The older simpler baptismal pool [Ethiopian] represents how the church was
in the beginning - sober, plain, without embellishment, no images, etc.
The Roman baptismal pool is from Tunisia probably after 300 AD (after Constantine)
and Christianity is now prospering as a mainstream religion.
Notice the embellishments.

This is the baptismal bath or font in a 3rd century AD (late 200s) Christian house
that had living quarters on one side and a couple of rooms set aside for a house
church to make use of. > Duras Europos
The baptismal pool/font had now become a very large ornate bathtub suitable for
adults to be immersed in.
Notice how over time and with prosperity the simplicity of the original stone pools
are replaced by much more decorative styles and displays of wealth.
I think we still have this problem today !!
