PRACTICING GOD’S PRESENCE[/h]

God has promised you His constant presence (Hebrews 13:5), but are you conscious of His presence every day? When you are conscious of His presence every day, you will experience a peace that gives you rest, joy inexpressible in your spirit and a power that nothing in this world can offer. In fact, you will begin to be peaceful and powerful like Jesus. You will speak and behave like Him. This is because you cannot be in God’s presence without His beauty, love, peace, power and glory rubbing off on you.

But how do you practice being conscious of God’s presence?

Start by seeing God with you in whatever you do and wherever you are. For example, at your board meeting, while deliberating on issues, see the Lord there in the boardroom with you, guiding you in your thinking. And you can be sure that His presence will bring clarity of thought and wisdom to you. You will find yourself flowing with great and sound ideas.

If you are going for an interview, see the Lord there in the interview room with you, putting answers in your mouth. Your nervousness will melt away as you see His favor on you bringing on smiles and approving nods from the interviewers.

Perhaps you are going for surgery. Well, see the Lord in the operating theatre with you, guiding the hands of the surgeons. Your worries will dissipate because nothing can go wrong in the Lord’s presence.

If you are in the middle of an argument, see the Lord standing within earshot. Your words will change and your body language will become more reconciliatory as you see Him right there with you extending His grace to you. There will be a restraint which is not borne of willpower, but which comes supernaturally when you know that the One who loves you and watches over you is with you.

Beloved, when you become conscious of God’s presence in your life, worries and fears will have no foothold in your mind. You will see Him maximizing your joy and fun, and prospering you in what you say and do!

Being in His presence gives perspective and needed clarity for the truth. Without that., we are open to many other perspectives that continually seek to have our ear then our heart. So this devotional speaks to the need to be reminded of practicing His presence so we can continually be reminded of the truth of our lives in relation to Jesus and not the world.

The writer gives a practical suggestion on how we can go through the day such as those of us who are in business and go to business meetings (it can be intimidating with all the important bosses I've discovered) It's so easy to be engulfed in the 'importance' of the meeting so as to overlook the reality that Jesus is the Lord of our lives. Being reminded that Jesus is Lord of all and in all makes all the difference in how we sit there at the table.

Practicing His presence is vital to the success of my day. Seeing Jesus in all makes us see the proper perspective and causes us to act accordingly. When Jesus is Lord., we are not under anyone or anything. The day is a success because Jesus is in all and over all in us. Had I not learned to practice the presence of the Lord., I'd be as before., weak and beggarly at the mercy of circumstances around me.

Practicing Jesus presence causes a conscious awareness that He is over all and my worries fade away and the promises He gave flow into my mind and heart all fresh and new. And as the writer of the devotional says., the foothold for worry and fear is lost to the security and love found in the presence of Jesus. And it takes making that daily choice even by the hour., will I remember to practice the presence of Jesus? YES Lord., I will remember You today in the different situations and with all the different people and other choices made today., I will remember You Jesus.

This effort at constant mental awareness I think causes problems in one's daily walk.

God is there whether we are straining to realize His presence or not, so why not just ......

Be still and know that I am God.
Psalm 46:10

If we are focusing on ourselves and our thoughts/consciousness we are not focusing on God. IMO

I agree with you because the 2 ideas are not exclusive. How we think is determined where our minds have been camping. If I go to the garage at night for work and the lights don't work., I'm not afraid because during the day I've practiced the presence of Jesus. Who He is and how He promises to take care and watch over me in all situations.

My mind won't go to things like oh no., there could be a skunk in this garage!., oh no., now the heat won't work and the pipes will freeze while I'm at work tonight because the weather report says it's going below 0!

Our minds and thoughts go with us all day, we can't get away from them but we can learn how to "think on these things" So as you said Grace., we are being still and knowing He is God. But if we had not practiced that today., we would be more susceptible to thinking on worry and dread and not on being still and knowing He is God., who we have faith in to take care of these situations we find ourselves in throughout our lives.

As I've heard a well known Christian lady speaker say., "where the mind goes the man follows."

This is so true, I have absolutely experienced this.

I like the way you explain it better. :D:D

You 2 were saying the same thing diferently: Its the Holy spirit that unites us and our diferent languages. We are easily distracted in this life, even from the perspective of being still in His presence, "forgetting what's behind I go on," Presently camping to find quiet time. Its a learning here as well.

This morning woke up hearing: Turn your heart to Him. Jesus left us His will as our inheritance to turn to Him and be empowered by His Spirit. We are slow learners and should not be discouraved.

That was encouraging, JoanieMarie-- thank-you for sharing that!
Have you heard of the born-again Catholic brother in the 16th century, Brother Lawrence? He was a humble cooks helper, who came back from a war very depressed and discovered the continual presence of Jesus, spiritually by keeping in His presence by asking for the grace to do so continually throughout the day--to love God continually. Not bashing Catholics, but, the church said, "he must be crazy!" No theology, no nothing, just love God continually-- But, he said, it did take some discipline at first, but, then, once his depression went away, he was in God's presence the rest of this life! What a ticket!

I was at a charismatic-Catholic meeting, and the Philipino lady speaking said excitedly, "There's Jesus now, Right now!! He's standing right there-- His hand is resting on that man's shoulder, right there wearing the black shirt!!" Not wanting to miss another opportunity, the man in front of me put his hand on his friends shoulder to confirm what she was seeing in the Spirit--

So, you are right! Jesus was with us that day, in everyone's presence, even though we didn't see HIm, and was there to reassure and comfort everyone there--
What an amazing gift to stay in God's presence and for the speaker to see things in the spiritual world--

I've never heard of Brother Lawrence. I've not seen any physical manifestations of Jesus or angels. But my experiences don't trump anyone else's. People are all so different and although I'm not sure how personalities work as far as relating to the spirit., I do know what I've experienced and know Jesus is always with me.

It's my own choice of mind that allows me to remember Him and experience being aware of Him more and more. . He gives us the instructions on how to fellowship with Him and that is by the Spirit interacting and interceding on our behalf., and through the Word., reading it and getting it into our minds and hearts. "think on these things" We are supposed to learn about Him and how He loves us. The day to day events can get our eyes off of Him but it's our choice to practice being in His presence. When I do., all is well. When I don't ., nothing makes sense.

His love is bigger than us. For that I'm so grateful.

I'm so thankful too that He first loved us and how His love for us is not changed by the way we are loving Him back. For some it takes a loooooong time to learn just how much Jesus loves them. Even after many years some Christians don't understand they are loved more than they can love Him.

Some believe that Jesus only loves them as much as they love Him. But of course, that is wrong according to Scripture. But because we human beings are so limited in "our own understanding" about Godly things., we can mistakenly treat the Lord as we have been treated. He wants us to step out into his love and grace that loves us regardless and apart from our own abilities. It is then we learn to love Him. We love Him because He first loved us.

Wasn't it Brother Lawrence that wrote the book, Practicing the Presence of God? I read it when first born again. Many years ago. :)
This study is from the writhing of brother Laurence

The practice of the Presence of God

To persevere in spiritual life:
"Not wasting time, because the days are evil."
"Now is the accepted time of renewal," there is not another time elsewhere: not mindful of God as we should, we suffer delusions of understanding and affections against us and faith alone for us. "Many are they that rise up against me… but You O Lord are a shield for me... I laid me down and slept, I awaked for the Lord sustained me."

Those in agreement with God have the gale of the Holy Spirit and go forward even in sleep:
If the vessel is tossed with opposing winds and storms, there is always a way with the wind: tacking into the wind. Tactful to get past troubles of relationships, to turn to the Lord who is resting in the ship.
“There remains a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered into His rest has ceased from his works, as God did from His.” Having let go of desiring control, to delight in God and have His influence in the midst of relationships, that we may do as He please, to Love without expectations. Recalled to yield ourselves to God as often as we find ourselves wandering does not tire the body. Carried by His Spirit with inner peace, as an eagle soaring effortlessly, suspended and fixed in God. He embraces with Love and welcomes us to eat at His table that we may have strength to endure with patience: most necessary for a soldier in unknown territory, daily faced with trouble and danger. “You set a table before me in the presence of my enemies."

“You will keep in perfect peace whose mind is set on You, because he trusts in You.”
Doing unto Him what we commonly did for ourselves in work: Continuing with thanksgiving and not discouraged by the war against us from nature; persevering to bear the cross we find He requires no great accomplishments from us. “He has shown you, O man, what is good: and what does the Lord require of you, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God." Counting it Joy to be united to the will of God, we have sufficient light not to premeditate what to say. “A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be kind to everyone, patient in instructing those opposing themselves, that God give them repentance to acknowledge the Truth.” We help one another by encouragement, yet more by example pleasing to God in identity with Christ. Just as there is difference between acts of the intellect and of the will; the first of little value, acts of the will all important to be carried by His Spirit where we could not. “Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints."

“Godly sorrow leads to repentance but worldly sorrow leads to death."
If we cling to anyone or anything, with cares of our own life, we cannot be His disciple, to follow Him in the fellowship of His sufferings. Not to be compared with what He endured in taking the blame for His creation: to give us rest from our sorrow, and fear, and the hard bondage where we were made to serve.

One thing:
The Grace of God enables us to do One thing needful, forget our old life to go on to know the Lord.
"Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but One thing, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be like minded."
"One thing is needful: and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her."
"Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much."

Those exercised in Godliness comprehend this principal to grow in Love:
"What things were gain for me, those I counted loss for Christ. I count all things but loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things and consider them waste that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but through faith in Christ the righteousness that comes from God by faith. That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; if by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
"One thing you lack: Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

Everyone is capable of communion with God:
But we don’t become holy at once; thinking we are better we would go faster than grace and running ahead, fall in trouble. Worldly people do not comprehend, suffering what they are in despising the cross: for our heart is to be with our treasure. Many do not advance in Christ and remain stuck with their mind living in the past, when the Lord has taken away our shame: desiring to prove themselves, insisting on being in control while neglecting the love of God. God is near when we acknowledge our poverty and need, He never forsakes us, we forsake Him and fall that we may learn to continually repent: to turn our will to His will, to bring our thoughts and desires captive to God. A woman said to the Lord: Lord I thought You said Your yoke is easy? He replied: Mine is. To be born of God implies, carried by Him past trying to prove ourselves: as an eagle, exerting strength to reach the updraft, trusting to be carried effortlessly by His Spirit in fellowship with the Father.

Grace is God’s influence for renewal:
Thanksgiving carries us into His presence in contemplation worship: we cease from our understanding, to enter the relationship of Jesus with the Father. "I am with you always, even to the end of the world." We can do all things with the Grace of God, persevering with thanksgiving; He will grant at once what was deferred many years. God knows best what we need and all that He does is for our good. If we knew how much He Loves us, we would be ready to receive the bitter cup as well as the sweet from His Hand. Afflictions appear intolerable if we see them in the wrong light; but how can we see differently until we come to Him and “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” We deceive ourselves seeking God for favors that don't bring us near Him; thinking of another time elsewhere.
"Let us therefore fear, lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. For we who have believed do enter into rest."

There is more in this that it's going to take me more time to dwell on it and re read. I only got part way through and like what I read. Thank you for sharing Stillness. I think some of Brother Lawrence's prayers were posted once before by MessageOfTheCross too.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Christian disciplines will not bring the presence of the Lord nor give you victory over sin, the world, the flesh, and the Devil. It will only bring inconsistency's and failure. Under the "Law" you have the "Tree of the knowledge of good and evil" that brings a form of godliness. Many things that are preached and taught by pastors in the name of Jesus is deception and false doctrine. Mixing law and grace is spiritual adultery. You have fallen from grace (Gal. 2:21).

In my language, Christian discipline = disciple, though agree that until we are led by the Spirit, to live in the presence of God; what Jesus said to His disciples on the night He was betrayed would apply to us. "All of you will abandon me this night."
Jesus also said, "I can do nothing of Myself but what I see the Father doing." While "Now we see dimly," this dim sight is enough Light to walk in to get more Light, but until we walk in the Light we have we will not get more light (Luke 8:18).
"I will enter His gates with thanksgiving in my heart."
"Count it all joy, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you?
Jesus was always in fellowship with the Father and left His will as our in heritance in the communion of the last supper. Yes His will is that we follow in the fellowship of His suffering and death to end our old life. Jesus assured us that He only lets us bear what we can handle to grow up in "Faith that labours through Love. "My hoke is easy and my burden is light."

Yes His will is that we follow in the fellowship of His suffering and death to end our old life. Jesus assured us that He only lets us bear what we can handle to grow up in "Faith that labours through Love. "My hoke is easy and my burden is light."
Brother Lawrence was a religious brother in the 17th century who was born in 1611. He was born to peasant (common-folk) parents in 1611, and joined the French army out of poverty. But, war made him depressed, and one day he experienced this:

"In the deep of winter, Herman looked at a barren tree, stripped of leaves and fruit, waiting silently and patiently for the sure hope of summer abundance. Gazing at the tree, Herman grasped for the first time the extravagance of God's grace and the unfailing sovereignty of divine providence. Like the tree, he himself was seemingly dead, but God had life waiting for him, and the turn of seasons would bring fullness. At that moment, he said, that leafless tree "first flashed in upon my soul the fact of God," and a love for God that never after ceased to burn. "

"A woman said to the Lord: Lord I thought You said Your yoke is easy? He replied: Mine is. To be born of God implies, carried by Him past trying to prove ourselves: as an eagle, exerting strength to reach the updraft, trusting to be carried effortlessly by His Spirit in fellowship with the Father. "

Suppose I need to clear up what I implied by a study of the writings of brother Laurence:
What I learned from His writing, summed up in one page in plain English, with added verses and explanations.
Part of a larger study, Journey to enter into rest, that I'm researching further. Yet there are many verses in the bible that can stand alone as guidance to keep us on the journey, to define our purpose. "Seek first the kingdom of God... The journey is returning to our first Love.

Jesus is the Way and the door, we can do nothing of ourselves without the Wisdom of God, neither does our prayer need to be filled with words, but agreement in a Love relationship. "God in heaven and you on earth, let your words be few." We do not attain union with God in our understanding, that's for beginning in the Way; otherwise wandering like stray sheep, seeking anxiously and unable to prepare our heart for an inner journey.
Contemplative prayer is to get past what we think we know in understanding. Praying in the Spirit is unknown to our understanding and communicates in agreement with the Spirit of God, built up in Faith, "As laborers together with God"

Contemplation worship:
"He that is joined to the Lord becomes one Spirit with Him."
Contemplation worship is obscure in this life, "Now we see dimly but then face." We lose ourselves in the Love of God who will restore much more than we have lost; hearing and speaking with God as nothing else real. Carried by the Spirit to forsake all things and enter His rest. Love is its own reward: to seek God as beloved as in the first year of marriage, effortlessly drawn to learn to love, motivating the relationship to develop of its own accord, to cease from ourselves and find rest in the beloved. In romantic love, what we see and hear, reason and speak, or eat and drink, doesn't distract from love when thanksgiving rules the heart. Carried by His Spirit and not disquiet when caught up in trouble of relationship, since He is with us in trouble and we can’t without Him put away our divided spirit that interrupted God. "Man that is born of woman is of few days and full of trouble." We are in trouble when carried emotionally, we long to be loved intimately but having left our first Love in God we will not be united as one and relationship becomes work. Adversity works for good to face our need for help, to learn of Him in humility: to become one is no longer about needing to be loved, but learning to Love. When trying to achieve to impress our mate we don't Love as God Loves. "It remains, that both they that have wives be as though they have none." To cease planning and wishing with imagination, to enter His House in a journey of discovery we can’t imagine; having agreement more wonderful than we could dream, over time becomes habitual presence of God.
"If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from His Love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same Love, being one in spirit and of one mind."
