The holy spirit is needed for repentance and to be born again....the Law convicts us of our sins.

Jesus is our Advocate.

Satan is our Accuser.

There is a difference between conviction and condemnation.

16 And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another
Comforter, so that He may be with you forever,
17 the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive because
it does not see Him nor know Him. But you know Him, for He dwells
with you and shall be in you.
26 But the Comforter, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send
in My name, He shall teach you all things and bring all things
to your remembrance, whatever I have said to you.
John 14:

26 And when the Comforter has come, whom I will send to you
from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father,
He shall testify of Me.
John 15:

7 But I tell you the truth, it is expedient for you that I go away;
for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you.
But if I depart, I will send Him to you.
8 And when that One comes, He will convict the world concerning
sin,
and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment.
9 Concerning sin, because they do not believe on Me;
10 concerning righteousness, because I go to My Father
and you see Me no more;
11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
13 However, when He, the Spirit of Truth, has come, He will
guide you into all truth.
For He shall not speak of Himself, but
whatever He hears, He shall speak. And He will announce to
you things to come.
14 He will glorify Me, for He will receive of Mine and will
announce it to you.
John 16:

Regardless of your opinion of the necessity for the Holy Spirit to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgement scripture declares that He does do these things.

I see salvation as something that happens to God's people, just like a lifeguard saves someone in over his head. First the saving, then the conviction.

In the case of the lifeguard, the person being saved can already be dead, and yet will be brought to shore, the breath of life applied, and if the person happens to start breathing when it is applied, then the lifeguard gives instructions. (Usually something along the line of "breathe. Breathe. Breathe," followed by, "calm down, you're all right." And then something along the lines of "cough it out" and then "I've sent for help."

Is that still part of being saved? Of course it is, but as the saved, not the savior, our part happens after his part, and his part doesn't stop happening until it's established we're going to keep living.

With Christ as our Savior, we were already saved from death. I think the Holy Spirit is the Breath of Life that keeps us going. And part of that keeps us going is "cough it up." That is the conviction of sin. We know our lungs can't live on water, so he makes us want to cough out the bad stuff and inhale his good stuff.

And now I'm curious if I got halfway where you wanted this to go. lol

There is a conviction of sin brought about by culture or legalistic people. That is when you are told as a child that wearing shorts, playing cards, dancing, etc. is sin. Repentance can be there if you buy into it, but not the repentance needed for salvation.

The conviction of sin brought about by the Holy Spirit is wrapped in the message of grace and mercy. You realize that the deepest sin is your alienation from God. You realize your helplessness in the pursuit of goodness. You feel shame in the way you have hurt yourself and others. Repentance from that place leads to salvation and sanctification.

Yes, the Holy spirit convicts us through the word by giving us the understanding- same process applies to judgement.

Isn't that clearly stated in the Bible? So what point are you trying to establish?

For sinners, it is one and the same thing. And this OP is about sinners getting saved through the convicting of the Holy Spirit.

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!"

Wow!! Lovely, lovely post, Joi! God's love just radiates through your comment.

Hallelujah!! Glory to God!! Bless His name!!

The Holy Spirit convicts someone of their need for eternal salvation. The person then either receives Christ as their Saviour or refuses.

But definitely ...conviction first.

That conviction is non other than a believer grieving the Holy Spirit that is in them, but it does not convict an unbeliever. conviction is not in the bible. it is a sentence handed down on someone to be punished.

How refreshing a new subject and one that is certainly interesting,I believe the answer to your question is best clarified in this fashion...
1.Conviction by others whether true or not concerning one's self
2.Conviction by way of "hearing" God's word by preaching or word of mouth from individuals
3.Conviction of sin through the law of moses/God through reading God's word yourself
4.Conviction through the holy spirit after receiving Salvation and the Holy spirit by way of accepting all of Jesus's works for you and accepting him as Saviour and Lord
That's the "order" I have noticed concerning myself and I would gather many have went through the same events in that order but not necessarily.
Concerning your question the Holy spirit convicts "after" accepting salvation through Jesus not before this isn't as if to say that God doesn't give us "clues" as to what is right and what is wrong but it is one's "individual choice" to accept salvation and the Holy spirit conviction from the Holy spirit is not required to accept salvation seeing as that the Holy spirit can hardly "convict" one who doesn't "know him".
The order I have clarified is a reflection of the possible "life" of an individual that could "lead" to accepting salvation and accepting the Holy spirit showing that it's quite a "road" before one reaches the Holy spirit though it's not impossible to have a "belief" before hand as well as a "convicting" conscience it's kind of like you can just "believe" that God/Jesus/Holy spirit exists before "committing" to him conviction occurs in quite a variety the Holy spirit's conviction is just more "thorough".

Yeah you first have to think on "do you care" what happens concerning a lot of aspects because a person can preach to someone all day long so to speak but if the individual "doesn't care" about what is being preached then they'll "stay the same".
