1 Chronicles 24:4-6 King James Version (KJV)
4 And there were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar, and thus were they divided. Among the sons of Eleazar there were sixteen chief men of the house of their fathers, and eight among the sons of Ithamar according to the house of their fathers.
5 Thus were they divided by lot, one sort with another; for the governors of the sanctuary, and governors of the house of God, were of the sons of Eleazar, and of the sons of Ithamar.
6 And Shemaiah the son of Nethaneel the scribe, one of the Levites, wrote them before the king, and the princes, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, and before the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites: one principal household being taken for Eleazar, and one taken for Ithamar.

1 Chronicles 24:4-6 Expanded Bible (EXB)

4 There were more •leaders [chiefs]from Eleazar’s •family [descendants]than from Ithamar’s—sixteen •leaders [heads of their clans] from Eleazar’s •family [descendants] and eight •leaders [heads of their clans] from Ithamar’s •family [descendants]. 5 Men were •chosen [divided; allocated; organized] •impartially [orsimilarly] from Eleazar’s and Ithamar’s •families [descendants] by throwing lots. Some men •from each family were chosen to be in charge [were officials] of the •Holy Place [sanctuary], and some were •chosen to serve as priests [officials of God].
6 Shemaiah son of Nethanel, •from the tribe [son] of Levi, was the •secretary [recorder; scribe]. He recorded the names of those descendants in •front [the presence] of King David, the •officers [officials; leaders], Zadok the priest, Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the leaders of the •families [clans] of the priests and Levites. The work was divided by lots among the •families [clans] of Eleazar and Ithamar.

4 Its important that leadership be of God but often times it isn’t but within the church it always should be, we can be prone to have a person lead because they have leadership qualities but it only needs to be done because they are called by God into leadership. This men were then appointed as leaders.

5 Casting lots we don’t have to choose this way any more because we have the Holy
Spirit in us and He can guide us. Casting lots was a way of letting God make the decision, which means they aren’t choosing but letting ]God chose for them. We need to let God make the decisions in our life.

6 The kept records not all the records they kept we have today but the scriptures we still do. We can makes records of what God does but it isn’t as good as His word.

If I'm not mistaken David is conducting this, and its not by Gods command .
David got in trouble for doing this before.

In First Chr chapter 24 The situation is as follows.

In Num chapter 1, God had determined that the Levites would serve in the tabernacle (and later in the temple).

God had further determined that the descendants of Aaron would serve as priests.

By the time of David's reign, the priesthood had become too large to all serve at once.

In order to bring order out of chaos, David divided the priesthood into 24 courses by lot according to their genealogy.

The Jewish calendar (except on leap years) has 6 30 day months, and 6 29 day months for a total of 354 days.

that comes out to 50.57 weeks.

On the 3rd week of the first month, and on the 3rd week of the seventh month, all the courses served together.
On 14 Abib (Passover), on 6 Sivan (Shavouot), on 1 Ethanim (yom t'ruah), and 23 Ethanim ( eighth day of Sukkot) all the priests served together.

On the other 48 weeks each course would serve 2 weeks 6 months apart by the lot of their course.

David Did indeed arrange this but he did NOT get in trouble for it. He got in trouble for an unauthorized census.

Dear MarcR, Do you believe that these same 24 descendants of Aaron will be or are the 24 elders clothed in white, with crowns of gold about the throne of God of Rev. 4:4?

It is an interesting idea. I have to admit I never thought about it.

Dear MarcR, If the new Jerusalem descending out of heaven from God has 12 gates with the names of the 12 tribes of Israel (Rev.21:10-12), can one then assume, since our Lord's return will be to Jerusalem, that the descendants of Aaron will be the first around the throne of God. Are they the chosen to serve around the throne and are the Jews also his first, his chosen and forever beloved people? Is it dangerous to despise the Jews?
