It based on your view of God's attributes. If you believe He knows all things and when He saves He saves to the fullest, in other words He forgives your sins past, present and future. In that salvation He gives those He forgives eternal life, not the possibility to have eternal life IF you work for it the right way.

You have to have a low view of God, His attributes with a high view of man and his ability to save himself.
