My aunt was saved without reading the bible.

When her dad died the 23rd Psalm was read at the graveside. At that moment she was saved and
knew God was real.

The words were so real to her that she kept looking around the graveyard expecting to see
Jesus turn up. Or that she would be struck dead and go to heaven!

She calls it her road to Demascus experience.

That weekend she knew she had to go to church but didn’t know which one. There were
3 churches in the area. A Catholic Church just 5 mins away, a Methodist church maybe 15 mins
away and an evangelical church 20 mins away.

She knew nothing about the different denominations but felt that she had to go to the
evangelical church. She had no idea why.

For the next 6 months she went to church every Sunday and cried her eyes out at every service!
Every word she heard went deep into her heart.

The easiest way to be deceived is to have a religion not based in what is written in the authentic words of YHWH.

The easiest way to know what is correct is to search His words.

Mat 4:4, “But He answering, said, “It has been written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of יהוה.” (Deut 8:3)

Proverbs 1:28-29, "“Let them then call on me, but I answer not; Let them seek me, but not find me. Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of יהוה,"

Hosea 4:6, “My people have perished for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being priest for Me. Since you have forgotten the Instructions of your Mighty One, I also forget your children."

Daniel 10:10-12, “And see, a hand touched me, and set me trembling on my knees and on the palms of my hands. And he said to me, “O Dani’yl, man greatly appreciated, understand the words that I speak to you, and stand upright, for I have now been sent to you.” And while he was speaking this word to me, I stood trembling. And he said to me, “Do not fear, Dani’yl, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and to humble yourself before your Mighty One, your words were heard, and I have come because of your words.”

Isaiah 34:16, “Search from the book of יהוה, and read: not one of these shall be missing, not one shall be without a mate, for He has commanded my mouth. And His Spirit shall gather them.”

Psalm 119:9, “How would a young man cleanse his path? To guard it according to Your word.”

Psalm 119:11, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

Deuteronomy 30:11-13, “For this Law which I command you this day is not hidden from you, nor is it beyond your reach. It is not up in heaven, so that you have to ask; Who will ascend up into heaven for us, and bring it to us, so that we may hear it and then do it? Nor is it beyond the sea, so that you have to ask; Who will cross the sea, and bring it to us, so that we may hear it and then do it?”

Deuteronomy 6:5-9, “And you shall love יהוה your Strength with all your heart, and with all your being, and with all your might. And these Words which I am commanding you today shall be in your heart, and you shall impress them upon your children, and shall speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up, and shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

Psalm 1, “Blessed is the man who shall not walk in the counsel of the wrong, And shall not stand in the path of sinners, And shall not sit in the seat of scoffers, But his delight is in the Torah of יהוה, And he meditates in His Torah day and night. For he shall be as a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That yields its fruit in its season, And whose leaf does not wither, And whatever he does prospers. The wrong are not so, But are like the chaff which the wind blows away. Therefore the wrong shall not rise in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For יהוה knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the wrong comes to naught.”

Psalm 119:97-104, “O how I love Your Torah! It is my study all day long. Your commands make me wiser than my enemies; For it is ever before me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, For Your witnesses are my study. I understand more than the aged, For I have observed Your orders. I have restrained my feet from every evil way, That I might guard Your word. I have not turned aside from Your right-rulings, For You Yourself have taught me. How sweet to my taste has Your word been, More than honey to my mouth! From Your orders I get understanding; Therefore I have hated every false way.”

Joshua 1:8-9, “Do not let this Book of the Torah depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you guard to do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and act wisely. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, nor be discouraged, for יהוה your Strength is with you wherever you go.”

Psalms 119:172, "My tongue sings of Your word, For all Your commands are righteousness."

John 4:24, “Yah is Spirit, and those who worship Him need to worship in spirit and truth.”

John 17:17, “Set them apart in Your truth – Your Word is truth.”

Psalm 119:142, “Your righteousness is righteousness forever, And Your Torah is truth.”

[FONT=Times New Roman, serif]Hebrews 4:12-13, “For the Word of Yah is living, and working, and sharper than any two-edged sword, cutting through even to the dividing of being and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all are naked and laid bare before the eyes of Him with whom is our account.”[/FONT]

[FONT=Times New Roman, serif]Revelation 19:11-16, “And I saw the heaven opened, and there was a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Trustworthy and True, and in righteousness He judges and fights. And His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns, having a Name that had been written, which no one had perceived except Himself – and having been dressed in a robe dipped in blood (Isaiah 63:2) and His Name is called: The Word of [/FONT][FONT=Times New Roman, serif]יהוה[/FONT][FONT=Times New Roman, serif]. And the armies in the heaven, dressed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. And out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations. And He shall shepherd them with a rod of iron. And He treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of the Almighty Strength. And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written: SOVEREIGN OF SOVEREIGNS AND MASTER OF MASTERS.”[/FONT]

how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?
(Romans 10:14)

it's in the Bible that we read of Him - out of it that we hear of Him, whether be reading or by having someone tell us of Him.

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
(John 5:39)

all of this word testifies of Him; through it we learn of Him, and find knowledge and understanding of Him

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
(John 17:3)

to know Him is life.
the scripture testifies of Him, through it we hear of Him, by believing in Him we receive the Spirit, who opens our minds to it and teaches us of Him. by it we receive knowledge of Him, and knowing Him is life

can you know of Him apart from scripture?
sure
but isn't obviously for our benefit that we have it? and the benefit is in searching for Him in it, and finding knowledge of Him there

Was the bible available when Jesus was alive? If it was I apologize I still havent finished the bible
Scriptures certainly were :) Jesus read from them in the temple,
following His temptation in the desert. See Luke, chapter 4:

[SUP]16 [/SUP]He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up: and, as His custom
was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

[SUP]17 [/SUP]And there was delivered unto Him the book of the prophet Esaias. And
when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written,

[SUP]18 [/SUP]The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

[SUP]19 [/SUP]To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

[SUP]20 [/SUP]And He closed the book, and He gave it again to the minister, and sat down.
And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on Him.

[SUP]21 [/SUP]And He began to say unto them,
This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

[SUP]22 [/SUP]And all bare Him witness, and wondered at the
gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth.

[h=1](Deuteronomy 8:3): ...The Voice (VOICE)[/h]3 He humbled you by making you hungry when there was no food in the desert. Then He fed you with manna, a food you and your ancestors had never heard of. He did this because He wanted you to understand that what makes you truly alive is not the bread you eat but following every word that comes from the mouth of Jesus Christ.

I love this section in Luke. The words Jesus quoted are found in Isaiah 61. At the time Jesus read from Isaiah, what He had available to read from was a scroll (not a bound book like we have today with chapters, verses, pages numbers).

Jesus "found" the place where the words were written. He didn't ask anyone where they were and it didn’t take Him very long to find the place He wanted to read from ... He knew exactly where the words were on the scroll and He located them and read them to the people.

Also, if we go back to Isaiah and read the section Jesus recited in Luke, we'll notice He left out part of what was written in Isaiah:

Isaiah 61:

1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

Jesus did not finish reading Isaiah 61:2. He left off the words and the day of vengeance of our God.

Jesus not only showed His complete familiarity with Scripture, He rightly-divided (2 Tim 2:15) what was written. The day of vengeance of our God is still future. Jesus stopped at the words to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.

that was His ministry ... to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.

Jesus is our example. He studied God's Word and He knew it from memory. We are to follow His example. We are to study to shew [ourselves] approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Tim 2:15).

So, yes, the Bible is important for salvation. 1 Corinthians 1:21 tells us it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. Someone took the time to study God's Word and share it with me. God has chosen the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

Finaldesire, look at it this way, if your life has been saved there is no point in starving yourself afterwards. The Bible is spiritual food. It helps you to get to know The Lord, his plans and thoughts.

Can you be saved by hearing and accepting the gospel without ever reading the bible?
Of course

If faith in Jesus is the only way to salvation, then it's not the bible that really saves me.
True - you can walk with the spirit only, but for arguing over doctrine you need the bible..:p

Why would the Most High leave His words for us if we didn't need it?

What is the gospel? Is it simply Jesus died? or is it what He taught?

Can I do a Billy "Sunday" altar call (say I give my life to Jesus and accept Him) and my ticket to heaven is stamped forever?

Does it matter what I do in life once I accept the Messiah? Or is giving my life to Him lip service?

Is the need to actually do what He said motivation to fall away? or to actually seek to do what He said?

Whether the WORD of GOD Is heard by voice or read It's still GOD's truth.
GOD loved the world so much that HE gave HIS only begotten SON that whosoever BELIEVES In HIM should not perish but have eternal life.

So you see the Issue Is faith now for man.

To be honest ive only read Genesis and Eccleseasties in OT and skipped right to NT for one its shorter and honestly Jesus is much easier to understand. God did a lot in the OT that I dont currently understand but I pray I do one day. I also understand we are not meant to fully understand God and are simply called to love and obey

Even the Apostles didn't understand the Old testament until Jesus opened their understanding after his resurrection.

We need the Holy spirit to help us understand. Otherwise it's veiled and for a good reason.

[FONT=Times New Roman, serif]1 John 2:5, “But whoever guards His Word, truly the love of YHWH has been perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.”

We can test what is in our heart ny His word. If it matches His words, then it is from Him, if it does not it is not from Him.

What is love other than what He says it is? Our own made up version?

I am so grateful to God, that when he saved me and revealed himself to me, he told me “Read the Bible, it is my Word.” This was a command, directly given to me by the Holy Spirit, because I had hardly read the Bible, nor did I understand what it meant, before I was saved.

So, the next day I started reading the Bible every day. Three chapters of the OT and one of the NT. That got me through the Bible in a year. Plus, I read it in French, which I was very good at, having almost finished a translation certificate in French, at that time. In seminary, when I took, OT survey, I read the book we were studying over and over - in different translations, and always a read straight through. Which was hard in the prophets, I admit. (I now read 3 OT and 3 NT and 1 psalm - it is easier, because I do not have to stop and try to figure things out. Although sometimes I have to stop and pray, or stop and write down what God is saying through the Word and the Holy Ghost!)

So now, I have read the Bible over 50 times, including the NT in Greek, and many books in the OT in Hebrew. I am reading the NT in German right now. I am not sure how that is working, because I do know the Bible in English so well, and have memorized so much. Sometimes I am reading and there are words I don’t know. I should look them up, instead I just think of the verses in English, and I know what it says. Or maybe that is a good thing?

When I first read the Bible, ten or twenty times, there was LOTS I didn’t understand. I would pray God would reveal to me wahat it meant. Seminary solved a lot of those issues, particularly how to read and do hermeneutics. Learning not to read verses in isolation is essential to understanding the Bible. Also, learning to study, to use various tools and helps were important. And the most important thing was learning discernment. To hear the Holy Spirit, and to recognize what God is saying through the Holy Spirit.

I believe Arial said we need to read the Bible under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. God really worked with me on that! So, do I still learn things when I read the Bible? Every single day, the Holy Spirit illuminates something in a new way, or shows me a different aspect, or especially an application.

The Bible is my food. I spent 2 years not reading the Bible after I got sick and condemned by Word Faith people because I was not healed. Even through that, God called me back, told me to read 5 psalms a day. I did that for over 2 years. That is through the psalms once a month. Over 24 straight read-though the psalms (I highly recommend the psalms if you are struggling with anything in life!)

God does teach us, encourage us and transform us through the Word. As for salvation, certainly the Word and the gospel must be heard or read. But, the Holy Spirit is the one who really opens our hearts and mind, and is the one who makes us born from above. The Holy Spirit and the Bible go hand in hand. We cannot do without one or the other!

Where do you think the Gospel is found? There would be no Gospel if there was no Bible. The Gospel -- also called "the Word of God" -- is "the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth" (Rom 1:16 KJB). Of course only God can save a soul, but He demands obedience to the Gospel in order to save sinners.
As for salvation, certainly the Word and the gospel must be heard or read. But, the Holy Spirit is the one who really opens our hearts and mind, and is the one who makes us born from above. The Holy Spirit and the Bible go hand in hand. We cannot do without one or the other!

The Holy Spirit speaks to all hearts directly. Scripture is not required reading, according to scripture.

19For what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.
20For since the creation of the world
God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen,
being understood from His workmanship,
so that men are without excuse.

Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God......how shall they hear except one be sent?
