I was going to post this under miscellaneous but I decided it was Biblical. As free people in America we have the right to just about everything, but as a Christian what do we give up our right to? I feel gay so I am going to have sex with samesex pairtners? OMG you said something bad about me .... So your dirty secret is off the table... Just because you are "within your rights" are you right? What is loving your neighbor as yourself or even turning the other cheek? Is there a line to these things? ....

I think this is why we have character, and if we look at God, He was within His rights to condemn mankind, to judge them and say no more. Yet, what do we know of God, who is love? He was merciful to us, all of us. Likewise, we may be within our rights (in the opinion of men) but our standard is greater. We love. We show mercy. Just because you can, and no one will fault you, doesn't mean you should.

Honor the Lord in your actions towards others. Do all things unto the glory of God, right? They may ask why you didn't respond in the manner they deserved, and you get to reveal the goodness of God (His grace and mercy).

Our rights as Christians are "limited" if you will, by Jesus' teachings. He even spelled out some of them in the "you have heard it said.... but I tell you..." scriptures.

He was saying that even if the law says 'here are your boundaries', our boundaries, as believers, are set somewhere short of the 'legal' boundaries. If we live within Jesus' boundaries, the world will see the difference in us, and will want to know WHY we are different.

We become living examples of what "walking in the light" is all about.

We ought to follow the example of Paul:

  • "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved." (1Cor 10.33).

As a child of God you are called to a higher standard. Living under American law may allow you to do many things which go against the teachings of God. If a store clerk gives you incorrect change in your favor, do you keep it or give it back? If the clerk gives you change not in your favor, do you accuse them of theft? Do you treat people as you wold like to be treated?
When someone is unkind to you or does you a harm, do you plot revenge or do you seek forgiveness and salvation for them through prayer?
2Ti 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
