I look through the pages of the bible and can't help thinking that its unfair that some people in the bible had such clear revelations of God. Jacob, Moses, Paul, Adam, Mary. These people were spoken to directly, by God. Or by angels. Or were given visions.

God has never spoken to me, at least not audibly. I perceive that I have thoughts that are foreign to my usual way of thinking, which I often attribute to having come from God. But how can I be sure of this?

All I would want is a few words. "Luke, hello, this is God. Have a nice day". Surely that is not hard for God to do.

The standard Christian response is that God speaks to us through His word, and we have the Holy Spirit now to communicate with us. And also that we shouldn't question God's ways.

But I just find God's apparent complete silence for the past 2000 years quite eery, and disturbing, and I want to know why God would not just say a few words to us.

Hi Sharp,
Jesus does speak even today to his people. He still keeps on healing and is continually "keeping" us safe unto eternal life. I agree that it is not usual to hear the audible voice. If you look at my witnessing statements you will see that Jesus spoke several words to me. But he is constantly working in everyone's life, well everyone who is to be saved.
Please accept this as a teaching. Jesus won't come and hit you over the head with a baseball bat. Think about this. If God really wanted to He could come down at any time and do miracle after miracle until the whole world had no choice but to know of Him and His almightiness. But His way is different. We are called to believe, not to know.Just start believing. He is almighty, the rain, the car starting, or not starting, the computer etc. When ever something illogical happens around me I know that spiritual activity is happening. I really prick up my ears. Mostly I become aware of something and act according to scripture.
If your being saved is a problem that you can not find comfort in I suggest you go to a Pentacostal church and have hands laid on you. Because speaking in tongues is given to those who need this gift to believe. Maybe you need this gift to get you over the line.

Hi Sharp;
Just because God has never spoken directly to someone does not mean he does'nt know they exist.

God speaks to us in many ways. For example, God uses his anointed Pastors, Preachers, Ministers to speak to us from the Pulpit. Sometimes we may be going through some trial or just simple problems. We pray about our situation, and suddenly from the pulpit we get our answer. This happens at every service in my Church. The Preacher may even say beforehand, or during his message "I don't know how I got on this subject, but God ask me to say this or that". Happens all the time.

Another verse that let's us know another way God speaks to us, is this; Isaiah 28 v 11 " For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to his people" (also, Isaiah 33 v 19).

There are two kinds of speaking in tongues God uses among his people.

1."Tongues" which is simply say a person only Speaks English, and does not know any other language, then one day that Person all of a sudden can speak perfect Spanish, French, Tagalog, Chinese etc. During a service I under the Power of The Spirit of God. Maybe someone there is fluent in that language., and will interpret what the other is saying. It will usually be a message to the congregation and God does this to take away any unbelief that it really did'nt come from him. I have witnessed this in services a few times.

Unknown Tongues; is simply speaking in a heavenly language know only to God. Usually it is glorifying God and the person speaking this has no control of what He/ She is saying. God speaks to that person. All this is done as a "sign" to The Church from The Lord...

Hey Sharp,

It's interesting you raise this question. For a while now I have really been struggling with the notion of 'Trusting God' not because I don't believe, but because I've never really felt an answer from Him when I pray.

This morning on our way to church we had a 'Point of Grace' CD playing and one of the songs was all about how we still doubt, when we really don't need to. I remember listening to the lyrics and being really moved...and then we got to church and the sermon was all about prayer, and 'what is prayer?'.

You might think I'm kind of going off the topic of your original question here, but let me elaborate :)

I think God DOES talk to us, just in a variety of ways. Sometimes we can pray and feel like we never get an answer (because He might not answer instantly- or even audibly). I can tell you I don't ever think I have heard God AUDIBLY speak to me, but I KNOW He speaks to me.

Sometimes we tend to put God in a box. Like we pray about something and think God should give us answer X (because well, that would be the logical answer) but then God gives us answer Y. Sometimes we don't even realise that answer Y is the answer and so we sit there waiting, getting more and more frustrated, when in fact the answer is actually right in front of us.

The thing to remember is we are human, and so we think of logical answers. God may not always answer the way we expect. Sometimes His answers are so left-field we're sitting there going 'Are you serious Lord?', but if you obey and trust Him, you'll see that He really does have a plan.

I don't know how many times I've had things happen, which have allowed other things to happen, and then in turn opened other doors (like a domino effect). It's not until after it's all said and done, I look back and go 'OOOH now I see why that happened. God needed this first thing to happen so I could be in this situation now. Thanks God'. At the time it doesn't make sense, but eventually it does. This can be especially hard to understand when some of the answers God gives us are ones we don't want to hear, or result in us having to do things we don't want to do. But we gotta learn that God sees the bigger picture, even when we can't.

I think if I can offer you any advice it's to open your heart to be more receptive of ways God can speak to you. He might speak to you through another person, through a passage of scripture, through a situation/encounter, or through a stirring in your spirit. He might not speak to you audibly, but if you're aware you will KNOW when and how He speaks to you. So pray that He will open your heart and enable you to be aware and listen.

Lately, I've also been challenged to thank God when I acknowledge Him answering my prayer. I find it easy to go ' oh that's the answer. This must be God answering my prayer' then get so caught up in going full steam ahead with His answer, I forget to actually thank and acknowledge Him for answering me.

I was just having this conversation only hours ago with Hubby, so this is another challenge for me. I hope sharing with you what He has revealed to me, helps you some. I hope that makes sense.

Katie

Miss Kate;
Great answer Ma'am!! We have a saying here that says this; "He may not come right when you call him, but he is always there, right on time." Meaning his time...not necessarily our time.

Sometimes our prayers may not be answered for weeks, months, or even years. Our FAITh that God will hear us and our faithfulness to him is what gets the prayer request heard and answered. Again God Bless....

God does speak to His people. God just speaks in different ways than we are expecting Him to, so we often miss it.

Sharp: one of the ways God still speaks to us today is, like in times of old, through our dreams. Understand that dreams of full color are from God; dreams of muted color are from our own soul and dreams that are black and white are form the devil. Dreams are metaphorical in their meaning, just like they were in the Bible, OT.

There are MANY ways that God speaks to us today. We just need to learn how to listen! John Paul Jackson, of Streams Ministries, has a wonderful course titled "The Art of Hearing God". It is worth your time, energy and money to go to the Streams website and check out to see if the course will be offered in your area...and then GO. You will not regret spending, time, energy or money for this awesome teaching.

Cults who preach their new "revelation" is from God when it certainly is not are in error. God speaks to us but He doesn't contradict His Word which we have a sound understanding of from the time of Jesus and the Apostles to the present.

I doubt the Lord will speak to you audibly. I’m sure, though, he speaks to you all the time.

I think the two reasons we don't hear from God is one we don't listen and two people talk way too much.

People know too much as well. (I'm one of those people and I hope it changes)

Thanks for your responses.

I too have often thought that God has spoken to me through thoughts and other people.

But what if this has just been good luck or chance.

What I'm getting at is why doesn't God make it obvious, instead of giving us subtle clues and hints and remaining completely silent.

Why not just speak? I just have no answer for this.

I can see God saying, "why not just listen?" When God doesn't speak to us our way in our time we then conclude that He isn't speaking or is obscure. God speaks clearly. We are the ones that make it fuzzy.

I think I understand what your saying about why God doesn't speak to His people anymore. Yes I understand that he speaks to us through His Spirit and through scripture aswell as other subtle ways, But what about when He ate with Abraham, or wrestled with Jacob, or spoke with Job? The examples could go on and on. But when God started His New Covenant He no longer delt with man in the old way. Instead of God dwelling here He provided us a way to Him through Jesus with the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

I think that there are two reasons for this feeling.
1. We need to walk by faith and not by sight.
2. Jesus said it was good that He went away because the Father would send the Holy Spirit. We moved from the theophanies, to Emmanuel, to God dwelling in us.

There are times it came to my thoughts also, but I just ask myself, am I worthy to hear His voice?
Even Moses on that burning bush, he hid his face because he was afraid to look at God.
Paul, on his journey, when a light on heaven flashed on him , he fell to the ground and heard a voice, but when he open his eyes he could no longer see anymore.
John in Revelation , fell at His feet that though he was dead, when he saw Him.

So I was like thinking I am an ant, who desires to see and hear the voice of a giant.

God uses people before to make His will known but right now, through the death of Jesus we can communicate to Him directly through our spirit.

John 16: 16
In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.

Instead of wanting God to speak to you directly, have you asked yourself… am I worthy to face Him when the time comes?

I often think the same way. I know that I hear him by the a thoughts that I know did not come from myself. I do want to hear him clear and loud but he has never spoken to me that way. I trust God and I have faith that he is real no matter what. I trust in the leading of his sprit to mine and I walk by faith and not by sight. If I get a urge to speak something and I know it is not from me I will keep praying and then be obedient and speak out. There are decisions in my life that I feel God is approving me to do but sometimes I would like to hear him loud and clear so I know I am not making the wrong decision. But until I do hear that voice loud and clear I am just going to keep walking by faith, praying and trusting that he is the one guiding my decisions :)
