Those who govern toward righteousness, govern under God.
Romans 13:1 says, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” Similarly, Daniel 2:21 says, “[God] changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding..”
How is one expected to govern in a practical manner, under God? One is expected to govern with the welfare of everyone under their domain in mind, as we are all equal under God through Jesus. Also under God, unequal weights and measures, and uneven scales are an abomination.
We see among us the politicians who look to pass laws against abortion and homosexuality, because under God, abortion is murder and homosexuality is an abomination. But God also requires that the needy be attended to, and it’s hypocrisy that the same evangelical politicians who go around saying “Lord, Lord” while they concentrate on laws against abortion and homosexuality and against a homosexual couple’s wanting to have their cake and eat it too, ignore the needy in their midst.
But if you ask them why they ignore the needy, they’ll tell you that it’s not the government’s job to look after the needy. Some may say that it’s up to the government to secure our nation so things like houses of worship can take care of the needy. But have those houses of worship, the churches and synagogues, succeeded in taking care of the needy when we continue to have poor people among us, and people who can’t afford the things that people in other countries get, such as healthcare and welfare to the extent they can’t provide for themselves? I think not…I think not.
And those politicians who enact laws against abortion and homosexuality continue to ignore the needy of whom there aren’t enough resources among the clergy to help them out. So, does it not say in 1 Timothy 5:8 “But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever”? And who is the household to a politician in office but the people s/he governs over?
And what of some of our leaders who say to some, ‘I won’t help you unless you give me certain favors that we are to keep secret from others,’ forcing those asking for help, to be put in compromising positions? And what of our leaders who are determined to polarize us? Does it not say in 1 Timothy 3:1-5, “The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity…for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church?”
In the Book of Solomon, Solomon is faced with having to lead a great nation of people, and he asks God how he can do that. Our politicians, who are determined to polarize our nation, take advantage of the poor and needy, and seek their own gain at the expense of same should be asking God that same question.
