Just wondering how I can know God personally instead of knowing about Him?

Job said, at the end of the book of Job: Before I had only heard about God but now, I have MET Him.

So maybe Job has some answers to that...

Your question reminds me of the man who said it is possible to know everything there is about how to make bread and yet still starve to death.

Well how do you get to know anyone personally? You spend time with them you talk with them and you do things with them. You can read about god and you can go to church and be taught about him but in the end unless you yourself take the time to get to know him personally then you won't truly know him. My advice is to spend as much time as you can with him however you can, seek to have a deep and intimate bond and relationship with him and talk with him constantly let him be your own personal diary ask him things about himself listen to Christian music and involve him in your everyday activities.

I got to know him by constantly speaking with him I could talk with him about anything it was so comforting knowing that I had someone who was always willing to listen to me about anything and that he understood me and so I didn't have to fear about being judged, I am a writer at heart so at first I wrote everything down in a journal but eventually I was able to just talk with him like he was my best friend. I can never not speak with him now and we talk about all kinds of things and in doing so I began to learn his voice and how to hear his response and he revealed to me things about him that no one could have taught me he showed me the deeper areas of his heart he showed me his nature his traits his ways of thinking and doing things and he showed me the kind of child I am in him.

What he and I have is a beautiful bond like that of a small child in the fathers caring arms, there is so much more to him than what you read about and hear about there are many things that only he can show you by you and him becoming intimately close. There is a reason my signature says When the hearts of God and a child of his make that special intimate connection a wondrous power is born and a flame ignites that can never be put out

What Blain said is right.

Think about how you get to know someone. You learn about them,
their likes and dislikes, you talk to them, spend time with them.
You invite them to spend time with you (you can do that with God!)

The other week in church I was feeling rather sad and even though the service
was uplifting and about what God has done for us, I couldn't shake off the sadness.
My aunt is in hosp and it's been a difficult month.

I was praying and saying "sorry God but I don't feel like counting my blessings today".
There was an empty seat on one side and during one hymn I felt that Jesus was
sat in that seat and He was saying "just hold hands with me".

I realise it sounds crazy! I dropped my hand to one side as if offering my hand out discreetly
and something happened, it was as if the sadness just lifted like something changed.

I can't explain it but something definately changed.

Jesus is real and present even if you can't see Him. :)

Prayer and loyal commitment.

Psalms 5:1-3, “Give ear to my words, O יהוה, Consider my meditation. Attend to the voice of my cry, My Sovereign and my Strength, For unto You I pray. O יהוה, in the morning You hear my voice; I present myself to You in the morning, And I look up.”

1 Chronicles 16:11, "Seek יהוה and His strength, Seek His face continually!”

John 9:31, "“And we know that Yah does not hear sinners. But if anyone fears Yah and does His desire, He hears him.”

John/Yahanan 14:23, "Yahshua answered, and said to him: If a man loves Me, he will keep My teachings and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him."

Bible says draw near to Him and He'll draw near to you.
You have to learn how He communicates, then learn to distinguish His " voice" from the others..
. What you invest, is what you'll get..

It's a beautiful thing..

It's not always about sense or feeling. The Spirit lives in you, so he's not far away.
A lot of times He is ignored. He's with us and how often is He included.. He gets quiet when He won't be heard anyway.
I don't say it as if you don't want to hear him. Look inward not outward. You should find it comes easier
I don't sense His presence though.

Isaiah 54:8-17 “In an overflow of wrath I hid My face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness I shall have compassion on you,” said יהוה, your Redeemer. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. For though the mountains be removed and the hills be shaken, My kindness is not removed from you, nor is My covenant of peace shaken,” said יהוה, who has compassion on you. O you afflicted one, tossed with storm, and not comforted, see, I am setting your stones in antimony, and shall lay your foundations with sapphires, and shall make your battlements of rubies, your gates of crystal, and all your walls of precious stones, and all your children taught by יהוה, and the peace of your children great. In righteousness you shall be established – far from oppression, for you shall not fear, and far from ruin, for it does not come near you. See, they shall indeed assemble, but not because of Me. Whoever shall assemble against you falls for your sake! See, I Myself have created the blacksmith who blows the coals in the fire, who brings forth an instrument for his work. And I have created the waster to destroy. No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every tongue which rises against you in judgment you shall prove wrong. This is the inheritance of the servants of יהוה, and their righteousness from Me,” declares יהוה.”

Have you ever done something spiritually wrong? For most of my life, when I did something spiritually wrong I wasn't aware of the punishment I was receiving. Now I am aware, and looking back I can see some of the punishments I received, because of the wrongs that I did, and was not aware at the time that the punishments were from God, not just the way things went in life.
The caring father will punish the wayward son or daughter and I am so glad that He has shown himself in this way to me. I love Him and know that He loves me. If punishment comes when I do good, I know that He is allowing Satan to test me and sorry to say I don't always pass the test, but I am passing more of them as time goes by.

It sounds like you have sensed His presence. He's always there watching us, but not always interacting with us other than enjoying watching us enjoy what He has created for us. When we are spared from injury, a mishandled knife or in my case a mishandled motorcycle and a ricocheting BB pellet just missing my eye, then we can also know that He is watching over us. May He bless you Mooky for caring enough to want Him around.

Some say that the most important thing about a person is what they think of when they think of God ....I have a very vague concept of God - even though I have been walking with Him for many years.

Anyway. Thanks for the suggestions. From the answers received I conclude that we accept His presence by faith, that it takes time to cultivate a relationship with Him and that we won't always sense Him with us but we know that we are being looked out for because we have provisions and are kept safe from danger.:)

I use to be a mess. Confused because I didn't know anything. I thought I never heard from Him. Thought He was far off because I didn't feel Him.
One day I realized that I had always heard Him, I just didn't know it was Him. I was like that for years.
I can in some way identify with where you are
