Several times this rule has completely helped me into having a correction jettisoned in favor of having a post inaccurately posted.

What is the purpose of this???

5 minutes???

5 hours would be unecessary but might do what the 5Minute rule is trying to.....prevent?
....cure????...... Do????

Why is this in the bible discussion forum?
And this rule has been in place for years, and the site owner said it's staying that way. The site has been around over 15 years and they picked that number for a few reasons.
Not really a big deal if you proofread first.

well?....not being and "admin", or anything?...All I can give ya is an educated guess.
from experiences "seen" in what some people post on these pages? Some people have this certain tendency, to post something....then retract "bits and pieces" of controversials, that have been responded to, and then start into ridiculing those respondants who replied, by falsely CLAIMING that they are putting words in the mouth of the "their" post!
Yeah? Ya wouldn't think people would do such a thing....and, some people wouldn't....Yet? There are, other people, that certainly WOULD!! And have!
Hence, the 5 minute rule, when it comes to "editing."
But?....This is just an educated guess, and my humble opinion.

We all have our opinions.

It is in bible discussion because that is where it matters in the accurracy department.

None of your post addresses my topic anyway.
I constantly edit my posts.
Yes we can all do better, but if we only have 5 minutes, and that is some great protocal, why then would not 5 seconds be the ultimate?

I would venture that for every 1000 posts benefitting from the ABILITY to edit, that yes, there are 5 or so that edited under the supposed improper motives.

My point stsnds. It is an intequated protocal

That, basically,is my point.
I am still learning this phone and spell check goes to some french default. That renders no brainer spelling corrections useless, and with my big fingers ,about every fifth word has a miscue.
With that many errors it would be nice to not get bit.

That last post had errors that were fixed.

I left the last ones in on purpose.

It seems rude to read posts that have so many errord in then that they can be interpreted about 4 or 5 ways

Ok here is my two cents. I used to mod a forum that used the same software as this . We had a similar rule in place. It allowed you to edit for the normal reasons like spelling and to clear things up or to remove stuff you may think twice about. The time limit also helped to allow folks to follow a conversation. The limit also helps the server keep track of rep points and likes given
or received . One post given a rep or like affect many members. So we are given some time to clean stuff up and a limit is set to maintain continuity.
I hope that makes sense.

This is why, I shall NEVER own a smartphone!
I am already as "connected" as I want to be!
It's just not healthy! Spiritually, as well, as fleshly!

like has been said, just proof read before you post.

if on the other hand you do not do that and want to make major corrections to your post, then simply repost it and add
corrections and or delete the part you wish you had not written

I don't know why people get so riled up over this

frankly, I think it's a good thing...from time to time somewhat inconvenient perhaps, but overall a good thing

ps..since you inserted this into the BDF, you are sure to get folks disagreeing with you ;)

Another thing. The site owner gives a place to express ourselves. This is his site . He is generous and gives us a great latitude in our posting .
When it comes down to it . Its his ball his basketball court. He has done alot let's not complain about a free gift.

Frankly, anyone trying to contribute intelligently in this kind of forum, while using a phone, is asking for trouble. If you aren't willing to proofread carefully BEFORE you post, you can expect to be blasted for your poor spelling, wacky ideas, disjointed thoughts, unsupported assertions, and heretical statements.

It's kind of like driving a car. You need to pay attention, because if you miss the speed limit sign, it's still your fault for speeding. You ARE responsible and accountable for what you post, whether you like it or not. Sure, you can apologize, restate, clarify, and so on, but in the end, you own what you posted, and if reflects on you. Therefore, be cautious.

As an aside, a five-minute editing window in real life would be wonderful! Five minutes to edit a post is generous.

If people could change what they said after someone pointed out their errors, can you imagine how many would change their post and pretend the other person just misread what they said or meant? Yeah, the time limit is there to help keep people honest, though you have to be honest to begin with in order to stay honest. I am not trying to imply anything about you by saying this :) I have met many dishonest people online, including here.

Considering the fact that people already read so much into simple statements, things that simply are not there, the five minute edit means that we can be sure what we read is what was said right out of the gate, and not changed an hour later after seeing the responses to it. If you take care with what you say, and preview your posts for formatting, grammar and spelling, five minutes is plenty unless you tend to be long winded. I realize people want more, but perhaps the problem is on their end.

Sometimes I will see a post of mine days later and realize there was some spelling error or a word missing that I had meant to include, or a word repeated unintentionally, but most things like that are not deal breakers in terms of the overall message. Or someone else will say something and leave a NOT out of the sentence, but context informs that a NOT was meant to be there, and that can always be clarified in a subsequent post if someone else catches it and asks.

Keeping posts short and to the point helps :D

If that time limited was increased to ten minutes, it would definitely be better. The only other option is to complete your post off-line, and then cut and paste it in less than a minute.

There is a preview option where you can spend as long as you like checking to make sure everything is as you would have it be before you actually post it. Even after you post, you have a minute to make changes without any note being put on the post saying it was edited, and you have four minutes after that to make changes that will be be accompanied by a note saying the post was edited, with the time. If one is in the habit of making long posts, previewing necessarily takes more time. If within the first five minutes you find a glaring error that will take longer to fix, simply copy your post and then delete the whole thing, and start over by pasting it into the message box, editing, and previewing it to make changes :).

Even if you say something you wish you hadn't, or want to remove for any other reason, you have five minutes to do so by completely deleting your post. Don't be surprised if someone quotes your post before you get rid of it  Then the link back will go nowhere, but the record is still there. Some people are in the habit of making posts and then deleting them right away, but they still might be seen by others even if they are not quoted. I have had it happen too, where I see a new post listed in the sidebar, but when I click to go to that thread to read the entire post, it is not there. Hello he who shall not be named :D heh heh heh :):):)

A good way to avoid using the EDIT button is to just make sure the message you are about to send is correct. I do not know how the autocorrect works in phones but I assume you can also edit the autocorrect as you are typing? That would solve the problem.

I am living in the stone-age. I do not own a smart phone, in fact the new phone I just purchased is the updated version of Nokia3310.

I see so many people walking outside looking at their phones I decided I do not want to be one of those. I rarely take the phone with me when I go outside.

I did not choose the redneck lifestyle, the redneck lifestyle chose me.
