Do you read both the OT and the NT? If not why?

I had someone say to me they only read the NT because they do not believe in the OT.

What is your favorite OT/NT of the Bible? Mine Isaiah, because it is the Book that most fulfills my faith, and Hebrews, because it is the only NT Book that explains and made me understood Y-shua is Messiah.

The old testament is the new testament hidden....the new testament is the old revealed. Kinda foolish if ya didn't read both.

Do you read both the OT and the NT?
How could anyone know what God actually said if they didn't read it in the Bible?

I had someone say to me they only read the NT because they do not believe in the OT.
Yet ironically the OT and the NT are based upon the same precepts only written from a different perspective.

What is your favorite OT/NT of the Bible?
Actually my favorite book isn't written within the pages of the OT/NT.

I love both, if a person only reads the NT they are just reading the
final chapters of an amazing book. What’s the point of that.

Plus they won’t understand the NT properly.

The OT is full of amazing people and their lives it’s the foundation of the whole
story of salvation.

I know this sounds strange but one of my favourites is the setting up of the
tabanacle. After all it’s a representation of heaven isn’t it!

It’s like God was willing to put up with a very crude make shift tent to dwell with His
people. But then Jesus did the same when He took human form!

What a wonderful parallel. Imagine missing out on that by not reading the OT.

I have always read both. If the OT was good enough for Jesus, the disciples and Paul, it’s good enough for me.

Seriously, both the OT and the NT reveal Jesus. In fact, I don’t understand how anyone can grow as a Christian and understand the NT without understanding the OT. It’s like s big chunk is missing, in their walk with God, if they are not reading both!

I love the Psalms, the narratives, and Isaiah. In the NT, 2nd Corinthians speaks to me, and the other of Paul’s epistles. The gospels are so important, and probably Romans is most important, studied and memorized book of the NT for me. I also like Hebrews. I’m reading Revelation right now, and I seriously don’t understand it. I need to get out my Greek commentary by Beale again.

Both. I read the old more because there is more of it. I actually prefer the old & I don't know many other Christians that will own up to that. I think it has a lot to do with the writing styles of the prophets. I just love the OT. My favourite books are Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations & Ezekiel.

Both because it's all the Word of God. Over the years I've learned how important it is when reading the Bible to understand that the whole Bible is written "FOR" us all but not everything in the Bible is written "TO" us.

Some promises and instructions are specifically to Israel alone in the OT while other promises or instructions are written for all believers too. For instance when David prayed in the Psalms "take not your Holy Spirit from me" Psalm 51:10-11

[SUP]10 [/SUP]Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me.
[SUP]
11 [/SUP]Cast me not away from Your presence and take not Your Holy Spirit from me.

In the new covenant (post cross) we have the Holy Spirit residing in us who promises never to leave us. The old covenant saints did not have that promise. So praying that now would not apply to us but it applied to David because in the OT the Holy Spirit came on people and left them too.

The same with create in me a clean heart oh God. When we got saved., we got a brand new heart that is clean at all times because of Jesus.

Also., God promised never to flood the whole earth again. And He even left a rainbow behind to remind us. Yet some people don't know God made that promise and movies have been made about the earth being flooded. But we can know that God promised not to flood the who earth again.

Knowing good guide lines like this will help believers to not be confused when reading the old and the new. It's also important for Christians today to KNOW they are not old covenant saints so the old covenant doesn't apply to us. We are all new covenant believers.

Much more to this but just wanted to post my findings. Also., I don't really have a favorite book of the Bible. I like to read them all.

I like Isaiah and the Psalms because you can so clearly see the Lord Jesus Christ there.

Matthew and John are my favorite gospels.

Romans and Hebrews are probably my favorite epistles. Galatians and 1&2 Corinthians is good too...

It seems to me that those who focus on the OT should probably read the NT and those who focus on the NT should probably read the OT. That way they could at least understand each other...

I really don't think you can understand the magnitude of the Salvation that is offered in the NT without reading the OT. Not that you would necessarily have to understand it in order to receive it...

Both the OT and the NT are the Word of God. During the ministry of Jesus he quoted only from the OT as that NT had not yet taken written form. You can't believe in on while ignoring the other as both are vital for spiritual edification.

Favorite OT book is the Song of Solomon. Favorite NT book is John. Romans is critical as well as for understanding God's plan of salvation.

Paul is my favorite biblical character. I find it very interesting that there are times that he says what he permits or does not permit in our conduct. I take that to mean that his opinion, even though inspired by the Holy Spirit, is not always necessarily true or binding by God in all circumstances or situations.

Lucy-P,

This is by no means a criticism. I really like some OT books like Psalms, Proverbs, Genesis, Ecclesiastes, Daniel, Isaiah and even Lamentations (especially if I've really been feeling down, because it is a reminder that there are worse things and also hope) but I can't say I've met someone who lists Ezekiel as a favorite.. Would you be willing to share some of the reasons? And perhaps a few of your favorite chapters? Thanks.

Love in Jesus,
Kelby

I wouldn't mind hearing the answer to this. I have really learned to like the major and minor prophets. And certainly, Ezekiel has some real gems in it, for us to learn.

But a favourite? I would love to hear why, too!

What is that exactly?
What is what exactly? The Principles of the Invisible Light
Wonder if he's talking about the book of Enoch.
Do you know the difference between 'ponder' and 'wonder'? Anyways, thank you for acknowledging that you were wondering and not pondering.

However it is referenced in the OT/NT (see Isa 29:18/34:16) or (Malachi 3:16)

Well I read both. One without the other is like a car without a motor and it’s wheels . Yea it’s still a car but it is left in a condition that can’t fulfill its purpose.
As for favorite book from each . That is hard I love them all . Genesis starts it all . How man failed to hit the mark in The Garden.
Then Genesis tells of how God showed Us Grace an did not slay man but clothed man and his wife. I could go on but I think you get the idea . I used to think that some books were just not as interesting as others like Samuel Kings ,and Chronicles . That thinking passed when I noticed how they lined up with The books of the prophets. How one prophet recorded the time they were used by The Lord by stating who was king and what year of The kings reign it was . That’s just fascinating. Also the wisdom books are awesome. Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Job . Those three books in my opinion should always be read together . There is a life time of treasure buried there . As for the NT the Gospels are all awesome. Each focused on a different fascist of the same story . I can’t say I like one more than the other . Also epistles especially Romans is like theology 101 they are all treasures in their own way. Agian I can go on . I just can’t say I have a favorite . All the books are unique and have their purpose.
I hope that makes sense.
Blessings Bill

Good luck understanding the NT without the OT.
