Ask God. Seriously, He said if you lack wisdom, ask and He'll give it. That's the only place I know where we get absolute truth. And once God Himself reveals a truth to you, nothing or nobody can take it away.

The thing is, no one can give you a concrete answer because the Bible doesn't specify exactly how one commits this sin. Only God knows for sure. This is just one of those things He chose not to be specific about for whatever reason(s). Maybe you can ask God about it when you meet Him.

Attributing the work of the Holy Spirit as done by the adversary. Pretty clear if you read what Jesus said of those who were blaspheming the Holy Spirit.

The mighty works of God attributed to the devil.

Mr 3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

Start at verse 22 and see the entire explanation from Jesus.

For the cause of Christ

Your not alone Socretes., Every Christian has asked this question from reading the Bible learning. Here is an excellent answer to your question. I concur with Mr. Ellis who wrote this on his website.

I tell you the truth, all the sins and blasphemies of men will be forgiven them. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin. (Mk 3:28-29)

Although many fear that they have done unforgiveable things, Jesus clearly said that there is only one unforgiveable sin, and that is the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. What does it mean to blaspheme someone? You might have heard that it is taking the Lord’s Name in vain, but that doesn’t fully capture the meaning of blasphemy. In the original Greek, the words blasphemy(Mt 12:32) and blaspheme (Mk 3:28) mean to slander or to speak falsely of someone in a manner than injures their good name. When people accused Paul of preaching grace as a license to sin, he said their reports were blasphemous, or slanderous (Rm 3:8). In other words, the reports were false and injurious to his reputation and message.

Jesus’ warning about not slandering the Holy Spirit is reported in three gospels (Mt 12:32, Mk 3:29, Lk 12:10). In two of those accounts the warning comes after Jesus had been driving out demons “by the Spirit of God” (Mt 12:28). But the Pharisees and law teachers thought Jesus’ power came from Satan. “By the prince of demons he is driving out demons” (Mk3:22). In other words, they were giving the devil credit for work done by the Holy Spirit. I would say that is fairly slanderous! In Luke’s account the context is a little different. This time Jesus was preaching to a crowd of “many thousands” when He gave them this famous couplet:

I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God. But he who disowns me before men will be disowned before the angels of God. (Lk 12:8-9)

Right there you have a baseball bat for whacking every single believer who has been cowardly in their witness. Well, you would, if Jesus didn’t immediately follow up with this:

And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. (Lk 12:10)

What are the forgiven sins?

Peters of the world be encouraged! Peter disowned Jesus before men but Jesus declares of him, “he’s forgiven!” When Jesus warned us about the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, He made it clear that the sin of speaking a bad word against the Son of Man, like all sins and blasphemies, will be forgiven. If you grew up cursing God, be assured that this sin – along with all your sins and blasphemies – was indeed forgiven when Jesus went to the cross (Col 2:13). You may have cursed God, but He has blessed you! How? By removing your sins as far as the east is from the west (Ps 103:12).

People sometimes ask me, why do you preachers say all our sins are forgiven? The answer is, because Jesus said so! This is the Good News and either you take Him at His word or you don’t. You are not forgiven because of anything you’ve done but in accordance with the riches of His grace (Eph 1:7). But just because you’re forgiven, it doesn’t follow that you’re saved. Grace is ineffective unless it’s matched with faith (Eph 2:8). And this brings us to…

The blasphemy of the Holy Spirit

As we have seen, to blaspheme someone is to slander or speak falsely about them. To understand what it means to speak falsely of the Holy Spirit, we must first discover what is true about Him and His ministry. Jesus tells us:

When He comes, He will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. (Jn 16:8-11)

Before He died, Jesus said that His blood would be poured out for the forgiveness of sins (Mt 26:28). If all the sins and blasphemies of men were forgiven at the cross, there’s only one sin the Holy Spirit can convict you of: “in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me.” Do you believe that you have been eternally redeemed through the blood of Jesus (He 9:12)? Do you believe the Spirit-inspired scriptures when they declare that Jesus’ sacrifice has done away with sin once and for all (He 9:26)? If not, you are resisting His conviction and calling Him a liar. I’m sorry to be so blunt, but the stakes are enormous. If you think you must do things like confess and repent from your sins in order to get what Christ has freely given, then you are denying Him and His finished work. You are walking after the flesh and slandering the Spirit. What’s the solution? Jesus tells us: “repent and believe the good news” (Mk 1:15)! Biblical confessionmeans agreeing with the Holy Spirit about your sins (1 Jn 1:9). Although you were completely and eternally forgiven 2000 years ago, you will not experience that forgiveness until you say “yes!” to Jesus.

Jesus also said, “unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and law-teachers, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven” (Mt 5:20). Writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul declared that the gospel reveals a righteousness from God, a gift that is received by faith from first to last (Rms 1:17). You are not righteous because of anything you’ve done, but because of everything He’s done. On the cross Jesus took our sin and gave us His righteousness (2 Co 5:21). In Christ you are as righteous as He is (1 Co 1:30). The second aspect of the Holy Spirit’s ministry is to convict you of your righteousness. If you believe Him you will look at yourself in the mirror and confidently declare, “I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus!”

The third aspect of the Holy Spirit’s ministry is that He will seek to utterly convince you that the prince of this world is condemned. You are not condemned, Satan is. If you are responsive to the Holy Spirit’s conviction, you will confidently declare, “there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus!” You will ask with wonder, “if God is for us, who can be against us?” With a firm revelation of the Father’s love for you – revealed through the Son and affirmed in your heart by the Spirit – you will have no fear of punishment (1 Jn 4:18). You won’t wonder whether God gives and takes away and you won’t view natural disasters as divine judgments. Instead of confessing your sins you will boldly confess your sonship and lay claim to all the rights of intimacy and inheritance that come with that (Gal 4:7).

The Holy Spirit must be the most misunderstood Person in the Bible. What is the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit? – it is refusing to believe the Holy Spirit’s testimony regarding the grace of God revealed through Jesus Christ. In a word, it is unbelief. Unbelief may manifest in a hard heart or in a religious spirit that confuses the devil’s work with the Lord’s. In either case, to resist the Holy Spirit is to trample the Son of God underfoot and treat as unholy the blood of the new covenant that sanctifies us. It is slanderous and insulting to the Spirit of grace who seeks to convince us – through the written word and revelation – that Jesus is true, you are forgiven, and He now offers you the free gift of His righteousness.

The Holy Spirit is not some Divine Policeman in the sky with a great big whacking stick. He’s actually the most awesome, powerful, and wonderful Being in the universe. And He is absolutely committed to your success in Christ!

Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul. For
if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

Blasphemy is like plagiarism ,which is attributing the work of the author and the finisher to another person or persons..

If Christ the anointing Holy Spirit of God has begun the work of salvation is us he will finish it to the end. He is the Alfa and Omega whose name is Jealous . He jealously guards that position of one not seen the invisible source of his faith that works in us to both will as the author and do as the finisher.Having it as to the one who has done all the work necessary appeasing the wrath of the father.. .

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Heb 12:2

Because he forbids that men walk by sight even the Son of man as that seen rejected blasphemy by men calling Him good and wanting to literally crown His corrupted flesh as good so that they could glory in his flesh . He always worked to discredit that seen for good and give the authorship as to the glory to God not seen as the good one.

Blasphemy as to walking by sight (Son of man) is forgivable as shown with Peter(Mathew 16).. But to attribute the work of the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons seen is not forgiven

We walk by faith the unseen eternal not by sight after that seen the temporal

Jam 2:1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory(not seen) , with respect of persons. (As that seen)

Jam 2:7 Do not they "blaspheme" that worthy name by the which ye are called?

If blasphemy against that seen was not forgivable then all of the apostles have failed the test.Blasphemy against the Son of man when he was here is questioned as to what manner of spirit whether it is walking by sight as the apostles did and failed or walking by faith in respect to God not seen as the invisible witness that works in us.

The conclusion of blasphemy the Son of man>

Luk 9:55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

Every time the spiritual meaning was hid in a parable blasphemy against the Son of man was committed. It was like the Son of man had disappeared and then came who is the greatest as the things of men. Three times they committed blasphemy against the Son of man as that seen in that way.

Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying. Then there arose "a reasoning among them" (philosophical) , which of them should be greatest. Luk 9:44

Although those who did know Christ after the flesh did commit blasphemy in respect to one seen and Christ no longer will appear in the flesh .Today it is transferred to a favorite teacher, or pastor who can cause a person to leave their first love the hearing of God not seen through His word, and have the faith of Christ in respect to men like Nicole the leader of the Nicolaitanes. the same warning applied to them (Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.

Do the first works...... believe eternal God not seen, not temporal men seen.

I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.(the hearing of faith) Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works(believe God not seen, not men seen) ; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitanes, which I also hate. Rev 2:2

Blasphemy of the Spirit is looking directly into the face of God in Christ through the revelation of the Spirit and then turning your back on Him in effect calling him a lying spirit--1 John 5:10.

You can be guilty of dong a lot of wrong things in this life and misunderstand a lot of things and still be saved at the Judgment, God's grace covering all of that, but this ain't one of them. You can't show contempt for the blood of Christ and somehow have the forgiveness of that blood. How do you get forgiven by the very thing you are showing contempt for and rejecting? That's why it's unforgivable. No grace of God is available to cover that sin. That's the one place the grace of God can not go. No sacrifice for sin remains for the one committing this offense against God.

This is a sin that only the elects can commit, when satan appears in Jerusalem claiming to be Christ only the elects will know he is not Christ, Mark 13:9-11, if they refuse the Holly Spirit to talk through them when they are taken to council it will be unforgivable. God bless

The "blasphemy against the Spirit" is mentioned in Matthew 12:22–32 and also in Mark 3:22–30. Jesus had just performed a miracle. A man who was possessed by a demon was brought to Jesus, and the Lord cast the demon out, healing the man of blindness and muteness.

A group of Pharisees spoke out and said - "It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons." (Matthew 12:24).

So the Pharisees, after having witnessed irrefutable proof that Jesus was working miracles in the power of the Holy Spirit, claimed instead that Jesus was possessed by a demon (Matthew 12:24). In Mark 3:30 Jesus is very specific about what the Pharisees did to commit blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

The blasphemy of the Holy Spirit cannot be duplicated today. Jesus Christ is not on earth performing a miracle for all to see with someone attributing that power to Satan instead of the Holy Spirit.

The sin that is unpardonable today is the state of continued unbelief.

The thing is, I've read and heard many explanations and interpretations. I want a concrete answer as to what blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is.

to know what it is we must look at the only person who spoke about it in Matt chapter 12 and Luke Chapter 12.

Jesus said in Matt 12 :31

Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

Jesus said this after Knowing the thoughts of the Pharisees : in Matt 12:25

And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:

in Matt 12:24 is why said what HE did in verses 25- 32

The Pharisees said :

Matt 12:24

But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

many,, many, people have opinions of what Blasphemy of the holy Spirit is however, Jesus is the only authority and His word on this biblical subject. In context with matt 12 and Luke 12, saying the work of Christ was of the Devil is blasphemy of the Holy Spirt .

Now the question as to if the Pharisees did in fact TO THIS. Jesus never state " YOU have Blasphemy the Holy Spirit. remember Matt Chapter 12 :25

HE KNEW Their Thoughts. Jesus did not come into the world to Condemn it but that they must be saved. He was trying to reach the Pharisees too HE did Die for them too. Jesus know where in the word of God nor did any other writer speak on this issue. Jesus is the only authority on this topic and His words.
The Context is clear.

What is not blasphemy of the Holy Ghost ?

here are some things I have heard with no Biblical proof:

1. you leave our church(certain denomination) you have blasphemy the Holy Ghost
2. If you do not agree with what I say the bible says about a certain topic, doctrine or teaching you have blasphemy the Holy Ghost

3. If you have SAID something about the Holy Spirit before you were saved you have done the unpardonable sin.

These are all errors and many use them today. They are used to control people. and bring condemnation by men , NOT of God.

Read matt and luke chapter 12 in context and pray. The Lord will help you :)

good point but, you forget Jesus said this before HE was crucified and HE did want the Pharisees to be saved . IT IS HARD TO SAY ANY MORE WITH IN THE BIBLICAL CONTEXT other than what Jesus said it is.

I hear what you're saying, it is a teaching that has been handed down and is popular. You've heard it and are passing it on. My guess is most learn it from Charles Stanley or some other popular preacher.

But that hermeneutic process doesn't fly. Let's apply it to the resurrection, another historic event.

See the problem?

The pharisees blasphemed the Holy Spirit by saying Jesus' was casting out devils thru Be'elzebub, the prince of devils, totally slandering & defaming the work of the Holy Spirit.

This is done on purpose & not by accident, knowing full well the Holy Spirit was doing the work.
