Towhat extent do we have freedom of speech under God?

Morespecifically, what are we allowed to say under God, that we don't endup in hot water or worse? For God is not going to silence us as welive. Whatever we say now, will be considered on out judgment day,and by then it would be too late to stifle ourselves before we sayanything. Since Adam and Eve ate from the forbidden fruit, we aregiven free reign in our actions...it's a matter of which of thoseactions, including speech, will condemn us.

Also,as most of us are governed, the governing authorities most favoredunder God are those that rule with Him in mind, so in the matter offree speech they reflect what we may obtain from the Scriptures.

So,to start with, we are not stopped from saying anything, except whatwe might say that would cause harm to others or cause others tostumble. Ephesians 4:29 says, “Let no corrupting talk come out ofyour mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits theoccasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Similarly,Ecclesiastes 10:12 says “The words of a wise man's mouth win himfavor, but the lips of a fool consume him.”

Someof our politicians and world leaders have put on a poor show in thatregard. One of those leaders apparently rules without God in mind, and the other, although he makes a show of going to church andperhaps entertains some clergymen, is only making a show of it. Jesushas warned us of those who impress others by attending a House ofWorship, yet while they seem to love God with their clothes and theirappearances, they have left out loving God with their hearts. Souls, might and minds. We have politicians who in their very words deceivethose who rely on them for their well-being, as those politicians sayone thing but the evidence points to the contrary.

Andwhat of our leaders who call other leaders names like 'Crooked...''Lying...' (you fill in the blanks) and 'Rocket Man'? What good doesreferring to those people by these names accomplish?

Andwhat of those in hate groups who by their words denigrate others? Youthink God is in their hearts, despite the fact that you might seethem in a house of worship, standing or kneeling when called upon bythe clergyman and reading responsively from the Good Book?

1Peter 2:16 says, “Live as people who are free, not using yourfreedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.”Most of us have some idea of what living as servants of God entails. It's not too hard to understand. Under Jesus, if you love eachotherand you give God the respect and gratitude in your daily living, youare doing well indeed. When you hear the words of someone talking, beit a leader, a neighbor, a friend, a relative or someone sitting nearyou on a bus or train, you can wonder if in their words they are atthe moment living as a servant of God or as the servant of evil. Wemay not judge, but we can discern.

This is from the site: Christianity.

What is the scriptural basis for “Love God and do whatever you please”?

This quote has been attributed to St. Augustine, referring to what he said in a sermon on 1 John 4:4-12:

See what we are insisting upon; that the deeds of men are only discerned by the root of charity. For many things may be done that have a good appearance, and yet proceed not from the root of charity. For thorns also have flowers: some actions truly seem rough, seem savage; howbeit they are done for discipline at the bidding of charity. Once for all, then, a short precept is given you: Love, and do what you will: whether you hold your peace, through love hold your peace; whether you cry out, through love cry out; whether you correct, through love correct; whether you spare, through love do you spare: let the root of love be within, of this root can nothing spring but what is good.

It's been paraphrased as:

Love God and do whatever you please: for the soul trained in love to God will do nothing to offend the One who is Beloved.

I've heard people just use the first half without the full expression, usually in a flippant way, but I think Augustine may be onto something here. We certainly get enough discussion about what God wants us to do or things along that line. Augustine seems to think that if we love God we aren't going to offend him and so don't need any "rules". Jesus seems to me to agree with him when he said:

Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

I'd like to hear the scripture that is used to support this quote of Augustine's.

The only thing(s) I can think of Willie are:

Rom 13: 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

Gal 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

We can also choose to give up our "rights" to freedom of speech in order to bring honor and glory to God, and encouragement/love to others.

So well said by Willie.

[for me anyway] it is really very simple: we must deny our own will, and learn to not think above that which is written; and all secular matter's should not matter to those that truly follow the Lord Jesus Christ, knowing that all such worldly issues are temporal.

Towhat extent do we have freedom of speech under God?

According to Scripture we have full freedom of speech to preach the Gospel to every creature and then make disciples of those who are saved (Mark 16:15,16; Matthew 28:18-20). Furthermore, within the churches, Christians have freedom of speech not only to encourage others (1 Thess 5:11,14) but to rebuke those who need a rebuke (2 Tim 2:15; 4:2).

For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.

For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.

Under G-d we have the right and RESPONSIBILITY to say anything according to Scripture. Praying in the name of Y-shua/Jesus! In public. Having Bible studies on university campiouses. Now that means speaking up against homosexuality; the right to deny services to same sex couples if I have a business. Fighting for ALL "Christian" values. The Ten Commandments. Read our Bibles openly at work, even say we will not vote for a person who wants women to legally murder their children (abortion). Call radical Islam, RADICAL ISLAM.

The biggest freedom that a Christian has is to do the right thing - a precious freedom not attainable by the unsaved...

BTW...
Freedom of speech is in the form of talking with the mouth. It is not breaking of windows, burning the flag, marching and screaming obscenities, and literally knocking other people down as demonstrations and fights are instigated. The founding fathers wanted the public to express their views in relationship to the making of laws by the congress. Freedom of speech is to educate government, especially if they are too ignorant to know what is right.

With that said, how many of us know that the constitution of the United States (the 1st amendment) doesn't endorse "separation of church and state?" In opposition it only says that the government will make no law in the establishment of any religion. In other words, the first Continental Congress was emphatically against a denominational religious government.

The right government is identified by this...
"Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this ( Isaiah 9:7)

The wrong government is identified by this...
The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities." (2 Peter 2:9-10)

Does this sound familiar as we turn the TV on and listen to today’s news? We instigate separation and chaos by what we call "freedom of speech" but is actually slavery to lawless divisiveness. Should not the true church endorse the principles of righteous government to the elected officials of the United States, or have we taught for too long that God's righteous government is a thing of the Biblical past? Or are we telling ourselves that we are ill-equipped because none of us are perfect?

It isn’t us that we should be focused on concerning perfection. There is only One good, and that's the Father in heaven, the Almighty God. He is the One who gave the instructions of righteous governing, and properly identifies how "freedom of speech" is supposed to work with righteousness and boldness.

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, but only what is useful for building others up." What is wholesome? It is what is nutritious to the soul. Your talk should be full of nutrients for others' growth.
