I used to go to a Pentecostal church and left cause I can't accept speaking in tongues. I understand it in Bible days cause of lack of translators but now? What would be the purpose and I think its weird speaking in an unknown language? Any opinions?

In the Bible, speaking in tongues had a purpose. I don’t see much purpose for it in our churches today and find myself suspicious if people really are speaking in tongues.

It is weird but it's in the Bible and if it produces good results and not evil it is logical it would likely be of God, though with the real always come the counterfeit. I speak in tongues, my church I go to teaches about it, My mom who goes to the same church and is a strong Christian like me doesn't and hasn't had the desire to ask for the gift or do it but its fine either way, God will work with us where we are.

I thought speaking in tongues was your (or The Holy) Spirit praying, praising and worshiping God in a way that is impossible to put in Earthly words....

i don't find much purpose in mosquitos, but God has them on this earth anyway.

it has many purposes. and it's an amazing gift. i've been blessed innumerably by my own time in prayer, by others and the interpretations, and the beauty of how God uses it.

if i was a fisherman, i would appreciate mosquitos more. especially if i had a pond.

since i believe in and experience it, i appreciate it more.

God bless! :D

Hello, greatkraw.

1 Corinthians 14:22 [NIV];
Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.

God knows our motives. That includes whether the person who is speaking in tongues is genuine, or not. It's not our place to judge the heart, but we are told to observe each other's fruit. Don't worry about it. We just have to examine our own hearts before The Lord.

I go to a pentecostal church right now, but I have never spoek in tngues. At my church, we aren't crazy or excessive with it. I agree that it seems kind of pointless and when I see an entire church doing, I admit, it seems kind of fake. I don't know...But, my understanding is that it's a prayer language, like when you're really conncted to the Spirit and it's a language just bewteen you and God. I think it's kind of romantic. :] hehe.

Also, in the Bible, I think it says that speaking in tongues at the church should not be done if there isn't a translator present because there's no poit otherwise?

They do that at my church too sometimes and it's one of the few things I disagree with that they do.

I have been able to pray in tounges since I was young. It was not something I sought, I simply learned it was a gift of the Holy Spirit and tried, discovering the gift was with me.
Ive never prayed aloud for others as I understood one must have an interpiter presant. But I pray often in the Holy Spirit.
It is a beautiful way to pray as I know that the words express what I cannot in my own words.
I know that it is in Jesus is Lord and always feel blessed and humbled by it all.
The words truelly sound like a language, but I have never tried to find out if another could interpit.
Scripture says this is given so we can express what the mind cannot. But scripture also says that there are more valuable gifts to seek.
God bless, pickles

Hello All,
I used in prayer the speaking in tongue because i know this is the heavenly language that i can communicate God through spirit to spirit, because God is the spirit right? that's why its better to communicate using heavenly language.

Actually,Speaking in tongues is a gift of the spirit ,not given to everyone-we each recieve gifts as the spirit chooses to give-normally.one or two will speak in tongues and s

Also,I will add, I do Pray in other tongues-it is a gift from God.Normally I pray in my own language, but when deep in pryer and taken by the Holy Spirit I am in another place with God and not of this world. We also hear this in my church-usually in a specific place like a discipleship meeting-in this case we are 300 strong praying in one accord and in this time one or two will continue praying in toungues after we subside-then one will interpret the prophesy given..this is scriptural.when everyone is just speaking gibberish it is not the Spirit. it becomes for show-and we know how god feels about that! Just tossin this in the ring for consideration, everyone will still have their own opinion-

The gift of tongues is only one on the list of spiritual gifts, as outlined in Corinthians and other books of the New Testament, but it seems to be the one that receves the most attention. Paul indicates that there are many gifts, but one Spirit. All of us have been given spiritual gifts as God sees fit. Some have the gift of tongues, some leadership, etc...

I grew up in what most people call "pentecostal" faiths, though I no longer believe in denominations (since I can't find any denominations in the scriptures - sola scriptura). When I was very young, I ..how can I put this...questioned the validity of the gift of tongues and prayed that God only would show me the truth, and He did. He made the gift of tongues very real in my life, and gave me the gift of interpretation, which is also ONE of the gifts on the list. It seemed to me that many people were worshipping the gift, rather than the Giver.

There are those who believe this gift has ceased, which seems odd to me, since the others have not. I think it's because a lot of people don't realize that it's a comma where the scripture talks about tongues ceasing, and not a period. It's important to read the rest of the sentence because it says that tongues would cease "when perfection comes." And we know that perfection will not come until we reign with our Lord. Now we see through the glass darkly, but perfection will then come.

The scriptures say that tongues are real, so they are real. I can't pick and choose which scriptures I choose to believe. If something is in the Bible, it's there. If it's not, it's not. I trust and believe the Lord completely. :)

Seek the Lord's truth in this matter, my friend, not the words and opinions of man, and He'll show you the truth, as He did me. He's the only one who knows all things, right? :) Tongues may or may not be your particular spiritual gift. Take a look at the list and pray that He will not only show you which gifts are yours, but direct you in how He wants you to put them to use.

First, I believe that the plain meaning of the "tongues will cease" is that when perfect love comes, the need for the gifts will disaooear.

Second, Corinthians refers to the glossalia as various giftings of glossalia, indicating that it has several, perhaps many applications.
