I'm curious... does sanctification lead to a cessation of sin? Is it possible for us to stop sinning?

While I have stopped pornography and masturbation myself... I have stopped sinning obviously, but I'm worried I'm still sinning in ways I haven't thought of yet.

So... my question is... is it possible for us to STOP sinning, with the help of God's spirit?

Thanks! :)
I have done a study on this and here is what I have found in scripture regarding this issue.
From all of these scriptures, it seems clear that God's desire is for His children to stop sinning.
Genesis 4:7 (NIV)[SUP]7 [/SUP]If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”
John 5:14 (NIV) 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”
John 8:11 “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

1 John 3:6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
1 John 3:9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.

Psalm 1 Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, 2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.
Romans 6:1-2 (NIV) 6 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?
Romans 6:12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in the lusts thereof.
Romans 6:14 (NIV) 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.
Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
Romans 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
1 John 2:1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you WILL NOT SIN. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
Hebrews 10:26 (NIV)[SUP]26 [/SUP]IF we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, [SUP]27 [/SUP]but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.

Thanks guys. So I guess the answer is: Not in this body, not in this life. In that case, I have to figure out how I'm sinning next, and with God's spirit, try to overcome! :)
The answer is no yet yes,because... No under our own thoughts and actions we can't stop sinning,yet...
Yes when the holy spirit has us do something we "don't sin" during that time, the best answer to have "the least sin" is to let the holy spirit guide you when you so want to "do right" and have a time of "no sin".

Nice to see someone who reads God's Word. Can we do it without him? All we can do without him is SIN.

With him we can do all things because he strenthens us and when he bids us come we will walk on water. It is his work in those who BELIEVE in the POWER of CREATION.

If the Son of man shall set you free you shall be free indeed. God's POWER to stop sin is in those who BELIEVE.

Remove the law and I'll stop sinning :)..... But until then, No; "I fought the law and the law won". Anyone who claims they stopped sinning has a very bad sense of judgement or an artificially high opinion of themselves. Of course we can stop committing certain sins and repent, but tomorrows another day. Our best shot is to be washed from sin, because billions of people over thousands of years have demonstrated that no one can stop (save one).

Hello GNP,

Me? No all I can do without Jesus is SIN. I am only the chiefest of SInners without Jesus. I thank God that Gos sent his son to save me from my sins. Without Jesus I am lost. I believe God's WORD that I have a Saviour.

Those who CONTINUE in KNOWN UNREPENTANT SIN will NOT enter into the KINGDOM of HEAVEN because they reject the GIFT of God's dear son.

Yes, it is possible but we have to know what SIN means.

Actions/deeds & thoughts are not by themselves SIN (deliberately using singular) but manifestations of SIN- yes we can generally call them sins but Sin is deeper than the superficial look.

Sin is a spirit/mind which is part of everything else that is not God. We can simplify it in an equation: SIN=LIE=Death also generally symbolized as darkness/nakedness. God is the opposite of these. God=Truth=life also generally symbolized as light.
Only God is eternal, every other thing that was created cannot have the same attribute as God, otherwise God would have created God (an impossibility). So it is by design that everything else perishes. It is said that when sin entered the world, death was introduced (death here applies to living things but more so to humans because they have a mind/spirit). Sin also causes other things to perish including nonliving things but God is interested in humans because He loves them and considers them as the world.

Look at it this way, God is light and every creation is darkness, but God loves humans (part of the darkness) so He wants to bring them to Himself so that they are part of Him and live forever (The concept of Father & son)
So, we are all born in darkness until truth/light comes in us. This basically means that we are to fully know God (Faith= knowledge of God). It is possible for man to live forever if they fully know God.

Romans 14:14 14I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.

Seems to say that nothing we eat or do is in and of itself bad, it is our thinking it bad that makes it so. At first this sounds crazy but when we realize that what paul is saying is that we should not judge others by our standards instead we should STOP doing things we think are bad.

It seems at least in my case I have plenty to fix, too much to judge how someone else walks with God. Is that heretical? liberal? theologically unsound? I will probably find out soon enough, in the meantime I'll post the chapter ...

Romans 14

1Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. 2For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. 3Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. 4Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.
5One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. 6He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. 7For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. 8For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's. 9For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.
10But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
11For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
12So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
13Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way. 14I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. 15But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died. 16Let not then your good be evil spoken of: 17For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. 18For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men. 19Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. 20For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence. 21It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. 22Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth. 23And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

Yes at any point in time. No, not continually, this side of the grave or the rapture.

As a man thinks so shall it be.
If you aim low, you'll achive nothing higher. If you aim high you can't stop achiving at a low standard. By having a high standard you may achive high things.
By telling yourself you can't overcome, you won't overcome.
In our own strength we can't but with Jesus we can do all things.
Just like the gift of justification Jesus will gift us with sanctification. We must decrease and allow Him to increase. Make Jesus our master and crucify the flesh. To be fully sanctified will take eternity but we need to aim for it or we will never come close.
Even with a new body free from sin I'll continue to grow in my knowledge of God and therefore continue to become more and more like God. I'm glad it's a never-ending journey. But I'm glad that sin will end. Being sinless is possible through Christ in us.

Do you believe that these verses are teaching sinless perfection? I've seen people use the words of Jesus "go and sin no more" in John 8:11 to teach sinless perfection, yet Jesus was telling the woman to go and leave her life of sin, namely, she had been practicing adultery. Also, Jesus cannot compromise his perfect holy standard, so of course He is not going to say, "go and just sin a little bit."

In 1 John 3:9, the NASB says - No one who is born of God practices sin.. I've heard 3 different interpretations for 1 John 3:9. No one who is born of God ever sins at all (sinless perfection of the flesh), what is born of God (the divine nature) never sins at all, no one who is born of God "practices" - deliberately, knowingly, habitually. What say you?

In Hebrews 10:26, to "sin willfully" in the Greek carries the idea of deliberate intention that is habitual, which stems from rejecting Christ deliberately. This is CONTINUOUS ACTION - A MATTER OF PRACTICE. Now we don't walk along our daily life and "accidentally" fall into a pit called sin. We exercise our will but, the use of the participle clearly shows a CONTINUOUS ACTION. The unrighteous practice sin - (1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:19-21); not the righteous, who are born of God - (1 Corinthians 6:11; 1 John 3:9).

Those who believe they live a sinless, without fault or defect, flawless, absolute perfect life 100% of the time (exactly as Jesus lived) are suffering from a terminal case of self righteousness (1 John 1:8-10).

Yes, it is:

  • "Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous. He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God." (1John 3.6-9).
  • "We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not." (1John 5.19).

Ok, so I shouldn't worry about sinning? Just bearing fruit/good works?
Gak! I hate agreeing with Neh, but he has a point.

Where you focus is where you go.

There was a science experiment that proved this. The test subjects were told to focus on an object in the distance but to their left. And then they were told to walk straight ahead. Every single time, they ended up at the object, not straight ahead.

Where you focus is where you go.

Focus on the Lord. And, because I am me, and tend toward OCD, that is too big a focus for me. I do try focusing on the Lord throughout the day, (despite knowing it's not my ability that works lol), but sometimes that doesn't tell me what to do in every situation. So, when in doubt, I also go with what Jesus said about the two greatest commandments. Our motivation is always supposed to be loving God fully and loving others. When I check in on my motivation and discover I'm doing something for me, then I realize I have lost the correct focus. I'm back to focusing on me. Whoops! Immediately realize I'm back to heading to the object on the left again.

Probably why I don't think we'll ever be sinless on earth. It's no easier focusing on the Lord at 61 than it was at 16.
