They required a sign before they would commit faith . Christ said no sign would be given other than the sign of Jonas . The veil is rent . The time of refomation is here . They simply deny the sign (the veil is rent) showing they are the antichrists .

Christ says its an evil generation that walks by sight looking for signs to believe after. No such sign will be given

John 4:48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

Because they thought they were closer to God based on their own work and superior understanding of the 10 commandments.

The Lord Jesus showed them that they were whitewashed tombs. They looked 'righteous' to common people but inwardly they were just as lost and dead as the common people who thought they were righteous.

Plus, there was the authority that comes from God. The pharisees thought they had it. But the Lord Jesus showed them lots of times that they didn't.

Pharisees don't like that.

I would like to get some specific responses as to why the Pharisees hated Christ so much.
Jesus challenged their religious authority and traditions. See Matthew chapter 23:

Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,

[SUP]2 [/SUP]
“The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat,

[SUP]3 [/SUP]so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.

[SUP]4 [/SUP]They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger.

[SUP]5 [/SUP]They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long,

[SUP]6 [/SUP]and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues

[SUP]7 [/SUP]and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others.

[SUP]8 [/SUP]But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers.

[SUP]9 [/SUP]And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven.

[SUP]10 [/SUP]Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ.

[SUP]11 [/SUP]The greatest among you shall be your servant.

[SUP]12 [/SUP]Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

[SUP]
13 [/SUP]“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people's faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in.

[SUP]15 [/SUP]Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.

[SUP]16 [/SUP]“Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’

[SUP]17 [/SUP]You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred? [SUP]18

[/SUP]And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’

[SUP]19 [/SUP]You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?

[SUP]20 [/SUP]So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.

[SUP]21 [/SUP]And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it.

[SUP]22 [/SUP]And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.

[SUP]
23 [/SUP]“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.

[SUP]24 [/SUP]You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!

[SUP]
25 [/SUP]“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.

[SUP]26 [/SUP]You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean.

[SUP]
27 [/SUP]“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanness.

[SUP]28 [/SUP]So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

[SUP]
29 [/SUP]“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous,

[SUP]30 [/SUP]saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’

[SUP]31 [/SUP]Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.

[SUP]32 [/SUP]Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.

[SUP]33 [/SUP]You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?

[SUP]34 [/SUP]Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town,

[SUP]35 [/SUP]so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.

[SUP]36 [/SUP]Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

[SUP]37 [/SUP]“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

[SUP]38 [/SUP]See, your house is left to you desolate.

[SUP]39 [/SUP]For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

Jesus exposed their hypocrisy with some pretty harsh language and warned them of their condemnation! (Matthew 23:2-33)

Yes, they did ask for a sign, but that is hardly a reason for their intense hatred towards the Lord.

True, that the Pharisees felt themselves superior, and the Lord was contradicting their self righteous perspective of themselves, but that is hardly enough reason for their intense hatred of Christ to the point of their having Him crucified by the Romans.

Yes, Christ pointed out their errors, and they hated Him for it, but was this enough for them to get the Romans to crucify Him?

Christ's death was the ultimate payment for our sins. They had Him killed because they did not believe he was the true Messiah and that He spoke nothing but blasphemy. It was a very very dark time during Jesus's time, as it is now.

Why did the Pharisees hate Christ?
Not all the Pharisees hated Christ. But it's clear that the chief priests did.

I suspect at least part of the problem was that the chief priests grew to love their positions of power and wealth, and viewed the Temple as a means of commerce rather than worship. Some churches today, and the clergy therein, are not immune from this.

One of the reasons I think this about the chief priests is because even after all the events that transpired at the time of Jesus' crucifixion, and after Jesus arose from death, the chief priests bribed the guards to lie about Jesus body being stolen.

Imagine how different the world would be today if the chief priests had believed? Wow!

The pharisees claimed Jesus claimed to be God. "We are not stoning you for any good work," they replied, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God." They also plotted to kill Jesus because He healed a man on the Sabbath.

There are two places in John where the Jews wanted to kill Jesus. Both of these occur after Jesus spoke and made a claim about Himself to be GOD. The first was in John 8:58-59, and the second was in John 10:30-33.

So between exposing their hypocrisy and self righteousness with harsh words of condemnation and the claim that Jesus made about Himself (which is true - Jesus is God) that the Pharisees considered to be blasphemy, that was enough for them to get the Romans to crucify Him. Jesus was a threat to their religious system, their way of life and their power and prestige.

They were law centered.
Jesus broke their law.
He also was extremely ugly to them.
He also said blasphèmous things.
Of course it was true in a sense, but Jesus came to change things.
They never knew the God they represented was standing right in front of them.

Their sin is also our sin.
We have some of them in us.

Lord remove it in Jesus name!!!

Pretty simple really. Our Lord Jesus Christ exposed their self-righteousness and hypocrisy.
Everyone seems to have this same answer, and yes it's true that the Pharisees and scribes hated the Lord for having exposed them for what they really were, but this is not the reason they had Christ killed.
Scriptures is fairly clear, that these individuals reasoned among themselves that Christ was the heir and so decided to kill him, so that they could keep the kingdom (the status quo) for themselves (Matthew 21:38; Mark 12:7; Luke 20:14).
In effect, they were afraid the heir Christ would take the kingdom from them, and they would lose their positions, and thus hated Christ to the point of their having Him murdered.

Matthew 21:38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.

Mark 12:7 But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours.'

Luke 20:
14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

Here is some different Scriptural perspectives as well:

Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier. Also if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not win the prize unless he competes according to the rules. (2 Timothy 2:3-5).

"He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad." (Matthew 12:30).

"...and do not give the devil a foothold." (Ephesians 4:27).

"...whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." (James 4:3-5).

And he said, " 'Go, and say to this people: Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.' Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed....."

(God punished His Jewish community; whom He loved for a time as well).

Ultimately this is Spiritual warfare of Satan attacking thru men God in human form, by using religious men to cover his
tracks. Not holy men but religious men.

They were religious and Jesus was about to put them out of work.
