I'm am doing a soul detox plan on the Bible app. And today it was Proverbs 15:1-33 well verse 11 has me completely confused. I feel like I'm staring at exactly what it means, but because God's understanding goes way above and beyond my own I'm lost.

Proverbs 15:11 Death and Destruction lie open to the Lord-how much more do human hearts. NIV

Any thoughts, comments, or interpretations would be greatly appreciated.

PROVERBS 15:11 NKJV
Hell and Destruction are before the LORD; So how much more the hearts of the sons of men.

I would say the NKJV translation would be a lot easier for myself to try to interpret.
What do you reckon?

Proverbs 15:16 just means God both sees and understands all things.

Proverbs uses a lot of parallelism to compare and contrast things.
Here it's comparing "death and destruction" to "human hearts".

If God can basically "see through" all the complexities and chaos of death and destruction... he can see what's right in your own little heart.

There are others verses that talk about God knowing the hearts of men.
That's all it's really saying.

Thats what I thought it meant. Because everything we do flows from the heart.

Honestly, none of the different versions help. But I really just translate it as everything we do flows from the heart, and God can see what's in our hearts and we will be dealt with accordingly.

Mmm... I think that's more or less the deal.

Just remember that Proverbs is generally using some form of parallelism to compare and contrast things.
So if you get stuck on something, just take a really good look at how the key elements are being compared.

And commentaries don't hurt anything.

Okay so it might sound weird but this verse is comforting to me. It says to me that He knows everything in my heart so its ridiculous to try to hide it or convince myself I had pure motives in something when I really didn't. It gives me the freedom to admit the truth, instead of the useless way I inherited from my parents, which is to always defend myself and try to make myself feel or look better than I am.

I don't know, it just spurs me on to walking in the truth instead of deceits..

No not at all, I totes get that. I admit everything to God all the time good or impure because I know he can see everything I'm feeling and thinking anyway. So there really is no way to hide it. It's kind of like needing help but not asking for it, he can clearly see you need help he's just waiting for you to ask. So I completely get it.

When Jesus rose from the dead He said, "I have the keys of death and hell," that's fitting for part of the interpretation keeping in mind that God is not bound in time except when He was on the earth for a short time. "There is a way that seams right to man but the end thereof is death." God sees the end from the beginning and see's where we are going the wrong way. A loving creator moved with compassion to take the blame for His creation, had to make the Way of escape in Himself. "

This is correct. You might want to try the NLT verison.

Proverbs 15:11-NLT

Even Death and Destruction hold no secrets from the Lord.
How much more does he know the human heart!

Hah! From the beginning NLT was my favorite. I just understood it better somehow. I have been reading NASB for at least a year though because my NLT fell apart, but I see now that you print it that it helped inform my understanding on a lot of verses! I will break down and buy another large print NLT. I just miss it.:)

The NLT is fine translation as is the NASB.

The best version/translation is the one people keep reading.

Great advice and parallelism is very true about Proverbs. Proverbs 15 is contrasting the wicked to the upright/righteous

Mind officially blown! Never thought of it like that.
It's good to think outside the box:
To get past what we think we know, and you will get more light with the joy you express to move forward. There is still danger to think we know and stop learning. There is so much hidden meaning in the bible, not everyone seeks wisdom, and neither are we consistent, but whatever we seek we will find. We may not be able to share some of the mystery because we all know in part and see dimly in this life, but believe this: the dim sight of God we have is enough and as we walk in the light we have we get more light, but if we don't walk in the light we have we are a casualty to ourselves and others.

I will keep that in mind. One thing I know for sure is God loves those who pursue righteousness, so as long as I'm always doing that then more wisdom and understanding shall come my way. Thanks though for making me thinking about it a different way!

Pray this prayer each time you open the Bible:

Eph 1:17-23

[h=3]Paul’s Prayer for Spiritual Wisdom[/h][SUP]17 [/SUP]asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God. [SUP]18 [/SUP]I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.

[SUP]19 [/SUP]I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power [SUP]20 [/SUP]that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. [SUP]21 [/SUP]Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come. [SUP]22 [/SUP]God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made him head over all things for the benefit of the church. [SUP]23 [/SUP]And the church is his body; it is made full and complete by Christ, who fills all things everywhere with himself.

Pray it personalized like this:

[SUP]17 [/SUP]asking God, the glorious Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, to give ME spiritual wisdom and insight so that I might grow in my knowledge of God. [SUP]18[/SUP]I pray that my hearts will be flooded with light so that I can understand the confident hope he has given to those he called—his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance.
