its good to read Ecclestiastes it puts life in our vain attempts at self
sufficiency into perspective, it emphasises our poor attempt
at trying to make our own happiness and way in the world.

You know its absolutely true how nothing in this world satisfies we see it
daily around us. People turning to drugs and drink, sex and possessions to
try to find happiness.

In the right circumstances it could be a good book to use to
witness to others. To show them Jesus changes everything. That's what I
am getting from it as I read through it. :)

Romans 6

15What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. 16Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? 17But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. 18Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. 19I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
20For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. 21What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. 22But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Obeyed from the heart..

Not even that we should judge each other but we know who is Good and without sin.. so that is where we build our House.

For we all are to be judged and I know I want to be under Grace and at liberty.. but not to excuse my flesh but to Grow in Grace and knowledge of Christ.. for there is no good work that can lead me to the gate.. No I will look to the Good Shepherd the Bishop of my soul.

I think that is a very insightful observation

I think Solomon, and we need to remember it is said he was the most intelligent man of his time, was into some deep introspection

good stuff

You have to take what Solomon says in Ecclesiastes with a grain of salt as he was obviously seriously depressed. Everything that he wrote is truthfully stated but not everything he wrote is a statement of truth. In the end his many wives and concubines lead him away from God. For the wisest man who ever lived he made many bad choices that ultimately led to his downfall.
