Why did the Pharisees hate Christ?

They required a sign before they would commit faith . Christ said no sign would be given other than the sign of Jonas . The veil is rent . The time of refomation is here . They simply deny the sign (the veil is rent) showing they are the antichrists .
Christ says its an evil generation that walks by sight looking for signs to believe after. No such sign will be given

Because they thought they were closer to God based on their own work and superior understanding of the 10 commandments.
The Lord Jesus showed them that they were whitewashed tombs. They looked 'righteous' to common people but inwardly they were just as lost and dead as the common people who thought they were righteous.
Plus, there was the authority that comes from God. The pharisees thought they had it. But the Lord Jesus showed them lots of times that they didn't.
Pharisees don't like that.
The Lord Jesus showed them that they were whitewashed tombs. They looked 'righteous' to common people but inwardly they were just as lost and dead as the common people who thought they were righteous.

Pharisees don't like that.
Jesus challenged their religious authority and traditions. See Matthew chapter 23:

Not all the Pharisees hated Christ. But it's clear that the chief priests did.
I suspect at least part of the problem was that the chief priests grew to love their positions of power and wealth, and viewed the Temple as a means of commerce rather than worship. Some churches today, and the clergy therein, are not immune from this.
One of the reasons I think this about the chief priests is because even after all the events that transpired at the time of Jesus' crucifixion, and after Jesus arose from death, the chief priests bribed the guards to lie about Jesus body being stolen.
Imagine how different the world would be today if the chief priests had believed? Wow!

There are two places in John where the Jews wanted to kill Jesus. Both of these occur after Jesus spoke and made a claim about Himself to be GOD. The first was in John 8:58-59, and the second was in John 10:30-33.
So between exposing their hypocrisy and self righteousness with harsh words of condemnation and the claim that Jesus made about Himself (which is true - Jesus is God) that the Pharisees considered to be blasphemy, that was enough for them to get the Romans to crucify Him. Jesus was a threat to their religious system, their way of life and their power and prestige.

They were law centered.
Jesus broke their law.
He also was extremely ugly to them.
He also said blasphèmous things.
Of course it was true in a sense,but Jesus came to change things.
They never knew the God they represented was standing right in front of them.
Their sin is also our sin.

Everyone seems to have this same answer, and yes it's true that the Pharisees and scribes hated the Lord for having exposed them for what they really were, but this is not the reason they had Christ killed.
Scriptures is fairly clear, that these individuals reasoned among themselves that Christ was the heir and so decided to kill him, so that they could keep the kingdom (the status quo) for themselves (Matthew 21:38; Mark 12:7; Luke 20:14).
In effect, they were afraid the heir Christ would take the kingdom from them, and they would lose their positions, and thus hated Christ to the point of their having Him murdered.
Matthew 21:38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.
Mark 12:7 But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours.'

Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier. Also if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not win the prize unless he competes according to the rules. (2 Timothy 2:3-5).
"He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad." (Matthew 12:30).
"...and do not give the devil a foothold." (Ephesians 4:27).
"...whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." (James 4:3-5).
And he said, " 'Go, and say to this people: Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.' Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed....."
(God punished His Jewish community; whom He loved for a time as well).
Ultimately this is Spiritual warfare of Satan attacking thru men God in human form, by using religious men to cover his tracks. Not holy men but religious men.
