I read in a book years ago that this short, earthly life is just the warm up lap before the real thing (being eternal life.)
What are people's thoughts?

I think that's a pretty good way to look at it.

Well what we do on the earth determines where we will spend most of our eternity, but we are in eternity right now. Whether we are in a physical body or not, our soul is alive and will always continue to exist.

I believe this too. I'm sure that we will retain knowledge and wisdom we already have based on our life experience.

If that is true, then I'd rather there be no second life. If eternity gets more difficult than this, no thank you. That's not a gift. That's a curse.

On the other hand, I do think this life is God's way of having us ready for the next one. But it's more like turning a pig pen into a palace. Or a pig into a princess.

I beg to differ.Who we trustdetermines where we spend all of eternity. However. What we do with the stewardship we have been given on earth determines our role in heaven and our level of glory. If people care to elaborate on these thoughts, I am all ears!

Isaiah 40:6-8, “The voice said, “Cry out!” and he said, “What do I cry?” “All flesh is grass, and all its loving-commitment is like the flower of the field. Grass shall wither, the flower shall fade, when the Spirit of יהוה has blown on it! Truly the people is grass! Grass shall wither, the flower shall fade, but the Word of our Strength stands forever.”

1 John 2:17, “And the world passes away, and the lust of it, but the one doing the desire of Yah remains forever.”

Glad you are all ears to hear what God elaborates on this. Revelation 20:12 “And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.”

It's hard to say what this life—and even the whole world and all of humanity—is all about. Everybody just assumes that it's all about us. But maybe we (humans) were created for some benefit of another. For example, perhaps we were created as a lesson to, or as a conviction of, the fallen angels. (I'm just spittballing here. Purely non-bible based surmising.)

So I guess in the mean time we just have to live this life to the best of our ability. And if we do, we can ask The Creator what it's all about. :)

Indeed. This verse assumes that one of those "things" the that people have done is to put their faith in Christ and be justified by grace through faith. But this is a whole other issue for which there is a "not by works" thread. And I am all ears for new insights by people who do not purport to be speaking for God! ;)

To tell others what God says in the Bible is a Christian’s duty. We are His hands, feet, and mouth on this earth- we are His body (Col 1). Scripture doesn’t come from me, but through me to others.

(Song)
My hands are the Lord’s hands
without me how can His work be done?
I will do what He would do, with loving kindness in my touch,
I’ll be His healing hands to everyone.

My feet are the Lord’s feet
without me how can He walk with the poor
I will go where He would go, blessing others as I do,
for Him I’ll walk where I’ve never walked before

My mouth is the Lord’s mouth
without me how can His voice be heard?
I will say what He would say, speaking love and life each day,
and everyone who’s near will hear His words

Help me Lord, help me give to my neighbor
what You would give if You were here
Help me Lord, let me live so my neighbor
will always know that You are near

I think in the context of the book it was meant that things really begin on the other side of eternity. However, I am hesitant to mention the books name because I do not want to start a whole new debate, but the book I read it in was "The purpose driven life", by Rick Warren. I have since come to repudiate much of what he teaches but for some reason that one line stuck.

I have myself, oft times thought of these "flesh" bodies, as an "embryonic sack" of sorts.

John 6: Verily verily I say unto you
He who believeth in Me, hath eternal life.

So Jesus puts that in the present so that we know we have
it here and now. So that refers to the quality of life that we
have when we accept Jesus and follow Him every day. It
is not something illusive that we might find one day or something
we might earn one day, directly it means today. At the same
time it means we need to believe today, here and now. For
us, Christianity becomes a lifestyle everyday. This is not to
please God but it will, but it is so our lives can be lived in an
abundantly powerful joy. That is why Jesus came and that is
to conquer death. Previous to the risen Lord, we had nowhere
to go; just to live and then die. Now we have a life that makes
the promise of eternity. So what are we waiting for. Lord,
your will and not mine be done.
