Is this just the latest fad among certain groups of people to use the name "Yeshua" instead of "Jesus?" I never use to to see "Yeshua" being commonly used anywhere on the internet until the last few years. I am not very familiar with the name "Yeshua."
Well, In the 5700+ Greek manuscripts we have available of the New Testament the Greek name to which "Jesus" is attributed is "IESOUS"
"IESOUS" is transliterated into the 1611 King James Authorized Version of the Bible as "Iesus"
"Iesus" was later changed in the 1769 Blayney Revision of the 1611 into "Jesus"
A transliteration is NOT the same as a translation.
The direct translation of the Greek "IESOUS" into Hebrew is "Yehoshua" and the Aramaic "Yeshua"
And the direct English translation is "Joshua"
So, "IESOUS" = "Yeshoshua" = "Yeshua" = "Joshua".
The name "Jesus" is younger than 400 years old and is the direct result of poor scholarship.
Now, does this mean that those who came to know the Messiah and His sacrifice are lost for using the name "Jesus", ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!! The name "Jesus" is a man-made title attributed to the Hebrew Messiah. And it's creation is not at all one of malice or ill-intent. Neither is it's purpose maleficent in nature. For certain the name "Jesus" is an acceptable word to reference the Messiah of Israel. One is not more or less "Saved" for using the name "Jesus" or "Yeshua". I will chalk this up to personal preference and personal conviction. It is not an issue of one being a "Judaizer".
