I don't understand some Bible verses.
Matthew 10:34 34 "Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36 and one's foes will be members of one's own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me."
Luke 12:51-53 51 "Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! 52 From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; 53 they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."
Luke 14:26 26 "Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple.
I checked out a half-dozen different versions of the Bible and the all use the same word "hate".
I checked out my " The Complete Word Study New Testament" and the English word" hate" is translated from the Greek word "3404 (hatred) to detest (especially to persecute) by extension to love less – hate( – ful)"
I must have read right over these verses and not paid attention to the words and they contradict my beliefs and what I was taught about Jesus Christ.
If anyone can explain this verses (without ignoring words) I would appreciate that you respond to me.
Thank You

These passages are not difficult to understand. The fundamental fact is that the unsaved world is under the control of Satan, and unless sinners repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, they face eternal separation from God in Hell.

Now when a person gets saved, God moves them from the Kingdom of Darkness into the Kingdom of Light (the Kingdom of God) where Christ is King. However, if everyone in their family does not get saved, there is an AUTOMATIC CONFLICT, and the unsaved becomes alienated from those who are saved.

Hence Christ brings division to families, and in some cases there is real hatred against those who become Christians. At the same time, the person who is saved must love God and Christ to the point where they cannot continue to fellowship with the rest of their family members. In effect this becomes a form of hatred because there is now spiritual division between the child of God and the children of the devil.

Actually in the "carnal mind" they are perplexing because of the main word "hate".

This a "Great" subject to discuss and it will "take some time" I would figure for a "strongly conclusive answer" because there are some aspects to those verses that can be "bewildering" for instance one thing to notice is that Jesus is talking to "his disciples" and even on the rare occasion using the word "hate" explaining that his disciples would have to "forsake" even their families to serve him telling them of what "commitment" he expected of them and for them to be "set apart" from others as well.

The spirit of God in you is hated by the world. The spirit of the world and the spirit of god are opposed to one another, they 'hate' each other. They are at war. This even effects families and close friends. Have you not experienced family members fighting with each other over spiritual matters? I thought it was obvious because I've seen it in my own family and among friends. When you choose God you turn your back on the world and that includes any relatives who remain outside the body of Christ. It doesn't mean you can't love them, pray for them & believe for them to accept their salvation but sometimes hostilities can flare up and a spiritual barrier is all too evident. Witnessing to family members can be more difficult that witnessing to strangers. I think Jesus was simply speaking spiritual reality in those verses not trying to encourage you to foster hatred in your heart.

So, since I've not noticed you before this, I had to peek at your About Me page to see who is asking. You're "unsure." Nothing wrong with that, (for now), but just needed to know where you're coming from when you ask.

And now I do. You don't get this Jesus fellow. You don't get this God fellow. And you're not so sure he even exists. OR maybe you're pretty sure God does exist, but so what? What does that have to do with you?

But everything you've heard of him is about this peaceable dude who loves everyone, so what's with him saying to hate anyone?

Getting your intent fairly well so far?

Here's the thing, from your perspective. How would you take it, if you told me I should think like you and I don't want to? You have every logical reason to believe what you believe, right? And I should be reasonable enough to go along with it peaceably right? What if I'm not? Should you change your mind to fit my belief? Isn't that peaceable way to resolve that?

No?

You betcha, no! And here's the thing, I don't believe like you and can never believe like you again, because God showed me he is real, he taught me a new way to think, and he gives me the skill set and mindset to live like that.

And considering God himself gave me that, why would I believe what you believe just to uphold peacefulness and love? Is it really peace when what I'm really doing is holding my mouth shut to avoid arguing? It may look like peace, but not inside. And is it really loving if I simply avoid telling the truth so no one gets upset? Your life is at stake! If you never believe God, you have to pay the penalty for your sins, and it is not a simple prison sentence. It's an eternity sentence.

So, if I tell you to go to the Lord, realize he's the creator and sovereign ruler of the universe and more, and then repent of your sin, one of two things will happen. Either you believe me, do just that, and then get to know what I know, or you're going to be very ticked, hate me, and do everything in your power to stop nuts like me.

We get this. We really do. And we do get this hate can come from friends, family, or even strangers we meet online. It already has with me. But, better to hate them than to give up our stand with the Lord.

Make sense?

You said "for instance one thing to notice is that Jesus is talking to "his disciples" and even on the rare occasion using the word "hate".
I should've started with verse 25. Luke 14:25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.
Jesus was speaking to a large crowd when he used the word "hate".
Thank you very much for treating me with respect-I don't always get that at this website.

Jesus did that often. Many were attracted to him, but he was able to push away the tourists to find the citizens. (Tourists = people who are just there to see the sights. Citizens = those who moved in and made him their home.)

The tourists were never going to commit to eating his flesh and drinking his blood. Too yucky. The citizens couldn't live without him. The tourists were never going to go against their family. The citizens couldn't live without him, so are willing to hate their family.

It's a thing about how far are you willing to commit. It's also very much a thing about knowing where we come from, so knowing we have no choice. He's it for hope. He's our everything, or he is just another sight to see. He gives no wiggle room.

Hello 6miker88,

Jesus was thinning out the pack! So many people were following Him for the signs and wonders and miracles.

He was opening their eyes to the realization that to follow him they would have to "disconnect" emotionally (hate is an emotion) to all that they love. God has to be my "First and Only Love." Jesus Christ rules and reigns over my heart and it belongs to no other.

It's as if our hearts are thrones and if I choose to follow Christ, then He is the ONLY One that I give the right to sit upon the throne of my heart.

As far as eating His flesh and drinking His blood. This takes spiritual ears to hear what the Spirit is saying. To find this meaning please refer to my blog regarding The Lord our Righteousness.

So glad you asked about the scriptures! :)

You're quite welcome and yeah depending on which of the four gospels some of the verses "vary" on details so I particularly pointed out the disciples because of course that's what Jesus's subject was at that time.

Welcome to CC!

I have found that since being saved I have indeed come to hate this life. I am not suicidal and I have a great life but deep down I often see the cruelty and unfairness in this life and long for the next one. It will be so incredibly awesome that we can not even imagine it!

As far as family goes, I love my nieces dearly but I hate that they are not saved. Not yet, anyway.

Not sure if that answers your question but as always it's just my two cents worth.
