Was reading this:

Genesis 13:11-13 NKJV
[11] Then Lot chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot
journeyed east. And they separated from each other. [12] Abram
dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain
and pitched his tent even as far as Sodom. [13] But the men
of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the LORD.

Genesis 14:10-12 NKJV
[10] Now the Valley of Siddim was full of asphalt pits; and the
kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled; some fell there, and the
remainder fled to the mountains. [11] Then they took all the
goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and
went their way. [12] They also took Lot, Abram's brother's son
who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

Genesis 19:17-22 NKJV
[17] So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that
he said, "Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere
in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed."
[18] Then Lot said to them, "Please, no, my lords! [19] Indeed now,
your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have increased
your mercy which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot
escape to the mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I die.
[20] See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one;
please let me escape there
(is it not a little one?) and my soul shall
live." [21] And he said to him, "See, I have favored you concerning
this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which you
have spoken. [22] Hurry, escape there. For I cannot do anything
until you arrive there." Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

Genesis 19:30 NKJV
[30] Then Lot went up out of Zoar and dwelt in the mountains, and his
two daughters were with him; for he was afraid to dwell in Zoar. And
he and his two daughters dwelt in a cave.

Poor Lot he had to keep learning the hard way!

He wanted the plains, he got them but they were bad news.
First he got caught up in a war and was taken as the spoils of war. Abraham
had to rescue him. Then he had to flee Sodem and was told to go to the
mountains. He didn’t want to do that and ended up in a city, once again be
got what he wanted. But later he fled to the mountains living in caves after all.

He was looking for comfort, ease of living. He got it but it brought Lot more
hardship. You can just see him thinking “well watered plains far better than the
desert. A city far better to live there than a cave in the mountains!”

Do you think God sometimes let’s us have what we want instead of what
is best for us, so that we learn the hard way that it wasn’t best for us at all?

How do we discern if what we want, is what God wants.
Have you ever got what you wanted, only to find it wasn’t right for you after all.

Yes of course. Remember Israel wanted a (physical) king and He gave it because they persisted even if it wasn't in their best interest.

I know John Bevere has written a book about this recently called Good or God?
I haven't read it yet but it's supposed to be about not necessarily everything we think is 'good' is from God or His will but to learn to discern the difference or something like that.

Remember when Joshua made the covenant with those people who pretended to be from a far land? He paid the price because he didn't seek the Lord on the issue.

I know myself I have to work on that hehe

Solid food is for those who are mature, who through training have the skill to recognize the difference between right and wrong.
Hebrews 5:14 NLT

I can speak from experience that God will absolutely give you what you want even knowing full well it's not good for you. You can't look at the Lord and say give me give me give me and expect a good result.

Some people (myself included) have to learn the hard way. We want what we want because we are naturally selfish people. And sometimes it takes God giving us what we want to teach us and help us learn that his way is better than our way. His plans are far better than our plan.

I am living out the consequences of God allowing me to have something i insisted would be good for me and it's been a really ugly, sad, tough road. With that though, i don't know if i ever would have changed into the person he wanted me to be and continues to change me into that person.
Sometimes it takes the ugly, sad, and tough to put you exactly where he wants you to be.

I hope it works out for you, I’m sure it will God can turn it around. :)

For sure our errors lead us to recognize our carnal nature.
I think this has something to do with our having been made subject to vanity, until we are delivered from our carnal bondages (Romans 8:20-21).

Romans 8:20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

You know as much as I hate it I am one his more stubborn children, even in life before I knew him I always had to learn things the hard way and a lot of times pain or hardship is the outcome. I find that pain is a great teacher

Yes sometimes we can get what we want and what we want is not always good for us.
We don't always get what we want from God either.
The world offers some pretty convincing counterfeits sometimes.
We have to learn.

Yes we do have to learn and maybe one day soon I can stop asking myself when are you going to learn? Like seriously sometimes I just want to beat the lesson into my head yelling are you getting it YET!?

Proverbs 1:24-33, “Because I called and you refused, I have stretched out my hand and no one inclined, And you spurned all my counsel, And would not yield to my reproof, Let me also laugh at your calamity, Mock when your dread comes, When your dread comes like a storm, And your calamity comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you. Let them then call on me, but I answer not; Let them seek me, but not find me. Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of יהוה, They did not accept my counsel, They despised all my reproof, Therefore let them eat the fruit of their own way, And be filled with their own counsels. For the turning away of the simple kills them, And the complacency of fools destroys them. But whoever listens to me dwells safely, And is at ease from the dread of evil.”

I pray: "Give me this day my daily bread". Bread includes everything I need for spiritual, emotional and physical growth. Try to let him choose.

Yet we are told to ask specifically. We do not always know if that is God's will for us. But we do what Jesus did - pray "thy will be done" even after he asked for what he wanted in the garden.

Eventually in our spiritual growth, we get to the point where we can only pray that He be glorified in our life, and let Him choose how that is to be done. We can do this if we truly believe that our needs will be met, along with many pleasures and joys. We do not have to pray for the things that will bring us joy - they just will happen. We are no longer living for ourselves.

Always working on this.
