I am so interested and curious now. Don't stop sharing these findings!
I plan on sharing anything that God shows me here on this thread. I am thinking about starting a new thread about the Bible and Pi since I am finding so much information in short amount of time. Soon I am going to post what I know about 1 Kings 7:23-24. I was elated when I seen the pattern. Why 300 "knops"?

PI in the Bible

In 1 Kings 7:23 we read,

He [Solomon] made the Sea of cast metal, circular in shape, measuring ten cubits from rim to rim [diameter = 10] and five cubits high. It took a line of thirty cubits to measure around it. [circumference = 30]Since circumference = PI x diameter as any elementary geometry book will tell you, therefore the Bible "seemingly" tells us that PI = 3. Since "this is obviously false, therefore the Bible cannot be from God..." is how some people like to reason.

But obviously the wisdom of God is greater than the wisdom of man:
In this verse the word for "circumference" (QaVa in Hebrew) is written with an extra letter (qavah).
Since in Hebrew all letters are also numbers, we can take the ratio of (the gematriacal value of) the unusual word form (qof, vaf, he ) to the regular word form (qof, vaf). Given that Qof = 100, Vaf = 6 and He = 5 we find that
( 111 / 106 ) = ( 3.14150943... / 3 )
The real value: PI = 3.1415926...
The difference between 3 x 111/106 and PI is 0.0000832 which is only an error of 0.00026%.
It is interesting to compare the "Solomonic" approximation of PI with the approximations used by the Babylonians and Egyptians.

PI = 3.1415926... ErrorBabylon : 3 1/8 = 25/8 = 3.125 0.0165926Egypt : 3 13/81 = 256/81 = 3.16049382... 0.0189012"Solomon": 333/106 = 3.14150943... 0.0000832Since the ancient Egyptian or Babylonian approximations are much older than the time of Solomon it might be interesting find out what the usually used approximation of PI was at that time (Solomon was King around 1000 B.C.) in this or other parts of the world. Any helpful information on this question would be very much appreciated.
The "sound exegesis" answer: The Bible is not a scientific text book (though sometimes it makes scientific statements) and this specific passage wasn't intended to reveal the value of PI but to give a description of what the temple and its "furnishing" objects looked like. But given that the value "3" is within less than 5% error compared to the real value of PI = 3.14159... this is an acceptable approximation, even though "31 cubits" length would have been the (correctly rounded) answer that we might have expected. But who knows what "rounding" entailed in these days. And in a certain sense "30" is a "rounder" number than "31". And these last remarks are made all under the assumption that this above mentioned astonishing approximation is NOT intended.
Taking into account further information a few verses later, provides us with yet another way of understanding the text. In 1 Kings 7:26 we read about this metal pool:

  • It was a handbreadth in thickness, and its rim was like the rim of a cup,
like a lily blossom. It held two thousand baths.
We can imagine this to look somewhat like the following sketch:

`\ /' d = the measured diameter between | | the extreme points of the rim | | | | but circumference is measured below | | the rim at the actually smaller | | diameter c \_________________________/ >--------------d----------------< |/' <-----------c------------->Given this information and assuming that exact numbers are given in Biblical text we could even calculate the width of the rim, if we want to... [that is a home work problem for the interested reader].

The above is a mainly a summary of ideas found in a paper by Shlomo Edward G.Belaga which is available in LaTeX format or Postscript format in Boaz Tsaban's Rabbinical Math section.
The Bible and the Value of "Pi" has a further observation.

PI in the Bible

I find this ratio 111/106 or (3x37)/106 very interesting.

The words "round," "compass," compassing," and "compassed" are found together in the King James Bible in 15 verses and the total sum of these words together in these verses is 37. The first occurrence of the number 15 in Pi occurs at position 314 counting from the decimal point.

“And he made a molten sea, ten cubits from the one brim to the other: it was round all about, and his height was five cubits: and a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about. And under the brim of it round about there were knops compassing it, ten in a cubit, compassing the sea round about: the knops were cast in two rows, when it was cast.” (1 Kings 7:23-24)

Verse 23

molten” 15th occurrence in the KJB and the first occurrence of 15 in Pi is at position 314.

sea” 111th (37x3) occurrence in the KJB of this word

ten” 111th (37x3) occurrence and 106th verses in the KJB containing this word (111/106) The 12th (37 is the 12th prime) occurrence of 3 in Pi is at position 111 and the 1st occurrence of 106 in Pi is at position 1011 (337 x 3).

ten cubits” occurs 15 times in the KJB and the first occurrence of 15 in Pi is at position 314.

the other” 111th (37x3) verse in the Bible containing this phrase.

round” found 320 times in the KJB and position 320 in Pi contains the 22nd occurrence of 7 in Pi. (22/7 = 3.142..) The word “round” is found in 296 (37x8) verses of the Bible and exactly 37 times in the New Testament. It is found in 259 (37x7) verses of the Old Testament in 157 (157 is 37th prime) chapters and 157 x 2 = 314. Furthermore, position 320 in Pi counting from the decimal point is the 3rd occurrence of the number 74 (37 x 2) in Pi.

thirty cubits” 7th occurrence of this phrase in the Bible.

cubit*” 111th (37x3) (in phrase “thirty cubits”) occurrence in the KJB.

verse 24

round” 111th (37x3) occurrence (1st) in the KJB.

round about” 106th (1st) occurrence of this phrase in the Bible. (111/106)

round about” this phrase is found in 285 verses of the Bible and the 1st occurrence of 360 (degrees in a circle) in Pi is at position 285. The 5th occurrence of 285 in Pi its at position 3141 counting from the decimal point.

ten” 112th (7x16) occurrence of this word in the Bible.

knop*” 12th (37 is the 12th prime) verse in the Bible containing the words “knop” or “knops” and 30 x 10 = 300 (the number of knops around the circumference of the “sea”). The 3rd occurrence of 37 in Pi (37x3 = 111) occurs at position 300 counting from the decimal point.

cubit” 22nd occurrence and the 15th verse containing this word in the Bible. (the “ten in a cubit” is referring to the “thirty cubits of verse 23 thus the number 7 and 22 are connected 22/7 = 3.142…). The 1st occurrence of the number 15 in Pi is at position 314.

the sea” 74th (37x2) occurrence of this phrase in the Bible.

round” 112 (7x16) occurrence (2nd) of this word in the Bible.

cast” 73rd occurrence (1st) in the Bible.

two” 411th (137 x 3) occurrence in the Bible and the 337th verse containing this word.

cast” 74th (37x2) occurrence in the Bible.

The ratio (111/106) shows up in the “ten” of verse 23 which is referring to the diameter of the “sea” and again in verse 24 in the phrase “round about” which is referring to the “knops” around the circumference of the sea.

3 x 111/106 = 3.1415…

Therefore:

The circumference (30) times the ratio (111/6) divided by the diameter (10) yields the first 5 digits of Pi which are 3.1415.

That is the best you can come up with? i understand that the decimal point is missing but you cannot have a fractional position in counting digits in Pi. Did you miss the fact that Pi is encoded to the first 5 digits in both 1 Kings 7:23 and 1 Kings 7:24 in the King James Bible?

I would think words have meaning attached to them .What's the one meaning of the word thirty seven used in parable with no other meaning attached?

the other” 111th (37x3) verse in the Bible containing this phrase.
Does the word thirty seven mean the other

sea” 111th (37x3) occurrence in the KJB of this word

Does the word thirty seven mean sea?

ten” 111th (37x3) occurrence and 106th verses in the KJB containing this word (111/106) The 12th (37 is the 12th prime) occurrence of 3 in Pi is at position 111 and the 1st occurrence of 106 in Pi is at position 1011 (337 x 3).

Does the word thirty seven mean ten?

It would seem the word thirty seven is in many of your equations in a way, it would be like finding the gospel in the stars.Just draw your picture you will never run out of dots. I would think the poetic language of God as the same spirit of faith is according, as it is written.

Words have meaning attached other meaning
added can change the authors intent and sometime two number words used together carry another meaning. .What is the spiritul meaning of the word thirty seven ?

I would advise you to look over the entire thread but the number 37 is connected with wisdom. Revelation 13:18 and Revelation 17:9.

666 = 37 x 18
"wisdom" = 222 (37 x 2) verses in the King James Bible and Revelation 17:9 is 222nd verse
Revelation 17 is the 1184 (37 x 32) chapter of the Bible
truth = 222 (37 x 6) verses in the KJB
Christ = 555 (37 x 15) times in the KJB.
Saviour = 37 times in the KJB

The gematria of Genesis 1:1 in the original Hebrew is 2701 = 37 x 73
The gematria of Jesus in the Greek is 888 = 37 x 24
The gematria of Christ in the Greek is 1480 = 37 x 40
The gematria of Jesus in simple English is 47 = 37 x 2

It doesn't mean ten = 37 or "round about" = 37 or the like. It is more of a structure or pattern that is contained within the the words and phrases of the King James Bible

The first instance of the string '15' occurs at the 3rd position in the decimal expansion of pi
Not the 314th.

That's all.

Agreed, it should have said 2nd which would have been more appropriate anyways (15 x 2 = 30 the circumference of the "sea") Thank you, my mistake. What are your thoughts on 1 Kings 7:23 and 24 concerning the ratio 111/106 and Pi?

Circles in our DNA connected with the number 37. This bears repeating but the 1st occurrence of the number 37 in Pi is at the 46th position counting from the decimal point. A 37 and 46 residing together just like in our cells (which are patterned after the Tabernacle that God commanded Moses to construct).

How did you come up with the 888?
OK, wonderful. How did these numbers get assigned to the Greek letters? I can see the 1-10 but it still isn't valid. But then that all jumps to double then triple digits arbitrarily.

This is an image of the three Greek letters that make up the number "six hundred threescore and six" (this is an image of the P-47 fragment which is purported as being one of the oldest) and gematria is used to calculate its value since the Greek at that time was an alphanumeric language. Here it is the Strongs Concordance.

I know this is a late response but the notion that this number is spelled out in the Greek as an earlier post on this thread asserts, that I could not quote, is simply false. This same gematria is use to calculate the value of Jesus (888) and Christ (1480) in the Greek. This needed to be clarified since a clear understanding of 666 is necessary and probably is very important to know for a complete understanding of the number.

No such prescription for rightly dividing the word of God called Gematria

What is in the Bible that is not connected to the perfect wisdom of God? Seven speaks of his perfect wisdom . Seven defines perfect.

God does not use numerology but rather parables. Words like Six hundred and sixty six already have a meaning set aside that person does not need to be a mathematician to figure out We compare the spiritual meaning of the word to the spiritual meaning of the word not the decimal equivalent of a number to the decimal. The gospel is hid in words not numbers.

666 is the mark of Cain natural unconverted man .

I do not see one example of the use of the word thirty seven . Does it mean Pi and if so how would knowing the diameter of a circle bring the gospel?

1 Corinthians 4:6 NIV
Now, brothers and sisters, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, “Do not go beyond what is written.” Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other.
