"Fasting" is a lot like "slowing", only it's faster.

And you're hungrier.

A very good question to ask, fasting is sort of an emphasis to God that when you pray that you mean what you pray because you are willing to temporarily not drink or eat for a time seeking God to answer a prayer that is that important to you!

its when you deny your flesh of food

it can help in overcoming sins in your life when you fast and stay in prayer

it can clean your system too

i would say it can be very important

but at your age im not sure if it is a good idea to fast for too long unless God wanted you to

oh yes, NMM,

we always should be led by our Saviour to FAST, for it will only 'work',
if it is for Him and for His loving benefit for US...

Fasting always needs to be a strong call by the Lord to do so. Only He knows if it is what you need and you will usually be given a purpose to the fast.

Some are called to fast in order to intercede for others, some to spend more of a listening time with the Lord, some to study and I suppose some might be called to fast to exercise the fruit of self-discipline.

But it is directed by the Lord. Only He knows if your body is able to do this and for how long. Some are called to a minimal fast (some food allowed), some to a full fast, and the time varies for each person.

I was in a church once where the pastor called for a fast from everyone. I went along with it, and actually felt distracted in the fast from enjoying the Lord's presence. It did not feel right to me. Later, I learned that it needs to be "God directed". It probably would have been better for the pastor to ask for those who felt directed to do so. But it was presented in a mandatory way.

Mar 9:29 And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

Fasting is one of those doctrines that come with many ideas, for instance some say a person is closer spiritually by not having food making them more spiritually alert to do the will in a hope of being heard on high..

Its one of those doctrines a person keeps on the back burner on simmer open to new ingredients as suggestions .

I would offer fasting is a way that God has set up in a hope of humbling oneself in a living hope to be heard on high, or heard of God ,confirming they are do the will of God. .

It has to do with not eating our necessary foods but focuses more on spiritual food like that which the disciples knew not of, doing the will of the father. Job I believe gives us a hint.

Job 23:12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

It is likened to manna

John 6:31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.
The food to represent that which the disciples knew not of was manna referred to as the hidden manna.

The word manna meaning... what is it? I think It could be a way of tasting and seeing the Lord, not seen ,is good. It tasted like honey another word to represent the gospel , the good news

Strongs lexicon ..3131 manna {man'-nah}of Hebrew origin 04478; TDNT - 4:462,563; n n
AV - manna 5; 5 manna = "what is it" 1) the food that nourished the Israelites for forty years in the wilderness 2) of the manna was kept in the ark of the covenant 3) symbolically, that which is kept in the heavenly temple for the food of angels and the blessed

The fast was designed to be used along with the ceremonial Sabbath. On the day before the Sabbath twice is much was to baked and eaten and what was left, eaten the next day . Showing us it’s not a lack of food that can bring us closer to God. But more of a focus of Job 23:12 a way of esteeming the words of His mouth, we are to esteem as higher. I think representing the gospel.

The Sabbath is a day that person could not work to bake the manna.

And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning. And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein. And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD: to day ye shall not find it in the field. Exo 16:25

The person stoned on a Sabbath for gathering fire wood apparently waited till the next day.

Because it was a day that person did not have to work to eat. They could work to do the will of God and bring the gospel into the word as a way of being heard on high .

The disciples could not cast out the lying spirits. Jesus said to them (Mar 9:29) This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting. Showing us the true fast by which men can be heard on high.

Therefore esteeming the words of His mouth more that our necessary food again the kind of food the disciples knew not of . Which is do the will of the father offering the gospel , praying God would apply it to their heart.

John 4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat(food) is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

Chapter 58 of Isaiah shows us that kind of true fast in that parable.

Its beginning showing what a fast is not...

Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours. Isa 58:1-3

The whole chapter must be read to get the context.

What the fast is and does...

Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Isa 58:6

Looking at the metaphors in that parable they all point to certain aspects of the gospel.

The gospel ( key) loosens the bands of wickedness, freeing the person of the heavy burdens of sin , and to lets the oppressed go free, breaking every yoke, as those yoked with Christ. Brining the hidden manna the bread to the hungry, bringing in them who are spiritually bankrupt into the house of God .Praying that Christ with cloth them with his righteousness, and keeping in mind not to hide the gospel from our own self remembering we to where not clothed with the righteousness of Christ. Humbling us, so that we can be heard on high.

This does not mean the literal does not apply it can provide a opportunity .Both working together

Basically, fasting is choosing to go without food, partially or completely, for some specific period of time, for a specific purpose. In the case of Christian fasting, the purpose is to focus on Jesus. There are other ways you can fast (from social media, for example) though in the Bible, fasting always means from food.

Andy, I would encourage you to locate a book by Richard Foster called Celebration of Discipline. The chapter on fasting is probably the most thorough Christian work on the subject. It is a bit heavy in tone, but worth it for gaining understanding and wisdom from Foster's personal experience.

There are different kinds of fasts, food, water, humbling, etc.

BUt the main and most important part of a fast is a sincere and humble heart before YHWH.

Isaiah 58:1-11, “Cry aloud, do not spare. Lift up your voice like the shophar. Declare to My people their transgression, and the house of Ya‛aqoḇ their sins. Yet they seek Me day by day, and delight to know My ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and did not forsake the right-ruling of their Strength. They ask of Me rulings of righteousness, they delight in drawing near to the Mighty One. They say, ‘Why have we fasted, and You have not seen? Why have we afflicted our beings, and You took no note?’ “Look, in the day of your fasting you find pleasure, and drive on all your labourers. Look, you fast for strife and contention, and to strike with the fist of wrongness. You do not fast as you do this day, to make your voice heard on high. Is it a fast that I have chosen, a day for a man to afflict his being? Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush, and to spread out sackcloth and ashes? Do you call this a fast, and an acceptable day to יהוה?, Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loosen the tight cords of wrongness, to undo the bands of the yoke, to exempt the oppressed, and to break off every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; when you see the naked, and cover him, and not hide yourself from your own flesh? Then your light would break forth like the morning, your healing spring forth speedily. And your righteousness shall go before you, the esteem of יהוה would be your rear guard." Then, when you call, יהוה would answer; when you cry, He would say, ‘Here I am.’ “If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and the speaking of unrighteousness, if you extend your being to the hungry and satisfy the afflicted being, then your light shall dawn in the darkness, and your darkness be as noon. Then יהוה would guide you continually, and satisfy your being in drought, and strengthen your bones. And you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.”

Some people say they go a ‘juice fast’- I’m sorry, but that is not fasting- that’s dieting. Fasting is absolutely no food, no calories, only fresh water. This is why they call the first meal of the day break-fast- cause you are taking a break from fasting all night while you slept. Man can live on water for a long time, but man cannot live on just air.

So what’s the difference between a few calories and no calories? It takes your body a lot of energy to break down food- even fruit juice. When that energy is not being used for your digestive system (after three days) your body starts to use that energy for other things- like healing and brain power.

The healing is not just little stuff like cuts and acne, but like cancer and depression. The brain power is not just better memory, focus, and mood, everything becomes so clear. Talk about the ability to have a great prayer life! When Peter had the vision of unclean things that God had made clean, the Bible mentions that he was hungry at the time- which made it easier to spiritually see.

The longest I’ve ever gone is only twelve days- which was too much for me personally. Seven to ten days is great according to my personal health. Because fasting weakens muscle- and your heart is a muscle- and going twelve or more days effects my heart. You should always fast under a doctor’s care, and wait for at least the same amount of time before you fast again (if you fast for five days, you must eat for five days before you fast again). The following people must never fast: anyone still growing taller, pregnant or nursing mothers, the elderly, and those who are not cleared to do so by their doctor.

Ever wish that vegetables tasted as good as junk food? They can! After a long fast, natural foods taste amazing to me, and I cannot stomach junk, it’s repulsive. Even the Bible says to the hungry what is sour tastes sweet. After fasting, I could not stand th smell of cigarettes or alcohol. Your body rejects them, it’s a good way to rid yourself of bad habits. But if you don’t keep it up, your body will start to adjust to it again.

When you come off of a fast, you need to ease your body back into food. Don’t shock your system by a sudden steak dinner. Boil half water and half orange juice without pulp, and sip on it for and hour. Then you can upgrade to some tomato soup or applesauce. A couple hours after that go ahead with your new healthy foods. Keep in mind the portion should be no bigger than your fist- as your stomach has shrunk, and eating too much too soon will hurt, and come back up cause there’s not enough room.

After three days of fasting, your hunger pangs go away, as your body stops trying to get food from your stomach, and turns to your stored fat. Then you are no longer hungry, but in a great mood, with much energy. This stage can go on for some time. But hunger does return. When your tongue starts being dry or sticking to the roof of your mouth, you need to start coming down off your fast.

How much weight can you lose on a fast? It depends, the more weight you start with, the faster you lose it. For me it was about a pound a day- every morning, after using the restroom, I got on the scale and weighed one pound less than the day before. But I found that I actually lose weight faster by eating my magic number of calories.

What is that? I ate normal for a day, and tracked my calories. Then I ate 100 less calories everyday, until a morning on the scale showed one pound less. That is how I found my personal magic number to where I lose weight. And for me, that number is 500 calories a day. About 100 for breakfast, 100 for lunch, and 300 for dinner. Much faster than fasting- 10 or 12 pounds a week.

Make sure you drink plain water, don’t skip out on calculium (milk), potassium (banana or potato), natural greens such as fresh spinach, and essential oils such as avocado or fish. Babies live their first half year on just milk. Adults also need meat, but don’t under estimate the importance of milk. But don’t get fat on it either- a little goes a long way.

I would agree the kind of fast that can drive out lying spirits as the spiritual matter.is found in Isaiah 58 it speaks directly to the matter

It informs us it is not a day for a man to afflict ones soul bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him as a work we could do to draw us closer to him as if any man could be found with a righteousness of their ownself..It is not a way we can make our voice heard on high . (The prayer part of fasting and prayer.)

It not about what can we do, but how can he use our feet to bring the gospel . The spiritul meaning is explained in the parable below using the guide found in 2Corinthians 4:18 .the spiritul meaning hid from the lost.

2Corinthians 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

We must continue to walk by faith the unseen. The kingdom of God is not of this world never was never will be.

Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward. Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day:

And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.Isa 58

All of those words represent the work of the gospel

1) deal thy bread to the hungry, Those who hunger and thirst for a righteousness not of themselves

2) and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house .Theses are the bankrupt in spirit not from the house of God the church.

3) when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; . The covering relates to the righteous of Christ

4)and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh. Remembering how the gospel brought us salvation humbling one self.

5) Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee. Speaking of the light of the gospel the lamp unto our path the light unto our feet, with feet representing the gospel

6)the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward. we are used as a representative glory hidden from men

7) If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity. this humbles us seeing we are yoked with Christ and not to judge one another.

8) And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day: again drawing out our soul to those who hunger and thirst for a righteousness not of their own selves. related to the gospel

9)And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail. Again speaking of the water of the gospel the living word of God .

It is the kind of fast that can cast our lying spirits called demons.

It does not take away from we should look at those passages literally . But by performing those works and not looking at the spiritual application there would be no casting out of lying spirits. You would simply have the gospel of the Catholics fast, pleasing to their own selves as a hope of being heard on high..

I would think Isiah 58 complements Mathew 5 when we compare the spiritual understanding to the same spiritual (faith to faith )l

Mat 5:1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him:
Mat 5:2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,
Mat 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Mat 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
Mat 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.
Mat 5:7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Mat 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.
Mat 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Mat 5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Mat 5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

General rules of 3's

The following is based upon a generalization and is dependent upon several factors, but over ALL.......the AVERAGE PERSON CAN SURVIVE...

a. Three minutes without air
b. Three hours without shelter and no protection (like in the cold, extreme heat etc.)
c. Three days without water
d. Three weeks without food

once you read all the comments here then you are going to have to look at Mat 17:21 and ask your self what does fasting have to do with the idea of casting out demonic spirits in people ?

Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

It’s like that movie where an invisable guy is only seen in a mirror. Who we are spiritually is only reflected by our physical deeds. The longer we stay away from sin, and sacrifice to God (like giving up eating), the more spiritually clean we are. (Please, I’m not talking about Christ’s blood saving us from every sin, or the possibility of never sinning and not needing Christ’s blood- at this time), the cleaner we are at that moment, and the better we can function spiritually. Evil cannot drive out evil. If you just did a bunch of sinning and eating, or lack faith, you are not going to be able to rinse away dirt with dirty water so-to-speak.

Paraphrased it would read ...Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by the gospel, as it is written
