(Matthew 5:37) “But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

In your opinion,

A. What should you give a yes to?
B. What should you give a no to?

If you're a honest person, you give a Yes or No . No double mindedness .Cant rely on someones word who cant even answer directly .

God give us absolutes, YES OR NO .. So the bibles teachings are a good example of what we'd give yes or no to .

You'll notice if you read some of the threads they interject stuff into their talk, that makes them hard to believe or take seriously .
Example : They'll talk about how special they are, or they will start out with a lengthy commentary without much scriptures, and conclude it must be there, basically ask you to take their word for it . And many similar things people do.

If you have to resort to that, its best not to talk. A man of God will not be fast to talk. I maybe falling into that trap here .

longer the rant, likely longer the lie .

If you're a criminal, a laywer in a trial may ask the same question over an over, until inconsistency in the lies appear.
So if not careful, our own words can be destructive to us . Satan knows all the tricks, and this world is set up by Satan.
So just be honest, and do whats is right. Deal with people honestly.

James 3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

That little phrase, "in your opinion" allows all manner of views into the conversation. Jesus wasn't stressing what things warrant either a yes or a no. Rather, He was stressing that we are to be firm in our commitments, especially to truth, and not change our testimony according to circumstances, rewards, risks or popular opinion. If you're going to stand for something, stand firm.

Jesus point here is that we are not to swear by anything. Everything is of God. For us to make an oath by anything corrupts that thing because we are not able to fully do anything we set out to do. Better to just say Yes or No. Nothing to do with opinions.......

I think Dino is correct. We cannot claim to believe the Bible and read: "God is love." at one place, and then turn around and add: "except in certain circumstances... like when He said He hated Esau.... but even then God's "hating" is 'loving'." If we think that is true, our speech (our "yes" or "no") should be able to clearly explain it to someone else.

Frankly, all a bunch of blubbering like that does is come off as a fool wearing a sign-board standing on a street corner, hollering off into space. I think we need to use the Bible to develop beliefs..... NOT to just blissfully blurt out that "If God said it, I believe it." It's kind of like saying we are "Literalists", then we change what we read to try and make it say what we want to believe.

Actually Embankment is the only one who answered in the proper context. The focus of the verse is that we avoid taking oaths.

Unless God loves to hate, to believe God is love and say that God hated Esau is hypocritical, evidence of a double mind.

No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
Luke 16:13

And we all know what is written in James 4:8

Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
Matt 5:48

Kinda ironic considering what is written in Luke 6:46

Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
1 John 4:17

You should give your yes to what you know can keep, and say no why when you cannot keep a "yes" just to make someone happy in the moment. Be honest. Novel idea...

to us, it means NOT to apply your own opinions on certain things,
but to 'wait on The Lord', to put His Word into your mouth...
