Prov 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
Wisdom is the application of the knowledge and the word that we have been taught. We apply that knowledge when by faith to the situation that we find ourselves in. God provides in His plan the opportunity to do it. The result of wisdom (or the application of what we have been taught) is that we get understanding, something we did not have before. In this process of wisdom, we take the knowledge that we have been given and apply it by faith and it results in an understanding we did not have and it converts what we have been taught and makes it experiential.
The principal thing in our lives is wisdom and the purpose of wisdom is to get understanding. Many try to understand the knowledge they have without applying it. This causes lots of problems in the mind and heart because their understanding did not come from God's wisdom.
Example: Let' say that everything was going wrong and nothing was working out as planned. You did everything you thought was right but it all fell apart. So what do you do? Do you get angry and frustrated or do you look to God for wisdom? He has promised that if any lack wisdom you need only to ask. So you humble yourself before God and ask for wisdom and you remain quiet until it comes. When that wisdom comes you apply it by faith without hesitation even if it does not make sense to your natural perception of what you are trying to accomplish. The just shall live by faith and that wisdom is the will of God and all you need to do is to let patience work in your life (Jm 1:4).
This is how we walk in wisdom and toward them that are without it (Col 4:5). When the scripture teach us that if any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God who giveth to all men liberally and abraideth not (Jm 1:5), we are asking God to give us what we need to apply in the situation we are in. When God gives it, it will be a wisdom we have to apply by faith, so that we can have an understanding that goes beyond what we think or know about the situation (Eph 3:20). Wisdom takes us from understanding the situation from human viewpoint and gives us divine viewpoint or as God see it and what He wants to impart to that situation. Personally, we are not even involved, we just impart what God gives from divine viewpoint and this becomes God's provision and bread for the situation.
We can know that wisdom that comes from God because of (Jm 3:17)...
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
This wisdom is not conventional or naturally oriented to the flesh (Jm 3:15) but it is justified by the one who benefits from it (Lk 7:35). God has all knowledge and knows exactly what is needed in the situation. He is beautiful in situation (Ps 48:2).
