In this thread you can ask any questions about the bible or something you read in the bible that you don't understand. Of course you can answer other people's questions as well. Let me get this started by asking a question about Philemon 1

In verse 11 it says that Onesimus (Paul's child) was formerly useless but now is useful to them. Why is this so?

PhilemonKing James Version (KJV)

1 Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer,

2 And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the church in thy house:

3 Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

4 I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,

5 Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;

6 That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

7 For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.

8 Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient,

9 Yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.

10 I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:

11 Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:

12 Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels:

13 Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:

14 But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.

15 For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;

16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

17 If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.

18 If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;

19 I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.

20 Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.

21 Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.

22 But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.

23 There salute thee Epaphras, my fellowprisoner in Christ Jesus;

24 Marcus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lucas, my fellowlabourers.

25 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

umm no. it's warzone, the field of blood, the I am right and how dare you disagree with me palace and I got lots more lol
You see a question starts from a willingness to learn and leads to an answer, the question why has always lead to the greatest of discoveries and the most brilliant people in history. Now let me ask you what causes war and what makes war never cease?
Which of these best fit the bdf?

Yes it is, but I don't want to make a new thread every time I have a question or don't understand something.

Hi Devin...... First of all, Onesimus was not Paul's Child....Look to v.15... Second, Onesimus name meant "unprofitable".....Paul was playing with his name in a way but in reality if one looks to v.15 where we find that Onesimus was a runaway (unprofitable) met Paul and became converted (profitable).

the name 'Onesimus' means "useful"

Paul got jokes ;)

and the man, a slave who ran away and ran into Paul later, became a disciple of Christ, which is also what Paul means when he calls him 'son' while he's sending him back to his former master, Philemon, who happened to be another one of Paul's 'sons' in the gospel

For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Did you mean verse 16? "no longer as a slave but more than a slave—a beloved brother, especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord."

You use SLAVE.. why?????

NO,,,,v.15....."For this perhaps is why he was parted from you for a while, that you might have him back forever, KJV

v.15 ESV..."For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;"

He was a runaway and Paul is sending him Back.

Where have you find that "onesimus" means "unprofitable"?

According to wiki it means the opposite:

"Saint Onesimus (Greek: Ὀνήσιμος Onēsimos, meaning "useful"; died c. 68 AD..."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onesimus

But it would be interesting if you are right.

Yes it is, but I don't want to make a new thread every time I have a question or don't understand something.
Just start a thread with "DeEvin02's Bible Questions". Then keep posting your questions there as "Q #1, Q #2, etc.:)

Well as long as a person is not saved, he is useless when it comes to spiritual things or serving God and Christ. So Onesiumus was once lost, but is now a faithful brother in Christ.

Thank you Trofimus for your quick eye....The un-profitable was a play on his name which means profitable.

Strongs G3682 = Onesimus = "profitable or useful"

My Bad, I added the 'un'

Thank you for catching it.

Question: Was (is?) Melchizedek the human embodiment of the Holy Spirit?

I ask this because I was listening to a live streaming bible radio program the other day and that's what the minister said.

I have a question about 2 John 1:10: It says that if anyone if anyone does not follow God and his teachings that you shouldn't "receive him into your house or give him any greeting" that doesn't line up with what Jesus teaches at all though. What exactly does this mean then?

it does line up

remember before when i told you to make a distinction between having fellowship with an enemy

and loving an enemy?

you dont bring a murderer and fornicator into your home with your daughter right there
(but this verse is specifically speaking of those false teachers who would try to decieve you)
and treat him as a friend

but if this same man asks you for some food

you give him food

in Jesus name

plant some seeds of truth too

hoping he comes to Jesus
