VCO.........your input is valuable everywhere you post.
All of my sharing has been that we can do nothing to save ourselves, salvation is a free gift after we come to Jesus repented of this world.
Because of the gift of faith, we, in love, joy and simple gratitude will act on that joyous gift. The major part of acting on it is imitating Jesus Christ, hearing Him and doing as He teaches which includes the law according to the Gospel of Jesus..no according to the Pharisees and other hypocrites.
Jesus has invited all who believe to come to Him to learn and our burden will be far less than that of the hypocrites. The two great laws of love do indeed fulfill all the law,; so, no, go back to the laws of MOses.
Note all of the laws that are made nought by the coming of Jesus Christ, when you are finished you will find very few of the laws remaining, and those that do remain are certainly acts of love, never of duty, though love is our due after receiving Salvation.
What is not loving about honoring our parents, doing unto others etc, turning the other hceek, praying for our enemies, leaving a neighbor's land mark in place and not moving it to favor oneself, and so many more that are natural for all who love?
Do not be fooled by hyper-grace, we are definitely under grace when we love Jesus, but when we love Jesus we do act on His teachying, never on the teaching changed by flesh.
We all know that Jesus summed up the 10 commandments in two.
Matthew 22:37-40
37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
Here the word for love is agapaō - of persons to welcome, to entertain, to be fond of, to love dearly
Jesus also said
John 13:34-35
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
What I find intersting is that the word love used in v34 is the same as above agapaō.
Yet the word love in v35 is agapē - brotherly love, affection, good will, love, benevolence
Its obvious love is the focus here yet it seems that 2 words for love are used that seem to have a difference.
Is there a difference?
I am glad you mentioned enemies.
I think sometimes it’s easy to miss this and not realise that we are required to love our enemies.
Jesus has told us to do it
Matthew 5:43-48
Love Your Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet your brethren only, what do you do more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do so? 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
The word for love here is the same as used Matthew above and v34
agapaō - of persons to welcome, to entertain, to be fond of, to love dearly.
It seems to me that Jesus is raising the bar here.
Do not just stop at loving each other who love you, or your neighbour.
Love those who are your enemies, just like God does. He loves his enemies now aspire to that love.
Then we will be perfect as he is (side note to me that’s growing into maturity and not sinless perfection)
Sorry for my long post everyone but if you don’t mind can I finish with the following.
Firstly if we cannot love ourselves then it’s going to be very difficult to love love each other and our enemies.
If we cannot love each other and the world sees we don’t then they will question what we are all about.
If we backbite each other and don’t love each other why would those who do not believe want any part of it?
There may be people who desperately seek true love, if they don’t see it in us who should be the source of the hope of love that accepts the person where they are why would they seek it?
In a sense to me the church is guilty of accepting a person seeking Jesus with love then when they come to Jesus this Love is replaced with “don’t do this don’t do that” then all of sudden acceptance of where they are it is replaced with you should be here.
Not walking alongside like Jesus did to bring healing and freedom for the things that bind them.
Finally and I promise my post is almost over.
If we truly want to be set free ourselves, to love ourselves which will help us love others then we need to know that God loves us as much as he loves Jesus.
Jesus said it himself
John 17:23
23 I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.
agapaō - of persons to welcome, to entertain, to be fond of,
to love dearly.
When we get it, others will see because we walk in it.
Just my simple thoughts on Christ’s teachings.
