wiktionary has the English "first come, first served" down for "Wer zuerst kommt, mahlt zuerst" -- but wouldn't that really be a contrast? if i come to a table already prepared and get to choose what to eat alone, that's positive for me - but if i go to a kitchen first and start all the work of preparation alone, it's a negative - more work!

goes to show how trying to understand an idiom by looking up the definition in a book or something may not really give you the answer you're looking for heh

It's a German saying about getting to the mill early enough to get your meal (grain) ground. In American, "Ya snooze, ya lose."

Close. Its not so much about pride, but about being well.

Something like "when somebody gets too well, he is doing stupid (dangerous) things".

seems to me like "the lights are on but nobody's home" but we're talking about the whole neighborhood, not just one house - with a touch of "wouldn't know a snake if it bit ya" thrown in 'for good measure' . . ?
