The children of Israel failed to enter into rest in the promised land because of unbelief, and we should strive to not fall after the pattern of their disobedience.

There is a rest afforded believers in this present age and through unbelief we will suffer the consequences and find no rest and peace...it has nothing to do with losing salvation....nor does it indicate being cast away...even though they were not allowed to enter the promised land of rest, God did not cast them away...he led them 40 years in the wilderness by the pillar of fire and smoke which made his presence known, he through MOSES led them, provided for them, gave them a form of worship which pointed to Christ and raised a new generation that would go in and take the land......by faith!

What truth are we to glean from the wilderness story?
There are several lessons to be learned from this passage below:

1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.
5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.
6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:
7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
8 For if Jesus [Joshua] had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.
9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

1. This is primarily addressed to Hebrew believers who were vacillating between the rest of the New Covenant and the works of the Old Covenant.

2. The Israelites in the wilderness had every reason to trust God and rest in His promises about their entrance into Canaan. But it was unbelief which caused ten of those 12 spies to become fearful about their entrance, and only Joshua and Caleb believed God.

3. As a result, that entire generation of Israelites perished in the wilderness of Sinai, and it was the next generation which entered Canaan. But even Joshua who led this generation into Canaan could not give his people the spiritual rest which comes from trusting and obeying God. Hence the disastrous book of Judges.

4. Canaan is a type of Heaven, and only those who rest in the finished work of Christ and stop trying to earn their salvation through their own good works will enter Heaven.

5. Those who have been saved by grace through faith have already entered into the sabbath rest of God (which is eternal). They are not trusting in themselves, but wholly trusting in Christ and His finished work of redemption, as well as His ongoing mediation and advocacy on their behalf in Heaven.

6. To "labour" to enter into God's rest is really to fully believe what God has said regarding salvation, and that we are not appointed to wrath but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

This sounds like you're saying none of those Israelites went to Hell when judged. Is that what you're saying?

Simply put those who believe also obey, and those who do not will not enter the Eternal Kingdom of YHWH. Those who do will enter, just as the picture of Joshua ben Nun entering the promised land shows.

I am going to post a more full breakdown of Hebrews 4, I had replied to another member on this matter a few days ago, I'm going to build on that with more Scripture and thoughts, praise YHWH!

Hebrews chapter 4 talks about a “rest remaining for the people of Yah” We are going to review this and see the this “rest” is indeed in the Messiah, it is speaking of eternal life, however none have yet entered into this “rest” Yahshua offers. People say things like “I rest in Jesus” and “Jesus is the Sabbath now.” While this sounds wonderful, it is not Scriptually accurate. Let us search the Scriptures and prove what the “rest” Yahshua offers is. Since Hebrews chapter 3 leads into what is being explained in chapter 4 we can start there;

Hebrews 3:7-19, “Therefore, as the Set-apart Spirit says, “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of trial in the wilderness, where your fathers tried Me, proved Me, and saw My works forty years. Therefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart, and they have not known My ways. As I swore in My wrath, ‘If they shall enter into My rest...’ Look out, brothers, lest there be in any of you a wicked heart of unbelief in falling away from the living Elohim, but encourage one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened by the deceivableness of sin. For we have become partakers of Messiah if we hold fast the beginning of our trust firm to the end, while it is said, “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” For who, having heard, rebelled? Was it not all who came out of Mitsrayim, led by Mosheh? Andwith whom was He grieved forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? And to whom did He swear that they would not enter into His rest, but to those who did not obey? So we see that they were unable to enter in because of unbelief.

How did they “harden their hearts” and “rebel” in the wilderness?

Exodus 16:25-28, “And Mosheh said, “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to יהוה, today you do not find it in the field. Gather it six days, but on the seventh day, which is the Sabbath, there is none.” And it came to be that some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, but they found none. And יהוה said to Mosheh, “How long shall you refuse to guard My commands and My Torah?”

By not obeying YHWH, notice how “not obeying” is synonymous with “unbelief” Also note what Hebrews 3:18-19 says concerning “entering rest”, “And to whom did He swear that they would not enter into His rest, but to those who did not obey? So we see that they were unable to enter in because of unbelief.

Enter in what/where? “
His rest” Yet we know this is talking about them dying in the wilderness and never enter “the promised land/physical Israyl.”This is a metaphor using the promised land of physical Israyl comparing it to the Eternal Kingdom of Yah that is coming; thus;

2 Thessalonians 1:5-10, “Clear evidence of the righteous judgment of
יהוה, in order for you to be counted worthy of the reign of יהוה, for which you also suffer, since יהוה shall rightly repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give you who are afflicted rest with us when the Master יהושע is revealed from heaven with His mighty messengers....”

Psalms 95:8-11, “Do not harden your hearts as in Meriḇah, And as in the day of Massah in the wilderness, When your fathers tried Me, Have proved Me, though they saw My work. For forty years I was grieved with that generation, And said, ‘They are a people who go astray in their hearts, And they do not know My ways. As I swore in My wrath, ‘If they enter into My rest...”

Revelation 14:13, “And I heard a voice from heaven saying to me: Write:Blessed are the dead, the ones dying in the Messiah from now on! Yes, says the Spirit: because they will rest from their labors, and their works do follow them!”

If we look at the way the writer of Hebrews interprets the “trial in the wilderness” (Exodus 16:25-28,) in Hebrews 3:7-19 and coming up in Hebrews 4, interpreting Scripture with Scripture looking to Revelation 14:13, we can see it is a future rest, in Messiah, but not attainable while in a physical body.

Hebrews 4:1, “Therefore, since a promise remains of entering into His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.”

If this was written AFTER Yahshua/Jesus came in the flesh as the suffering Lamb, and if we can enter into the rest He offers NOW why is it written “since a promise remains of entering into His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it” Why would a promise remain, the rest would be here already. No the promise remains because it is future:

Matthew 10:22, “And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.”

Matt 24:12-13, “And because of the increase in lawlessness, the love of many shall become cold. But he who shall have endured to the end shall be saved.”

Hebrews 3:14, “For we have become partakers of Messiah if we hold fast the beginning of our trust firm to the end.”

Hebrews 10:36, “For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of Yah you may receive what is promised.”

2 Thessalonians 1:5-10, “Clear evidence of the righteous judgment of יהוה, in order for you to be counted worthy of the reign of יהוה, for which you also suffer, since יהוה shall rightly repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give you who are afflicted rest with us when the Master יהושע is revealed from heaven with His mighty messengers....”

Revelation 14:13, "And I heard a voice from heaven saying to me: Write:
Blessed are the dead, the ones dying in the Messiah from now on! Yes, says the Spirit: because they will rest from their labors, and their works do follow them!"

Hebrews 4:2, "For indeed the Good News was brought to us as well as to them, but the word which they heard did not profit them, not having been mixed with belief in those who heard it."4:3, "For we who have believed do enter into that rest, as He has said, “As I swore in My wrath, if they shall enter into My rest...” And yet His works have come into being from the foundation of the world."

Hebrews “4:3, "For we who have believed do enter into that rest,...yet His works have come into being from the foundation of the world.”

Context right? “believed” Do you see how in this writers mind there is no difference between believing and obeying?

Hebrews 3:16-19, “For some, when they had heard, rebelled. But not all rebelled who came out of Egypt through Mosheh. But with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? And to whom did He vow that they would not enter into His rest, but to those who did not obey? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.”

Simply put those who believe also do.

Hebrews 4:2, “For this message was preached to us, as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not benefit them, because they did not share in the faith of those who obeyed.”

If the promised land/physical Israyl was used in chapter 3 as a metaphor, and the rest offered is eternal life as written here:

2 Thessalonians 1:5-10, “Clear evidence of the righteous judgment of יהוה, in order for you to be counted worthy of the reign of יהוה, for which you also suffer, since יהוה shall rightly repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give you who are afflicted rest with us when the Master יהושע is revealed from heaven with His mighty messengers....”

Hebrews 4:3, “For we who have believed do enter into that rest..”

At first glance it seems this rest is entered now, however consider 2 things.

1. If the “rest” is the Eternal Kingdom what if I say “we who do enter the Kingdom” This phrase does not only mean we who enter it now or have already entered it, but rather “we who do enter” as in future. When this is looked at in context the very next thing written it seems even more plausible;

2. and “His works have come into being from the foundation of the worldis quoted from Psalm 95;

As I swore in My wrath, ‘If they enter into My rest...And yet His works have come into being from the foundation of the world.”

YHWH already knows who will enter His kingdom “from the foundation of the world.”

Isaiah 46:10, “Declaring the end from the beginning, and from of old that which has not yet been done, saying, ‘My counsel does stand, and all My delight I do.”

Ezekiyl 12:25, “For I am יהוה, I speak. And the word which I speak is done. It is no longer deferred. For in your days, O rebellious house, when I speak the word I shall do it,” declares the Master יהוה.”

And speaks of things that have not yet been fulfilled/happened yet as if they are already past;

This is satan being spoken of as if already destroyed “I brought forth fire from your midst. It has devoured you, and I turned you to ashes”;

Ezekiyl 28:13-19, “You were in Ĕḏen, the garden of the Most High. Every precious stone was your covering: the ruby, topaz, and diamond, beryl, shoham, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald and gold. The workmanship of your settings and mountings was prepared for you on the day you were created. You were the anointed keruḇ that covered. And I placed you, you were on the set-apart mountain of Yah. You walked up and down in the midst of stones of fire. You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, until unrighteousness was found in you. By the greatness of your trade you became filled with violence within, and you sinned. So I thrust you from the mountain of Yah, and I destroyed you, O covering keruḇ, from the midst of the stones of fire. Your heart was lifted up because of your loveliness, you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendour. I threw you to the earth, I laid you before sovereigns, to look at you. You profaned your set-apart places by your many crookednesses, by the unrighteousness of your trading. Therefore I brought forth fire from your midst. It has devoured you, and I turned you to ashes upon the earth before the eyes of all who see you. All who knew you among the peoples were astonished at you. Waste you shall be, and cease to be, forever.”

There are more examples of this, however this one is clearly a future thing spoken as if it has already happened.

Hebrews 4:4, "For somewhere He has said thus about the seventh day, “And Elohim rested on the seventh day from all His works in this again, “If they shall enter into My rest...”

Here we see “the seventh day” is mentioned, lets review what the 7[SUP]th[/SUP] day is and represents;

Genesis 2:2-3, “And on the seventh day the Mighty One completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made. And Elohim blessed the seventh day and set it apart, because on it He rested from all His work which the Mighty One in creating had made.”

Exodus 17:7, “And he called the name of the place Massah and Meriḇah, because of the ‘strife’ of the children of Yisra’yl, and because they ‘tried’ יהוה, saying, “Is יהוה in our midst or not?”

“the seventh day,...the seventh day from all His works in this again,...“If they shall enter into My rest...”

The 7[SUP]th[/SUP] day? 7,000 years, the 7[SUP]th[/SUP] day or years 6,001-7,000 represents the “Sabbath millennium,” all of the Moadim (appointed times) of YHWH are prophetic pictures of works of the Messiah;

Fulfilled already- To be fulfilled in the future

1. Passover/First-fruits – Yahshua's Sacrifice(Passover), burial and resurrection (First Fruits – presenting Himself to YHWH)
2. Feast of Unleavened Bread – Removal of sin by Yahshua's perfect work as the Passover Sacrifice
3. Feast of Weeks – The blessing Holy Spirit of YHWH, coming into our lives stronger than ever

4. Feast of Trumpets – Yahshua's return and gathering of the Saints
5. Day of Atonement – Yahshua leads the army of YHWH to destroy evil rulers of this world and satan is chained for 1,000 years
6. Feast of Tabernacles – Yahshua dwells on earth for 1,000 years teaching truth and righteousness
7. The Last Great Day – satan is loosed and swiftly destroyed, the Kingdom of YHWH reigns forever

The 7[SUP]th[/SUP] day Sabbath represents “Sabbath millennium” or “the 7[SUP]th[/SUP] day”;

2 Peter 3:8, “But, beloved ones, let not this one matter be hidden from you: that with יהוה one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”

If you add up the genealogies in the Scripture we are around the year 6,000 nearing the “Sabbath millennium”...

Hosheyah 6:1-3, “Come, and let us turn back to יהוה. For He has torn but He does heal us, He has stricken but He binds us up. After two days He shall revive us, on the third day He shall raise us up, so that we live before Him. So let us know, let us pursue to know יהוה. His going forth is as certain as the morning. And He comes to us like the rain, like the latter rain watering the earth.”

Yahshua came 2,000 years ago.. Hosheyah 6:1-3 says, “After two days He shall revive us...”

Rev 20:4-6, "And I saw thrones – and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them – and the lives of those who had been beheaded because of the witness they bore to יהושע and because of the Word of the Mighty One, and who did not worship the beast, nor his image, and did not receive his mark upon their foreheads or upon their hands. And they lived and reigned with Messiah for a thousand years and the rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended) – this is the first resurrection. Blessed and set-apart is the one having part in the first resurrection. The second death possesses no authority over these, but they shall be priests of YHWH and of Messiah, and shall reign with Him a thousand years."

How did “Joshua speak of another day,” we can see Joshua did not fall in the wilderness but entered into “the promised land”

Hebrews 4:10, “For the one, having entered into His rest, has himself also rested from his works, as the Mighty One rested from His own.”

Therefore, since we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, יהושע the Son of the Mighty One, let us hold fast our confession. In Hebrews 4:2-3, we read: For indeed the gospel was preached to US as well as to THEM; but the word which THEY heard did not profit THEM, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. For WE who have BELIEVED do enter that rest, as He has said: "So I swore in My wrath, 'They shall not enter My rest," although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

Notice that verses 2-3 makes a distinction between "us" who have BELIEVED and do enter that rest and "them" who heard the word but did not mix faith with what they heard and will not enter that rest because of UNBELIEF.

What truth are we to glean from the wilderness story?
A big part of it for me is in gathering more than enough for the day in the disobedience of mistrust rather than the obedience of trust (faith).

We can see a correlation to us in present day, regarding our worry and anxious thoughts over collecting more than enough for the day in our IRA's, rather than trusting Him to give us our need daily.

What truth are we to glean from the wilderness story?
I would offer that some men do not mix faith the unseen eternal in what they do see or hear, the temporal, or do not know how according to the prescription below.

While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. 2 Cor.4:18

It has somewhat to do with parables and looking for the unseen spiritual understanding hid in parables. Many seem to shy away from parables even though Christ informs us without parables he spoke not to the multitude. Which is those who had faith and those who had none, making it impossible to mix faith. They would be identified as restless wanderers (natural man) having not received the hidden spiritual understanding, called the hidden Mana spoken of in the book of Revelation. No Sabbath rest that comes when they hear the voice of God and do not harden their hearts. Christ softens our hearts

Another problem I believe is because some make a non-time sensitive word Sabbath into one that is time sensitive and argue about what day can men can receive that rest. The scripture calls it today and long as today is still today and the new heavens and earth have not appeared without the time keepers the Sun and the moon. The Glory of the Lord will be the light. There will be no darkness, day and night

Again the key seems to be how do we “mix faith” in order to rest in His Love?

Hebrews 4 King James Version (KJV)
Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest. Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
