The gift of tongues is only one on the list of spiritual gifts, as outlined in Corinthians and other books of the New Testament, but it seems to be the one that receves the most attention. Paul indicates that there are many gifts, but one Spirit. All of us have been given spiritual gifts as God sees fit. Some have the gift of tongues, some leadership, etc...
I grew up in what most people call "pentecostal" faiths, though I no longer believe in denominations (since I can't find any denominations in the scriptures - sola scriptura). When I was very young, I ..how can I put this...questioned the validity of the gift of tongues and prayed that God only would show me the truth, and He did. He made the gift of tongues very real in my life, and gave me the gift of interpretation, which is also ONE of the gifts on the list. It seemed to me that many people were worshipping the gift, rather than the Giver.
There are those who believe this gift has ceased, which seems odd to me, since the others have not. I think it's because a lot of people don't realize that it's a comma where the scripture talks about tongues ceasing, and not a period. It's important to read the rest of the sentence because it says that tongues would cease "when perfection comes." And we know that perfection will not come until we reign with our Lord. Now we see through the glass darkly, but perfection will then come.
The scriptures say that tongues are real, so they are real. I can't pick and choose which scriptures I choose to believe. If something is in the Bible, it's there. If it's not, it's not. I trust and believe the Lord completely.
Seek the Lord's truth in this matter, my friend, not the words and opinions of man, and He'll show you the truth, as He did me. He's the only one who knows all things, right?
Tongues may or may not be your particular spiritual gift. Take a look at the list and pray that He will not only show you which gifts are yours, but direct you in how He wants you to put them to use.
