I saw the quote below in another thread--the suicide thread. Coincidentally, just this morning I heard a radio program that dealt with this topic. I have my own opinions on the issue, but wanted to hear the beliefs of other CC members. Here's the quote:

So ask yourself, “Do I want to set myself on fire, not just to die, but to go to hell where I will be tortured with painful fire for the rest of eternity, never being able to die to escape it?” Cause that’s what you’re trying to do right? Die to escape pain? Murdering yourself is not going to be an escape from pain- just the opposite, and will never end. You don’t want to do this.

I believe that people that go to hell suffer a second death and cease to exist in the eyes of God. They are certainly not going to be tortured in hell burning for all eternity. Only a cruel god would do such a thing but God is Love and has a more merciful solution.

Jesus taught it.

Mr 9:48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Re 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Not wise to bet against it.

This is why men do not have a proper fear of eternal condemnation. If we enjoy eternal bliss the ungodly will suffer eternal condemnation. They need not but they will not forsake their sin so their sin will cause them to suffer.

Think again Tourist in Revelation it is clear that the antichrist and false Profit are still in the lake of fire 1000 yeas after they were put there. and if you read about the Rich man and Lazarus, you will find that those in HELL are also in torment. You see, HELL is simply a holding tank for sinners until the White Throne Judgement. Those whose names are not in the Book(s), they are taken from hell and cast in the Lake of Fire. Both are Hot and torturous.

Hope this answers your question or was it a statement?

God loves those that follow Him and keep his commandments, not those that chose turn their heart away from Him and engage in lawlessness. Those that continue to trespass against God, the ones with a seared conscience and the double-minded will reap what they sow. Their souls will be damned to hell for all of eternity, and they will suffer truly because of their actions.

Yes one does have to wonder about eternal punishment for temporal crimes.

But then there seems to be an inherent desire within us to punish others even though we have escaped punishment.

I believe that people that go to hell suffer a second death and cease to exist in the eyes of God. They are certainly not going to be tortured in hell burning for all eternity. Only a cruel god would do such a thing but God is Love and has a more merciful solution.

"Not sure."

I am quite certain that it will not be physical pain and physical fire. Bodies will be different.

I am not sure whether it will last without end or whether it will end by total destruction (after some time).

These are two separate places.
Death and hell are cast into the lake of fire. They may be separate for now but they will be one in Gods time. I fail to see how that is any relief to those who are therein.

Majority deny the historical doctrine of hell?

I find it amazing how heaven is always literal, always eternal and everyone is going. But hell is never literal, never eternal and no one is going.
Is this a case of itching ears? Where I come from you are not a preacher of the word if you do not preach on hell.

Matthew 25:46 makes it quite clear. Equal timelength. Just like in Daniel 12:2

If the punishment in Matthew 25:46 is not eternal, neither is the life part.

Psalm 37:38 But transgressors will be all together destroyed; The posterity of the wicked will be cut off.

You shall trample the wicked, For they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet On the day that I do this, Says the LORD of hosts. Malachi 4:1-3.

The LORD preserves all who love Hims, But all the wicked He will destroy. Psalm 145:20.

You shall make them as a fiery oven in the time of Your anger; The LORD shall swallow them up in His wrath, And the fire shall devour them. Psalm 21:9.

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 2 Peter 3:10.

  1. Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.
  2. All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more. Ezekiel 28:18-19.

It needs to be thought through the general context.

Our life is eternal because we are born of God (and God is eternal). So we actually have a basis for living without end.
Not so with unbelievers.

Comparing one verse only can mislead us.

Romans 6:23 says the wages of sin is death not eternal hell fire Jesus paid for our sin if the penalty was hell for eternity then wouldnt Jesus be in hell and John 3:16 says you get EVERLASTING life through Christ and if you dont believe then you perish the word perish to me doesn't make me think eternal torture revelations 20:12 says we will be punished according to our works not to mention revelations 20:14 says death and hell were cast into the lake of fire this is the second death which means they cease to exist their spirits are dead and if you look at 1 John 5:11-13 this means you have ETERNAL life through JESUS ONLY if you dont have Jesus you don't have ETERNAL life

Ha ha! Come on people. 16 posts and this issue is as clear as mud to me. :)

I've always been in the "No" camp, believing as Tourist describes above in post #2 that we die a second death and cease to exist. But then I read Bogadile's post #11 that points to "Yes" being the correct answer. And I have a hard time refuting it. Especially considering the wording of Matthew 25:46.

But then I read JesusLives comment in post #12 and I again think "No" really is the answer.

I think I'm more confused and uncertain about this that I was when I got up this morning! Clearly I need help.

Smart guy that Bogadile, and humble too! (Just joking! ;) )

They say I am a hillbilly that doesn't know what he is talking about, they are only half right, I'm a hillbilly that DOES know what he is talking about.

Another thing to consider is Luke 16:19-31 the famous Rich man and Lazarus story.

In the book of revelation where this lake of fire is mentioned. Take a look at this:

When Jesus returns in Revelation 19, the beast and the false prophet are cast into the lake of fire:

Rev 19:20
And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

In Revelation 20 the devil is bound for a thousand years, after this period is over he is loosened for a little season, then thrown into the lake of fire where the beast and the false prophet still ARE (not were).

Rev 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Atleast a thousand years has passed and it is still ongoing.

The first death as that which we are born with or into is the death of a soul. This means no communion as a living abiding hope with the God of creation. As a soul lost in the garden when mankind did the will of Satan, the father of lies whose murdering spree began from the beginning, brining death into this world. . God corrupted that creation and its temporal spirit died as death entered into the world.

We do not look to things seen, the temporal to give us the unseen spiritual understanding of walking by faith. Man as a new creation is given a new spirit and therefore a new heart that will never die by which they could love Him not seen in a new relationship, of a new soul .it will be raised on the last day

Natural man born dead in his trespasses and sin without out god in this world has been given 70 or 80 years before his spirit and therefore heart dies .. Having no new spirit life he will not rise of the last day

Psalms 90:10 The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

Hell is the description of a living suffering. It is shown by the sign as a as wonder using Jonas to represent the Spirit of Christ doing the work suffering pouring out his Spirit life in jeopardy of His own Spirit .God who is not a man as us cannot die.

Can't hear the voice of dead people.

Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. Jon 2:1

He is a God of Mercy and therefore grace, surely he would not send some to suffer without end to some and give mercy to another. That would make him a cruel God

Well I dont believe hell is eternal cause our father is just and loving there will be punishment but it won't be eternal and you know every atheist I've met is turned off of God and religion because of the thought of hell being eternal they think God is evil because he's going to punish people by burning them for all of eternity it doesn't even make since that God loving us as much as he does would punish us to that extent
