How and why are Christians classed as Holy (set apart). Or are we?
(John 17:22-23): ...New American Standard Bible (NASB)

22 The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one;23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me.

"Ye shall be Holy; for I am Holy." (1 Peter 1:16).

Holiness means unsullied walking with the feet, unsullied walking with the tongue, unsullied thinking with the mind - every detail of the Life under the scrutiny of God. Holiness is not only what God gives me, but what I manifest that God has given me.

Thank you for your spirit filled and thoughtful answer. That does explain why the image of God you created in the likeness of man looks the ways he does.

I have always wondered why the image of God created by the Mainstream Church was created to look that way.

Thanks for the answer GP, now I know. :)
I'll be here all week. ;)

Hi, Phil.
Both "holy" and "set apart" are synonyms for "sanctified".
Those who have been water baptized have been "immersed" into Christ and into His death. (Rom 6:3)
Being crucified with Christ, His blood is awash over us as it was over Jesus. (Rom 6:6)
We are sanctified by His blood. (Heb 10:10, 29)

By our death, burial, and resurrection with Jesus, we have killed our "old" self and been raised with Christ to walk in newness of life.
That is when we are reborn. (Col 2:12)
The men who can now walk in the Spirit instead of the now dead flesh can maintain their sanctification by their subjection to God.
It is written..."And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts." (Gal 5:24)
No lust, no sin. (James 1:14-15)

I hope you are a Christian.

1Pe 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
1Pe 1:14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
1Pe 1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
1Pe 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

We are to be holy,as God is holy,so this is an action on our part, and God said He cannot be tempted with sin.

How can people think they can hold unto sin and be right with God,if we are to be holy as He is holy, and a definition of holiness is the man Christ Jesus, for He is called a holy child.

Holiness is an action of how we conduct ourselves.

Mat 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Mat 6:34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

1Co 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
1Co 15:34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.

1Jn 3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

We see righteousness is an action.

Jas 2:14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
Jas 2:15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
Jas 2:16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
Jas 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
Jas 2:24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

1Jn 3:17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
1Jn 3:18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

1Co 13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

Charity is an action.

1Co 13:4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
1Co 13:5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
1Co 13:6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
1Co 13:7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Gal 6:6 Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.
Gal 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
Gal 6:8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
Gal 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Charity, love in action, does not think an evil thought, and does not sin by the Spirit, and only goes by their needs, and not their wants, and helps the poor and needy, and is not selfish, and not arrogant, and is kind.

Luk 11:2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
Luk 11:3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
Luk 11:4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

God's will be done on eath,as it is in heaven, and the angels are not up there sinning, and the ones that were are no longer there.

Php 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Rom 11:20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:
Rom 11:21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee.
Rom 11:22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off.

Mar 7:20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
Mar 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
Mar 7:22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
Mar 7:23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

But some people act as if they are holy, and thoughts, and actions,do not matter, but it is our thoughts, and actions, that define who you are,and if they sin,or hold unto sin, then how are they clean.

Be ye holy,as God is holy, not say,I am holy without the thoughts, and actions, that are of being Christlike to accompany a person that causes them to be holy.

If people hold unto sin,and neglect the poor and needy, how are they holy.

So are you saying a person can sanctify themselves without the unction of the Holy One which shall be with them and shall be in them that are sanctified; If it had not been written because we know not the truth but because we know the truth and no lie is of truth then as it is written, I sanctify myself, that they might also be sanctified through the truth. [See John 17:19]

Could the explanation be the unction?

I quoted a verse of Scripture I did NOT try to formulate Doctrine.

The verse, which is from Leviticus, from the Law, does NOT reflect a NT perspective. The verse instructs people to prepare themselves for service to God and dedicate themselves to God's service. The NT clearly states that that can only happen by grace through faith.

I quoted a verse of Scripture I did NOT try to formulate Doctrine.

I really wasn't referring unto the scripture you quoted, but please excuse my ignorance when I ask how the following should be referenced as? Pontification?

therefore sanctify yourselves וְהִתְקַדִּשְׁתֶּ֙ם
וְ usually means and but here it is rendered as therefore
הִתְ means cause yourselves to (be)
קַדִּשְׁ means prepared for and dedicated to God's use.

תֶּ֙ם means you plural.
and ye shall be holyוִהְיִיתֶ֣ם קָדֹשִׁ֔יםmeans ye shall be prepared and set apart for God's use
Note that the dahlet
דֹ is pointed with a small dot called a holem; and the shin שִׁ֔ is pointed above with two vertical dots called a zaq qatan. and there is noוֺ֖ vahv . This means dedicated and consecrated .
for I am holy . קָדוֺֹ֖שׁ means absolutely flawless and sovereign.
note the
וֺ֖ is present and the zaq quatan is absent. this means flawless and sovereign.

They both come into English as holy with no explanation.

The verse, which is from Leviticus, from the Law, does NOT reflect a NT perspective.
That is doctrine! The verse from Leviticus is from the Word, the NT is from the Law. Rom 2:13
For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. Justified by faith?

The verse instructs people to prepare themselves for service to God and dedicate themselves to God's service.
They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. John 16:2

In the movie it is through faith by grace, but don't quote me on that because I haven't seen the movie yet
