I disagree, The NT focuses on how God saved us (the gospel) and what we do with this salvation.

the point is, we recieve his love, using this love which overflows as a means to be love others,

focusing on obedience is not good. we need to focus on christ, and use his power to love others. In this and ONLY in this way, will obedience happen
I have already said that only IN CHRIST can we achieve what God requires of us...and it includes obedience which is quite important to Him Heb 5v8, 9 !

I am not arguing against obedience,

I am trying to share how I understand we become obedient.

Not through the law. But through Grace and learning to love as God overflows us with his love.

ok...as I see it...God's Commandments are His Will - and NOT doing His Will will keep us out of the Kingdom...says Jesus.

I am not saying we keep them according to 'letter as in the OT but how Jesus teaches them in the NT...tempered with love, patience, mercy, compassion, grace, forgiveness...giving us time to learn to do the Father's Will...since loving God and neighbour are God's basic Principles for a happy successful eternal RElationship.

The Spirit of Christ HELPS us to attain to it and there will never be another way ! Remember, Jesus learnt obedience, humbled Himself and was obedient unto death...our perfect example !

You can obey all ten to the letter on any particular day, yet still sin, (and again, the point jesus was making in his sermon on the mount)

The law was given to expose our sin, and do what? Lead us to obedience? or lead us to christ.

why is it important that the law lead us to christ? And how did Jesus say we fulfilled the law and prophets? By the ten commands?

Jesus fulfilled all the law. Unless you think there is more He could do? Not.
We live under Grace now and follow God's laws out of thanks.

James 4:17
Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.

WHAT IS SIN?

James 2
8, If ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well:
9, But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
10, For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, YOU ARE BECOME A TRANSGRESSOR OF GOD'S LAW

James is pretty clear if we brake ANY of God's Law (10 commandments) then we are a TRANSGRESSOR of God's LAW

links to...........

1 John 3
4 Whosoever commits SIN transgresses also the law: for SIN is the transgression of the law.
John is in agreement with James and states that if we TRANSGRESS God's LAW then we commit SIN because SIN IS THE TRANSGRESSION OF GOD'S LAW. So it is very clear that SIN is breaking ANY of God's LAW (10 commandments)
Links to...........

Romans 7

7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known SIN, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

Well here we have Paul in agreement with James and John also telling us that SIN is breaking God's commandments and uses the 10th commandment as an example of breaking any of God's LAW (10 commandments) = SIN (Exodus 20:17)

Links to............

Romans 3

20, Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: FOR BY THE LAW IS THE KNOWLEDGE OF SIN.
Once again Paul is in agreement with John and James which all agree together that if we break any of God's LAW (10 commandments) we commit SIN because as James, John and Paul all agree together that SIN is breaking ANY of God's 10 commandments.

SIN is the transgression of ANY of God's 10 Commandments. Those who CONTINUE in KNOWN SIN will NOT enter in to God's KINGDOM

............

In times of ignorance God winks at but now ,<when a KNOWLEDGE of the truth has come> calls all men everywhere to REPENT (FOLLOW) (Acts 17:30-31).

There is not one scripture in all of God's Word that says that God's 4th Commandment is now ABOLISHED and we are now commanded to KEEP Sunday as a Holy day.

God's 4th commandment is one of the ten (Exodus 20:8-11) If we knowingly break it when God asks us not to we stand guilty before God of committing sin (James 2:8-12). If we do not seek him in repentance and forgiveness we are in danger of the Judgement (Hebrews 10:26-27)

Sunday worship is a tradition and teaching of man that has lead many to break the commandments of God. Jesus says that if we follow the traditions of man that break the commandments of God we are not following God (Matthew 15:3-9)

Who should we follow the teachings and traditions of men or the Word of God? Who should we believe the Words of men or the Word of God?

May God bless you as you seek him through His Word.

The example was perfect, becasue it accomplished / "it is finished" all obligations.
We continue to follow the law out of gratitude.

Jesus fulfilling God's LAW is not an invitation for us to break it. Those who KNOWINGLY brake God's LAW commit sin. Those who practice SIN will not see God's KINGDOM unless they REPENT and seek God in forgiveness for SIN.

If I kill you but do not murder you is it sin? If I hate you but nice to your face is it sin? Does what takes place in the mind equal sin? WHAT IS SIN? Is it an action, or a word, or a thought... or is it all the the above? Or did I just not murder tonight but under my breath I called you very bad names... so I am all good? How do you think humans see sin and how do you think G-d does? Do we have different barometers to sin?
Sin is a willful choice a person makes to ignore what the Holy Spirit told them not to do.

And perhaps sometimes a thought. Mathew 5:28
This is the Best definition of the sin cycle found in the Bible.

James 1:131-6

[SUP]13 [/SUP]Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. [SUP]14 [/SUP]But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. [SUP]15 [/SUP]Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. [SUP]16 [/SUP]Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.

Yes true ! but let's start simple...the 10 Coms are a general guide to 'love God and neighbour....yes or no ?
The 10 commandments are fulfilled in the Law of Christ, which is love God, love your neighbor and love yourself. ~Romans 13:8-10~

The first 5 of the 10 tell us how to love God.

The 2nd 5 of the 10 tell us how to love our neighbor.

It begins in the heart, and can be stopped if you will it to stop. But if you go through with it to the end, it brings death according to these words by James. this kind of sin sounds premeditated. Is he talking about sin in general or sin as turning away from God.? If that be the case, then it's goodnight, and goodbye for nearly all of us.

WHAT IS SIN?
So it is very clear that SIN is breaking ANY of God's LAW (10 commandments)
Far more specific than that:

“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’
But I say to you
that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

Here Jesus explains, way past the ten commandments, that thinking what you know is wrong to be thinking is sin.

Those who do not transgress the the law in their head and heart, are not subject to it.

12All who sin apart from the Law will also perish apart from the Law, and all who sin under the Law will be judged by the Law.

Funny. I still have those catechism questions that my mum drilled so carefully into my head firmly in place. I may not realize they're there, but when someone asks the question (in the proper wording), it is like pressing a button...the response is automatic.

According to the Westminster divines, "sin is any wont of conformity unto or transgression of the law of God."

In modern words, any time you don't mold your life perfectly to God's law, and when you go against it.

Action, word, thought, all of that stuff is sinful if not conformed to God's law.

God's measurement of sin is often VERY different from the human measurement; but in the end, the human measurement isn't going to matter. We'll all see God's measurement as just and right.

Ignoring the instructions given to you by somebody who had authority over you. It requires them to do a correction that is never pleasant.

Heb:12:4-13:
Ye have not yet resisted unto blood,
striving against sin.
And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children,
My son,
despise not thou the chastening of the Lord,
nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth,
and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
If ye endure chastening,
God dealeth with you as with sons;
for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
But if ye be without chastisement,
whereof all are partakers,
then are ye bastards,
and not sons.
Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us,
and we gave them reverence:
shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits,
and live?
For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure;
but he for our profit,
that we might be partakers of his holiness.
Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous,
but grievous:
nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down,
and the feeble knees;
And make straight paths for your feet,
lest that which is lame be turned out of the way;
but let it rather be healed.

Those who do not transgress the the law in their head and heart, are not subject to it.

12All who sin apart from the Law will also perish apart from the Law, and all who sin under the Law will be judged by the Law.
What Jesus is saying is that the ORIGIN of SIN and that SIN originates in the HEART (thoughts and feelings) and that we need a NEW HEART to LOVE and OBEY God and need to be BORN AGAIN.

1 John 3
3,
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4, He that said, I know him, and keeps not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

God's promise in the NEW COVENANT is a NEW HEART TO LOVE GOD and MAN...

Hebrews 8
10,
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, said the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people

SALVATION is FROM SIN not IN SIN. IF you continue in KNOWN SIN you will be LOST.

GOD'S LAW written on the heart to LOVE is the ONLY way you can FOLLOW him who calls you in LOVE to LOVE ANOTHER.

LOVE IS THE FULFILLLING (Doing) of GOD'S LAW in those who BELIEVE the promises of God's WORD...

Romans 13
8,
Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loves another has fulfilled the law.
9, For this, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, You shall not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
10, Love works no ill to his neighbor: therefore love is the fulfilling (Doing) of the law.

Romans 3
31,
Do we then make void the law through FAITH? GOD FORBID: YES, WE ESTABLISH THE LAW.

SIN is the breaking of God's Commandments. If we CONTINUE TO KNOWINGLY Break God's LAW we will NOT Enter the KINGDOM of HEAVEN.

..............

May God bless you as you seek him through His Word.

The difference between killing and murder is killing is taking life with God’s permission (such as police, judges, and armies), murder is taking life without God’s permission. Two things determine what sin is- the most important being God’s Word- if He says it is sin, it is sin. Also your own personal conscience as a compliment to the Bible. Jesus says if you look at someone to lust after them that you are just as guilty as physically commiting adultery. Jesus says if you hate your brother you are already guilty of murder. So yes, in your heart (mind) does matter.

James 4:17

if you have been reading, I posted that verse above. As for the rest of your post. Not sure what you mean. We do not follow God out of thanks, we follow him because we trust him (faith) and because he has empowered us to love others. Love fulfills the law. Not following rules and regulation. That never worked. Never has, never will
