But woe to you that are rich, for you have received your consolation. Luke 6:24 RSV
It is a sin to be rich? If so, how much money do you have to have before you are rich?

There is nothing wrong with being rich. The danger lies in wanting more and more... you know... the love of money is the root of all evil. Being rich probably leads to stress of keeping up with the Jones's.

I wonder, though, if we accumulate a lot of money, if we should be looking around to see if there are those we could help with that money.

Absolutely!
I would think that God would expect that of us, but we can also give if we aren't rich and God will bless that.

What is rich? Those of us in the western world are rich beyond belief. Most people even 100 years ago could not even imagine the wealth we have.

As a society, the western world has become very dependent upon the riches of our technology. If taken away, not very many would even know how to survive. And this society is built on a house of cards, which would take almost no wind at all to cause it to fall and crumble away to nothing.

It will happen, and I believe that it will happen soon.

Your spot on there VW, If you have a roof over your head, running water, and a square meal each day.. you are in the top 10% richest in the world.

Now folks give that some thought.. and now think careful how you steward the riches God has given you!

Luke 6:20-26

And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

21Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.
22Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.
23Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.
24But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.
25Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. 26Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

This is not about money. This is a spiritual lesson as all of His lessons were. For the poor is the kingdom of God. And for those that weep now, they shall laugh. Financially, most of the world is poor! So we must look at what Jesus is telling us behind the surface.

Galatians 1:10-16

For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

11But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
12For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
13For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it:
14And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers.
15But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace, 16To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:

Here, Paul states that in the Jews religion, he profited! He was rich in this religion! Not in money, but in being zealous after the traditions of his fathers! This is the Jews religion, who had God speak to Israel out of the cloud! Yet, even this religion persecuted the church of God! He did not hunger in that he was full of knowledge of this religion.

Revelation 2:8-10

And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive;

9I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. 10Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

It's not just that this church doesn't have any money. This church goes through a lot of what Jesus had stated in Luke.

Revelation 3:14-18

And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

15I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
16So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
17Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: 18I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

This is the church, not a particular church but the collective spirit of people who belong to many religions, who take heed to false prophets. Who are not weeping now, but laughing and are full in the knowledge of their respective religions.

100% agreed......

going a step further, i believed it is a planned implosion.order out of chaos and all that.

what i love to remind myself of, though is that God has pulled the perfect double-double Cross on His enemies: they perform His judgments while working their evil.

the truth is not revealed to any but the saints: not even the angels know what is going to happen.

1 Corinthians 2
Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: 7But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: 8Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

if the princes and principalities had known that the Crucifixion meant VICTORY they never would have done it!!!!!!

thank you Jesus.

A humble man usually isn't a rich man.

God resists the proud, the ones who think they are better off with worldly things, with the deceitfulness of wealth, with their own pleasures & desires.

A truly wise Christian, would live the way Jesus did. Did Jesus have worldy wealth? No infact he taught it is harder to get into heaven when someone is wealthy because they don't care for God. They rely on their wealth to keep them safe, yet they are decieved. But Jesus parabelizes bird of the air & how they don't stress out or worry, yet the heavenly father takes care of them, How much more valuable are we then birds in his eyes?

Jesus told that rich man to:
SELL all he had & give to the poor.
That should be a clue. He commanded that from that man, but he was discouraged becaused he had more faith in his wealth then in God.

I guess being rich is dangerous because you put your faith in the wrong thing. But nothing is impossible with God.
Don't be a camel. xP

What condition we are in is not really up to us, not as His children. But when we begin to trust in what we have, rather than the Giver, we are in danger.

The danger with our present technological system and the economy that it supports is that when it does begin to fail, as it appears to be doing now, and when there is no one who is able to keep us in our wealth, our prosperity, and all seems to be lost; then will come a man who appears to have all the answers, who seems to have a plan that would keep this society from failing, keep it moving forward even.

How many will follow him?

It is rare for a man to have riches and not be corrupted. Just look at the materialism in American culture and you can see the results of riches. It isn't a sin in and of itself, but only the most humble can handle it (and mostly they don't wnat it anyway).

There is nothing wrong with being rich. It is the love of money that is the root of all evil like Silverwind stated. If I were rich I would give back ten percent and then some to the poor and needy.
