"First of all, we don;t even like God. We like ourselves. He tells us not to do something, and we do it. He tells us to do something, and we don't. That is our nature. We are so wicked at the root that He has to tell us not to use His name as a swear word! We ignore Him, don't talk to Him and run from Him as if He meant us harm.
Our attitude is-I will live my life, my way, with whom I want and where I want. No one will tell me what to do, where to go, how to live my life or how not to live it. He sends prophets to warn us. We kill them. He sends us pastors. We vote them out. He came down to visit us and be with us. We ate His fish sandwiches, accepted the healings and enjoyed the miracles. Then we killed Him.
Why doesn't He just wipe us off the face of the earth? So He promised He wouldn't do it with a flood again. Well then how about fire or spontaneous combustion?
But God doesn't quit. He says, "OK, I could stomp on them and give them what they deserve. My wrath builds up daily against them. Here is what I will do. Son, you go down there and show them who I am. Show them how to live. Show them the way. Live a perfect, holy life. Then, give yourself over to the beasts and let them kill you. While they are killing you, I will place all their sins on you. Then I will pour out my wrath against sin and punish you instead of them. You will die instead of them. Three days later, I will raise you up and then bring you back here.
God loves me! A wretch! A worm! He would rather punish His Son than see me go to hell."

I think that one of the biggest reasons why so many people reject God is fear. I've often heard it said that anger is not a primary emotion, but a secondary one. That means that when you feel angry about something - anything - it's always in response to a prior emotion. In my opinion and experience, the primary emotion is often (but not always) fear. As the old saying goes, "Mankind fears what it doesn't understand, and they hate what they fear." Or, to quote a more recent example...

"Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate. Hate...leads to suffering." ;)

Where God is concerned, so many people have been raised to believe that God is some kind of impersonal force that's far too big for mere mortals to relate to, much less have a relationship with (a clear contradiction of His truth). Contrary to popular belief, this viewpoint isn't because of sinners for the most part...it's because of corruption within the church. Satan realized long ago that he couldn't defeat Christians from the outside, so he infiltrated the ministry from within, and slowly began twisting it. Power struggles and vanity soon manifested, and for over 2,000 years the body of Christ has been derailed by the occasional "poison pill". We spend so much time condemning sinners (rather than the sin itself) and each other, that far fewer people are led to Christ in love.

The plain simple fact of the matter is that ever since Jesus left, the church has been collectively striving to do things its own way. God said for us to love ourenemies, but how many people (much less churches) do you know who'd openly welcome someone dressed like a Goth into their sanctuary, let alone their hearts? Jesus hung out with hookers, alcoholics, and cheaters...and it was the religious people who had the biggest problem with Him. In two millennia, much has changed...but there's also a lot that hasn't, and that's why so many turn away in disgust. People will not submit to a God they believe hates them, nor will they trust Someone they don't think really loves them.
