why do they not have them? and if they are out there where are they? if a protestant wanted to walk away from the civilized world and devote themselves full time where would they go?

Jesus instructed us to get ourselves out there, "among 'em", not to hole up in a monastery.

Good question. Probably has something to do with the reformation and Protestants eschewing anything seen as Catholic, and since there has always been a very strong monastic tradition in the Catholic church, I would imagine Protestants want nothing to do with it.

I was allowed to become a novice Oblate of Saint Benedict without needing to be a member of nor in communion with the Roman Catholic Church, but being an Oblate is much different than living IN a monastery.

Actually the Church of England (supposedly Protestant) has a monastic order. Are you looking to go into a monastery or what?

If a bunch of Christian men gifted with celibacy wanted to live together and not swear vows, I don't see a problem with that.

Someone already mentioned it. I'd heard there were Anglican monasteries.

The German Amish and Mennonite communities here in the US are by no means a monastery - people in these communities do not lead a monastic lifestyle; not even remotely close. They just do not allow the trappings of the modern world into theirs (well, for the most part anyway).

Yanno, Willie? I asked this question so MANY times? I could buy a "surf n turf" (not hamburger n fish sticks, either :p) dinner for everyone on this site!

Even went so far as to try and join some "secluded" agrarian church out in the boondocks? I'm tellin' ya, Willie? when God the Father, slammed that door shut? He made sure my hands and feet were in it! Yeah? I said OUCH!

Then preceded to tell me: "If I wanted you there?...You woulda been there!"...Yeah?...He talks to me in the manner of speech, I generally use when I talk to people. Yeah? I'm also 1 of Mr. sparkman's "nut jobs", that got "missed"! But not because they haven't been trying! But, because God ain't gonna let 'em!

sometimes, my editing and story telling skills won't ever see me being a famous like author. and sometimes get the cart in front of the horse....or the horse too far away from the cart...But, He also told me: "I WANT ya HERE!...RIGHT where you ARE!" And so many times, I wanted to quit my truck driving job, cuz of my boss! And he wouldn't let me! Just kept telling me: "I got BIG things ahead for you!" So?...I hung on, til I retired! Now, I got a union pension and social security, and since yesterday, I now have medi-care! And, I have this great site where I can relate my story, as well as my "journey", in getting to this point, without too much fear of getting bounced! So, call me crazy! I'll hop to attention, and say: "Why, thank you!" Reminds me of a Steely Dan tune..."Reelin' In The Years"..."The Things They Pass For Knowledge, I Can't Understand!"

As Forrest Gump might say?..."and that's all I have to say about protestant monasteries" :D

i agree Willie, its important to fellowship and worship with other believers, but you also have the example of Jesus, always going off alone around the corner, up a mountain to spend one on one time with the Father. and John alone out in the wilderness. maybe there is something to it.

i always thought COE was protestant in name only. but i never been in one, only read about them.
im not likely to join an order but i think a lot about walking away from the "civilized" world.
