Fig tree fruit

Fruiting fig trees have a long juvenile period compared to other fruit trees.
Fig trees produce two crops every year, but only one of them may be edible.

In some tropical locations, fig trees may bear some fruit throughout the year,
with increased production in early summer and midwinter

The first crop, called the breba crop, occurs relatively early in the year on
the previous year's growth. These fruits are frequently small, acidic and
inferior in texture, but may be useful for preservation. The second crop occurs
later in the year on the current year's growth and these figs should be edible.

Interesting facts about the fig tree. Thanks!

I was told that fig trees produce figs first then the leaves appear so, when Jesus saw the leaves on the tree as He was approaching it caused Him to expect figs. But, there were no figs, no fruit.

The lesson I gleaned was that the "leaves" was a form of righteousness on the outside but, there was no "fruit of righteousness" that would help others. Just a show - deceptive.

It made me think, this might have been the reason why Adam and Eve choose fig leaves for covering. Just my thoughts.

Follow up question from prov-all regarding fig tree cursed by Jesus.


Was it a First crop, or a second crop ?

My guess would be the second crop because there were suppose to be edible figs and there were none.

I have often wondered about this. People have said that it was because the tree had no fruit. But it seems to me that, like Jesus, many other travelers had wanted fruit from that tree. They would have then plucked it bare before Jesus got there. So, is it the tree's fault that other travelers had stripped it before Jesus got there?

Even if it had no fruit at all, wasn't it just following its genetic programming? It seems to me that the tree was innocent of any wrong doing, so why kill it?

This has been a puzzlement to me.

Then again, according to Paul, God creates some things for noble purposes and some things for ignoble. Perhaps this tree was created just so Jesus could demonstrate this object lesson. I suppose that the tree had no immortal soul to worry about, so killing it was not a moral issue.

But I have wondered about why Jesus would kill an innocent tree just to make a point. :)

Back to the fig tree, I have also wondered if Jesus killed the fig tree because it did not meet His expectations, even though the tree itself had no say in whether or not it bore figs. Either it had been stripped by others or its genetic programming told it not to bear figs.

I then wonder what Jesus will do to me for not meeting His expectations.

Just a thought. :)

Remember that parable Jesus told about the Owner wanting to chop down a tree because it wasn't bearing fruit and the gardener asked for the Owner to be patient and let the gardener tend to it and give it some time, after which if the tree STILL did not bear fruit, then the gardener would cut it down?

Luke 13:

[h=3]The Parable of the Barren Fig Tree[/h][FONT=&quot]6 He also spoke this parable: “A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none.7 Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, ‘Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?’ 8 But he answered and said to him, ‘Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it.9 And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that[a] you can cut it down.’”[/FONT]

I think this fig tree was like that. And, yes, it was an example of Israel - all the Pharisees and Sadducees, etc. rejecting their Messiah. Yet, still their rejection ushered in the Gentiles! Praise God!!!

Surely, if God saves the Gentiles, He will save that fig tree. I'm sure there is a "remnant" of it left in the Earth! :)

The withering of the fig tree occurred as Jesus and His disciples were approaching Jerusalem during what we now call Holy Week, just prior to His arrest and crucifixion at the hands of the Jewish and Gentile leaders. I believe Jesus was signifying that no fruit was to come of the Jewish sacrificial system again, for it was to be replaced with His once for all sacrifice as the perfect Lamb of God. You could even say that He was the fruit of that system/covenant, for His death and resurrection ushered in the New Covenant under which men are now reconciled to God and attain to life ever after in the world to come following the resurrection and judgment of all at the end of this age.
