[FONT=&quot]LOVE In a biblical sense is a deep discussion. It is unpacked in scripture within a variety of contexts. I want to start by looking at the area of the love of God demonstrated through the gospel (good news) of Christ's sacrifice. Words are cheap but demonstration has power. In this case the power to save us from destruction.[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot]John Ch 3:16 (E.S.V) shows the ultimate demonstration of love. “For God so loved the world, that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." This is reiterated in Romans 8:32 "He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, freely give us all things?" My final example is from Ephesians 2:4 "But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy ..." I believe that true Christian love must start with understanding, believing and receiving His love for us.[/FONT]
[FONT=&quot]Within my first biblical reference John 3:16 we see God's love and the cause and effect of it. God promises us that through belief in Him and His Sons actions we may experience an 'open door' to personal salvation, but the flip side of that is that through turning our back and denying faith- we will perish. There is a choice available here. Interestingly enough; recently, allot of my topics have highlighted our God given ability to make choices. God wants us to choose Him, His ways, and to follow biblical direction.
My second passage (Romans 8:32) reemphases the Fathers authority to lay down the life of His Son Jesus. This was; and is the ultimate demonstration and expression of His love for us. Showing the power of God's action and the effect of it.
Finally we see the love of God expressing great mercy. Mercy is defined as God not giving us what we deserve, again demonstrated through the laying down of the life of His son Jesus Christ. This is the central truth of the gospel and the starting point of faith in Him. Belief that God has done this is the only way that we may have restoration and relationship with Him.
Repentance is defined but choosing to turn from living for ourselves and changing direction, which means living for God. To make this choice we must first believe that He is who He says He is and He Has done what He says He has.
This may seem quite a dry and obvious paragraph, and I realise that there is much more to it than this, but I just wanted to lay a foundation of the the gospel demonstrated by the loving authority of the Father who chose to lay down His only son, and that He demonstrates that it's His desire that none might perish by this very act, which reveals to us His nature and His wonderful mercy.
I haven't gone into my own belief about the Spirits work within this or our own personal response. This is just the bare essence of the gospel of grace. A starting point for us to ponder.

John 15:13, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

John 10:17, “Because of this the Father loves Me, because I lay down My life, in order to receive it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to receive it again. This command I have received from My Father.”

Hebrews 9:28, “So also the Messiah, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, (Isa 53:12) shall appear a second time, apart from sin, to those waiting for Him, unto Salvation.”

Hi VOH

Nice thread topic. The scriptures never separates LOVE from God's Law in fact it is only through LOVE that God's Law can be fulfilled in those who walk in His Spirit. This is the New Covenant of God writing His Law (10 commandments) in our heart (Hebrews 10:26-27)

The fruit of faith is OBEDIENCE to God's Law and known disobedience or breaking God's Law (James 2:11; Romans 7:7; 1 John 3:4) is a sign of UNBELIEF and the need to seek God for forgiveness and a new Heart to LOVE through being born again.

The scripture you quoted 1 John 3:23-24 is about LOVE but you missed the CONTEXT which is connecting LOVE to OBEDIENCE to God's 10 commandments (1 John 3:3-15)

The second lot of scripture you quoted from Matthew 22:36-40 shows the connection between LOVE and OBEDIENCE. Jesus is actually quoting from Deuteronomy 6:5 (First great commandment of LOVE to GOD) and Leviticus 19:18 (Second great commandment of LOVE to man). Jesus finishes by connecting LOVE to OBEDIENCE. On these two commandments hang all the LAW and the Prophets.

Let's look at the scriptures and a few others.....

Matthew 22
36, Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37, Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38, This is the first and great commandment.
39, And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40, On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Links to..........

Romans 13
8, Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loves another hath fulfilled the law.
9, For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
10,
Love works no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Links to...........

James 2

8, If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
9, But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
10, For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
11, For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law
12, So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

Yep Jesus, James, Paul and John all agree that Obedience is the FRUIT of LOVE to God's LAW which is by FAITH in God's Word and the work of God in those that walk by Faith following God's Word.

On the other hand we read of those who do NOT have the fruit of FAITH which is OBEDIENCE NOT being the Children of God...

1 John 3
3, And every man that hath this hope in him purifies himself, even as he is pure.
4, Whosoever commits sin transgresses also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
5, And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6, Whosoever abides in him sins not: whosoever sins hath not seen him, neither known him.
7, Little children, let no man deceive you: he that does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8, He that commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sins from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9, Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10, In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever does not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loves not his brother.

Jesus, James, Paul and John all agree together that LOVE produces the fruit of OBEDIENCE to God's LAW through FAITH. This is the NEW Covenant (Hebrews 8:10-12)

God's 4th commandment is one of the ten ( Exodus 20:8-11 ) and like any of the ten, if we knowingly break it when God asks us not to we stand guilty before God of committing sin (James 2:8-12). If we do not seek him in repentance and forgiveness w e are in danger of the Judgement (Hebrews 10:26-27)

There is not one scripture in ALL of God's WORD that says God's 4th commandment is now ABOLISHED and we are now commanded to worship God on Sunday in it's place.

Sunday worship is a tradition and teaching of man that has lead many to break the commandments of God. Jesus says that if we follow the traditions of man that break the commandments of God we are not following God (Matthew 15:3-9)

May God bless you as you seek Him through His Word.

As I stated there are many fruits of love, it's a discussion which has many aspects to it. I was going to include the scripture where Jesus says if you love me you will obey me, but I wanted to share simply the gospel starting point of belief in Christ sacrifice for us, and that he did it through His love for us. I don't believe I was 'twisting scripture' mearly emphasising the nature of the Father in correlation to His decision to lay down the life of His son. Keeping it simplistic for new believers, or those seeking a starting point. What I said fits the context of the whole bible. Being topical obedience was another subject, and I didnt want to go onto that incase I lost the interest of people who were reading it. But I agree with everything you have said and thank you for adding it. God bless you and keep you.

I would like to go onto discussing our response to His love and finish off with our demonstration of that love to others. Perhaps looking at the characteristics of love. Thanks again.

We could pick a characteristic of love each and do a short exposition and application on it. I find it interesting that the first characteristic is patience lol :)

Worship is a lifestyle is it not? Demonstrated through obeying His word and being thankfull in all things.

We could pick a characteristic of love each and do a short exposition and application on it. I find it interesting that the first characteristic is patience lol :)
The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

Not only is the Gospel the foundation of love, but everything is about love, the law,and our behavior,to be right with God.

Everything is based on love that has to do with being right with God,and the Gospel is the love of God towards us,and the love of us towards God.

1Co 13:13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Charity is greater than faith, and hope, for faith and hope are only needed on this earth, not in heaven, but love will go on forever.

The only thing that will remain from this earth is our soul, and love, and all else will pass away.

The law is love, for it can only be love, for love is all that will remain of all we did while on earth.

1Co 13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

Paul said that he could have all faith so that he could remove mountains, but if he did not have charity he is nothing.

Gal 5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.

Faith works by love, and it not faith alone, but love alone, for everything stems from love.Lack love then there is no faith.

Joh 13:34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
Joh 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

By the Spirit we can obey this commandment.

Rom 13:10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Everything is based on love that causes us to be right with God,so God would have love for us,and the Gospel is the foundation of love, for everything that is good, and pure, and holy,is motivated by love, and a lack of love is sin.

1Jn 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

Act 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Heb 12:3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
Heb 12:4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.

Isa 53:1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?
Isa 53:2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
Isa 53:3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Isa 53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
Isa 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Isa 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isa 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
Isa 53:8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
Isa 53:9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
Isa 53:10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
Isa 53:11 He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.
Isa 53:12 Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Mat 27:27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.
Mat 27:28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
Mat 27:29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
Mat 27:30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.
Mat 27:31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

Jesus is God manifest in the flesh,God and man in harmony, and the man Christ Jesus the personal human body of God,so God must love us a great deal for His own human body to go through all that suffering so we could be with Him,because God does not need us to survive,or to entertain Him for He does not get lonely, but Him being love could do no different but give us His human body as a sacrifice, especially since He created us and we are His property.

The man Christ Jesus would of even went through more pain that He did if that is what it took for us to be saved.

Thank you I read your post. I love the way that His love for us emphasises the richness and cruelty that He bestowed upon Himself to carry our sins to the cross of Calvary. You also mentioned the inseparable truth of the God-man. So important, understanding that He had to be full God and fully human to achieve His sacrifice and then resurrection unto glory. One of my favourite verses is Philippians Ch 2 . 1So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,[SUP]a[/SUP] 6who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,[SUP]b[/SUP] 7but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant,[SUP]c[/SUP] being born in the likeness of men. 8And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Sowing and reaping, this is how I picture God's plan of reconciliation. He gave love and in turn received love. We only love God because He first loved us and it is this principle of reciprocity that causes a great expanse of an ever growing bond. Our love for God increases as our revelation of His love unfolds. This makes our love for the Lord ever increasing as throughout eternity He will reveal to us the riches of His grace towards us.

Love is the foundation of the Gospel, but more importantly God's love. It is the crux of our relationship, the fuel that carries us into eternal life. Christ came not to condemn the world but save it. It is this love for us that enabled Jesus to bare our sins, as He looked forward to the joy set before Him as He endured the cross. We are that joy, a love story written before the foundation of the world.

Amen good post and it focuses on God's love for us in Christ. The question comes up; whose love should we focus on? Our love for God OR God's love for us? Whose love is steady? Constant? Unchanging? Unending? Dependable? Secure?
