Technical note - the verse in John is about past.

Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me
Interesting John 3:16?

[h=1] [/h]I'm not sure Scripture puts it in quite this way. If God has degrees of love, then He loves His "Beloved Son" supremely, after that the children of God ("the sons of God"), and after that the world (those not saved). But there is no question that God loves us and the evidence is that He sent His only begotten Son into the world to become the propitiation for our sins.

Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. (1 John 4:10).

Some days I believe he loves us more because He hasn't asked us to die in the cross for sinners who hate us....or does he?

Does God loves us more than we love ourselves? Does he love us more than he loves himself?

All we can say is that GOD IS LOVE. We are not called to fathom His love but to put love into ACTION.

No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. (1 John 4:12).

16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

17
But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

18
My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. (1 John 3:16-18)

John 17:23
23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
KJV

This is the aorist active indicative; which is normally translated as our simple past tense; however, there is a special use of the aorist, which continuous action outside of time. I believe that usage is operative here!

Matt 3:17
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
KJV

Here is an example of the aorist being used the same way.

If, indeed the aorist in Jn 17:23 does signify continuous action outside of time, then the English present perfect is indeed the best translation.
