Some people fast to gain spiritual power and as it says in the Bible "Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife,
and in striking each other with wicked fists"
The Bible tells us not to let people take us captive by asceticism that does not benefit the spirit but only subjugated the body.
"5 Is this the kind of fast I have chosen,
only a day for people to humble themselves?
Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed
and for lying in sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast,
a day acceptable to the Lord?"

Fasting is about training our minds to be over our physical bodies., to not think so much of our physical sensibilities. How many of us give into anger and annoyance or other discomforts both physically and mentally? Exercising self control is a good thing and IMO fasting is one way to do that.
When I was younger I fasted often but not for spiritual reasons. But it actually did help me very much. I didn't think so much about my body but thought more about what was right. It helped me cleanse my body and mind of the need for certain foods I thought I had to have.
Fasting also helped me see that my body is actually trained by me and controlled by me. I don't have to let my body control me but I can control it. And discipline is a fruit of the Spirit. "let this mind be in you...."
So I can see the way fasting is a excellent tool for the Christian. Makes perfect and practical sense.

I believe the subject of fasting is paitience and Trust.

I will read both . Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ thought it was important enough to quote and use as a tool for instruction, as well as the apostles. Both Testaments are one complete history of how God has planed to save us all . One without the other is incomplete.Where else do we find out what The Lamb of God is or means or what is so important about the names mentioned in the the Gospel according to Mathew . What’s up with the patients of Job ? Who is that Abraham that is mentioned so often . What about the folks called the Jews . Why is it important that Jesus was without sin? What is a sin where did this thing called the Law come from ? All answered in the Old Testament.,and also so important why do we need our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ? It’s there too .

Trust
And He said,
"Do not draw near here. Take your shoes off your feet, because the place upon which you stand is holy soil." הוַיֹּ֖אמֶר אַל־תִּקְרַ֣ב הֲלֹ֑ם שַׁל־נְעָלֶ֨יךָ֙ מֵעַ֣ל רַגְלֶ֔יךָ כִּ֣י הַמָּק֗וֹם אֲשֶׁ֤ר אַתָּה֙ עוֹמֵ֣ד עָלָ֔יו אַדְמַת־קֹ֖דֶשׁ הֽוּא:
6And He said,

Trust and patience
Then Job replied and said, אוַיַּ֥עַן אִיּ֗וֹב וַיֹּֽאמַר:
2"Indeed, I know that it is so, but why should a man be righteous with God? באָמְנָם יָדַ֣עְתִּי כִּי־כֵ֑ן וּמַה־יִּצְדַּ֖ק אֱנ֣וֹשׁ עִם־אֵֽל:
3If he would wish to contend with Him He would not answer him one out of a thousand. גאִם־יַ֖חְפֹּץ לָרִ֣יב עִמּ֑וֹ לֹֽא־יַֽ֜עֲנֶ֗נּוּ אַחַ֥ת מִנִּי־אָֽלֶף:
4He is wise in heart and mighty in strength; who hardened [his heart] against Him and remained whole? דחֲכַ֣ם לֵ֖בָב וְאַמִּ֣יץ כֹּ֑חַ מִי־הִקְשָׁ֥ה אֵ֜לָ֗יו וַיִּשְׁלָֽם:

10He Who performs great deeds without limit, and wonders until they have no number יעֹשֶׂ֣ה גְ֖דֹלוֹת עַד־אֵ֣ין חֵ֑קֶר וְנִפְלָא֗וֹת עַד־אֵ֥ין מִסְפָּֽר:
11Behold, He goes by me but I do not see [Him]; and He passes but I do not perceive Him. יאהֵ֚ן יַֽעֲבֹ֣ר עָ֖לַי וְלֹ֣א אֶרְאֶ֑ה וְ֜יַֽחֲלֹ֗ף וְֽלֹא־אָבִ֥ין לֽוֹ:
12Behold, He strikes suddenly, and who can hold Him back; who will say to Him, 'What are You doing?' יבהֵ֣ן יַ֖חְתֹּף מִ֣י יְשִׁיבֶ֑נּוּ מִֽי־יֹאמַ֥ר אֵ֜לָ֗יו מַֽה־תַּֽעֲשֶֽׂה:

After these incidents, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying,
"Fear not, Abram; I am your Shield; your reward is exceedingly great." אאַחַ֣ר | הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֗לֶּה הָיָ֤ה דְבַר־יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־אַבְרָ֔ם בַּמַּֽחֲזֶ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר אַל־תִּירָ֣א אַבְרָ֗ם אָֽנֹכִי֙ מָגֵ֣ן לָ֔ךְ שְׂכָֽרְךָ֖ הַרְבֵּ֥ה מְאֹֽד:

7And He said to him,
"I am the Lord, Who brought you forth from Ur of the Chaldees, to give you this land to inherit it." זוַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֵלָ֑יו אֲנִ֣י יְהֹוָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר הֽוֹצֵאתִ֨יךָ֙ מֵא֣וּר כַּשְׂדִּ֔ים לָ֧תֶת לְךָ֛ אֶת־הָאָ֥רֶץ הַזֹּ֖את לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ:

9And He said to him,

12Now the sun was ready to set, and a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and behold, a fright, a great darkness was falling upon him. יבוַיְהִ֤י הַשֶּׁ֨מֶשׁ֙ לָב֔וֹא וְתַרְדֵּמָ֖ה נָֽפְלָ֣ה עַל־אַבְרָ֑ם וְהִנֵּ֥ה אֵימָ֛ה חֲשֵׁכָ֥ה גְדֹלָ֖ה נֹפֶ֥לֶת עָלָֽיו:
13And He said to Abram,
"You shall surely know that your seed will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and they will enslave them and oppress them, for four hundred years. יגוַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְאַבְרָ֗ם יָדֹ֨עַ תֵּדַ֜ע כִּי־גֵ֣ר | יִֽהְיֶ֣ה זַרְעֲךָ֗ בְּאֶ֨רֶץ֙ לֹ֣א לָהֶ֔ם וַֽעֲבָד֖וּם וְעִנּ֣וּ אֹתָ֑ם אַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָֽה:

20And the Hittites and the Perizzites and the Rephaim, כוְאֶת־הַֽחִתִּ֥י וְאֶת־הַפְּרִזִּ֖י וְאֶת־הָֽרְפָאִֽים:
21And the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Girga****es and the Jebusites." כאוְאֶת־הָֽאֱמֹרִי֙ וְאֶת־הַכְּנַֽעֲנִ֔י וְאֶת־הַגִּרְגָּשִׁ֖י וְאֶת־הַיְבוּסִֽי:

Trust
And He said,
"Do not draw near here. Take your shoes off your feet, because the place upon which you stand is holy soil." הוַיֹּ֖אמֶר אַל־תִּקְרַ֣ב הֲלֹ֑ם שַׁל־נְעָלֶ֨יךָ֙ מֵעַ֣ל רַגְלֶ֔יךָ כִּ֣י הַמָּק֗וֹם אֲשֶׁ֤ר אַתָּה֙ עוֹמֵ֣ד עָלָ֔יו אַדְמַת־קֹ֖דֶשׁ הֽוּא:
6And He said,
"I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." 2"Indeed, I know that it is so, but why should a man be righteous with God? באָמְנָם יָדַ֣עְתִּי כִּי־כֵ֑ן וּמַה־יִּצְדַּ֖ק אֱנ֣וֹשׁ עִם־אֵֽל:

I love the book of Job...there are so many lesson here. One is, it is dangerous to be conscious of submission to a spiritual power. The difference between fatalism and faith lies just here. Fatalism means, “My number’s up; I have to bow to the power whether I like it or not; I do not know the character of the power, but it is greater than I am, and I must submit.”
The submission of faith is that I do know the character of the power, and this was the line Job took - “though He slay me, yet I will trust the fact that His character is worthy.” This is the attitude of my faith all through - “I submit to One whose character I know but whose ways are obscured in mystery just now.”
We do know the character of God, if we are Christians, because we have it revealed to us in Jesus Christ - “He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father.” Anything that contradicts the manifestation given in and through the Lord Jesus Christ cannot be true of God.
Therefore we know that the character of God is noble and true and right, and any authority from God is based, not on un-meshed dictatorship or mere blind power, but on worthiness which everything in me recognizes as worthy, therefore I submit.
Elihu was moved with indignation because Job said, “I cannot submit to the fact that God has decreed such things as you say; you must give me room to say that your creedal exposition of God is wrong. By your creed you prove me to be wrong where I know I am right; therefore if the facts I do know are disproved by you, how can I accept your explanation of the facts I do not know?” This foundation in the Character and person of Christ Jesus in connection to God and myself relationally excites me.....because it is my experience as well to know to know my Father thru Jesus Christ, despite me not knowing all He knows...Smile.

Elihu was moved with indignation because Job said, “I cannot submit to the fact that God has decreed such things as you say; you must give me room to say that your creedal exposition of God is wrong. By your creed you prove me to be wrong where I know I am right; therefore if the facts I do know are disproved by you, how can I accept your explanation of the facts I do not know?” This foundation in the Character and person of Christ Jesus in connection to God and myself relationally excites me.....because it is my experience as well to know to know my Father thru Jesus Christ, despite me not knowing all He knows...Smile.

I wonder if the patience of the Saints during their great tribulation Revlation 13, is comparable to the patience of Job?
