“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. [SUP]19 [/SUP]If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. [SUP]20 [/SUP]Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. [SUP]21 [/SUP]But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me."

I started thinking about this after I posted in the ice cream thread. And it occurred to me that it sounds like another one of Christ's claims to deity.

I say that because He was physically on the earth for 33 years. To me, that wouldn't give the entire world enough time to hate Him as He said it did (and does). Therefore, I think He was also referring to the time period from the fall of man to His human birth. Which also brings in the idea of Christophanies. I believe that Christ is the Person of the Trinity who interacted with mankind prior to His coming to earth as a man. John himself said that "no one has seen God at any time", which is most likely a reference to God the Father.

This is not a dogmatic statement; just my thoughts.

I should also say that the time period may have started when Lucifer rebelled and became Satan, but I'm not really sure.

The whole of John chapter 14/15/16 is where Jesus tries to explain the authorities of God- the Father/son/Holy spirit. To summarize, Jesus was handing over the sonship to believers to be the Father. The reason He said in some part that he will send the Holy Spirit and in other parts, He will ask the father to send Him, And in some parts, He will do whatever they asked in His name while in other parts, the Father will do whatever they ask.

John 14:26But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.

John 14:16
And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever-

John 15:26
When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father--the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father--He will testify about Me.

John 16:7
But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

John 16: 23In that day you will no longer ask Me anything. Truly, truly, I tell you, whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.24Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete

John 14:
13And I will do whatever you ask in My name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.

Time is not relevant to the " world " hating our LORD. When He refers to the world, I believe He is talking about the things the world treasures, things which are opposed to His teachings. Ro 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
Also, even though our LORD was on this earth for 33 years, His ministry was a mere 3 years, and it is evident that His Words traveled faster than He or His Apostles.
Furthermore; During His ministry our LORD revealed who He was for those who would or could see, I think this is very different from laying claims to His deity.
In terms of no person ever seeing God , does refer to God the Father. The passage escapes me now, but I believe it is written that any mortal seeing the face of God would die.
Many believe that when the bible speaks of (the or an) " angel of the Lord " it is Christ appearing.

But Jesus was addressing people who are on the earth for a short time as the world hating them also. And I, personally, do not feel that there is anyone in the world who hates me. Was He talking about the "world systems" set up in place from Adam on? The world systems of government and cultural traditions that are anti-Christ?

Maybe we should look at the word "hate" and the scriptural definitions. Too much for me this morning.
