Default Why Sin Is Not Imputed To You

Romans 4:5-8 King James Version (KJV)

5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

We are saved by grace through faith, and it is our faith that is counted or credited for righteousness. Interesting that this is paralleled with what King David said, describing the blessedness of the man unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works.

David said, "Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin." God does not impute sin to us, this is what we experience now. This is covenant based. Romans 4 goes on to speak of this "blessedness", to whom it is applied, and it is those with faith (I.e; believers). This then means that God is not holding our sins against us.

Hebrews 10:15-18 King James Version (KJV)

15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,
    16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

We are in this covenant. People will often express how God's law is in their heart and in their mind, but how often do you see them express the latter part of the covenant? "Their sins and iniquities will I remember no more." I included verse 18 above, to bring emphasis to the fact that our sins have experienced remission (or have been remitted), and there is no more offering for our sins because Jesus is the sacrifice that paid its penalty.

Sin is no longer imputed to us, and the reason for this is multifaceted.

    1. Jesus paid the penalty for all sin (hence it is not held against us because its already been paid for; the atonement).
    2. It is part of the covenant we are under (Hebrews 10:15-17)
    3. The blood of Jesus cleanses us of all sin, of all unrighteousness (turning our sins of scarlet as white as snow).

This post isn't going into what we do with sin, holiness, and righteousness. Living godly, and so on. It is just meant to inform us of the covenant we are under, and that we are that blessed man that God doesn't impute sin and does forgive our iniquities. How blessed we are!

In a blood covenant between two parties, which the new covenant is, everything that one party has becomes the other party's and vice versa. Thus our sins were imputed to Christ, and his righteousness was imputed to us. In other words, an exchange. It's interesting that the Greek word καταλλαγή that is used in Romans 5:11 (translated atonement) and 2 Corinthians 5:18-19 (translated reconciliation) means an exchange.

    G2643 καταλλαγή katallage (kat-al-lag-ay') n.
    1. an exchange

It certainly makes no human sense since there is nothing like "imputation of goodness" here on earth. On earth we can't give someone or take from someone goodness and rightness. Even if a judge comes down with a wrong verdict (and that happens all the time here) and declares someone is innocent when they are not... the fact remains that the person IS STILL guilty and carries that guilt for their whole life.

Not so when Jesus imputes His righteousness on us and TAKES our sin from us nailing it to the cross. Only IN Jesus can we truly be declared 100% righteous. So much so that we can stand before God having been declared righteous and not guilty of sin ANYMORE.

Takes our sin.... gives us His righteousness. The GREAT exchange!

It's like tossing a good apple in with a bushel of bad apples and the good apple makes all the bad ones good instead of the way we're used to it working where the bad apple makes the whole bushel bad.

Whatever touches the flesh of the sin offering becomes holy:

25"The sin offering is to be slaughtered before the Lord in the place the burnt offering is slaughtered; it is most holy"
27"Whatever touches any of the flesh will become holy"-Leviticus 6:25,27

Jesus is the sin offering. Anybody who touches him becomes holy. Jesus was different that way. He touched unholy people and they became holy. In our economy we touch an unholy thing and we become like it. When Jesus touches an unholy thing it becomes like him.

That certainly seems to be true...see Mat 9v20 where the woman touched the hem of Jesus' garment and was made whole v22. It is a total reversal of our human situation !!! good post Ralph.

    Romans 3:

22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe ...

    ...

24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

    25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

The better alternative is "Why Righteousness is Imputed To You".

It has to be, if we are to be saved. We must have the righteousness of Christ to attain the perfection that God requires.

"Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." (Matthew 5:48)

    The simplicity found in Christ...

    a. By faith the blood is applied <--when I see the blood I will pass over you (in judgment)
    b. By faith all my sins are nailed to the cross as he became sin for me
    c. By faith he bore my curse upon the tree when he became a curse for me (Galatians)
    d. By faith his righteousness without the deeds/works of the law are imputed to my account
    e. By grace through faith I have been born of INCORRUPTABLE seed from above
    f. By grace through faith I have been redeemed by the blood (bought back from sin and the bondage of sin)
    g. By faith I have been sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise unto the day of redemption
    I. By faith I have been eternally justified by the faith of Christ (rendered innocent)
    h. By faith I have been sanctified positionally in Christ eternally (Hebrews)
    J. By the faith that Christ began, finishes and completes in me I am kept by the power of God.

They are no longer imputed to us because they have been placed on Christ, that is why the Father did not place every single sin of the world on Jesus. Because if He would of He would be an ubrighteous judge for sending people to hell for sins that Christ paid for.
John 6:63, 65 "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life....65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

I do not at all understand the mystery of grace--only that it meets us where we are but does not leave us where it found us. Anne Lamott

Thanks for chiming in, but lets see what scripture says.

1 John 2:2 King James Version (KJV)

2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

On the contrary, God would not be unrighteous for judging people for their disbelief in the Son of God (the sin of unbelief) and therefore through their unbelief they are not taking hold of the promise of eternal life through Christ Jesus. Our righteousness is one of faith, and the atonement is only applied to those who believe. That is the caveat. Repentance, and faith, to believe in the One the Father sent.

Jesus died for the world, He came not to condemn it but save it. Those that are saved are those that believe. The people whose sins will not be imputed to them, are those in a covenant of grace with God. Those that will be judged are judged because without Christ are they already condemned.

John 3:18 King James Version (KJV)

18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

An equally important discussion, but I find that a revelation of His grace and no condemnation grounds us in Christ. God's word says that sin will not have dominion over us who are not under the law but grace. In knowing of our right standing with God, and that sin is not imputed to us, it too leads to victorious living as we contemplate all that is ours in Christ.
