We all know the story of Jesus overturning the tables of the moneychangers and running those who sold pigeons out of his temple...

So, yesterday, I went with my mom to a 'rummage sale' that was inside a 'presbyterian' church (I believe) that had all sorts of things for sale...

We were actually going to buy plants so that I could plant them in her yard, but my mom saw the sign and wanted to go in, so we did...

Before going in, I felt the Lord inspire me to want to run the people out of the place asking/demanding; "WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN GOD'S CHURCH?" BUt as I went in I saw Thomas a Kempis' "Immitation of Christ" for a quater so..I bought three...so that I could give them to people I know so that they can perhaps more clearly perceive the Bible, as it helped me when I was a junior in college...

But then I thought to look at the other stuff for sale in the church--"just like a yard sale, people's junk for sale in the church" and I started getting spiritually sick so I left quickly but did get the three books...three copies of the Immitation...

SO is it wrong for churches to have yard sales/ or sell things?

I know a lot of churches have stores in them now, where you can buy Christian books, cards, etc... but even in thinking about that I get sick!?

God bless
tony

ps...If the spirit continues to convict me I may return the books either to the church or to a recycling bin...but don't know...

*LOL*

Personally I don't think they are an abomination however, I do believe that if everyone inside the church were to pay their 10% as well as participate in special offerings, most churches would not need yard sales and bake sales just to pay the bills.

I see nothing wrong in them...
nor a bookstore in a church.
Our church in fact has a bookstore, and it's in no way to make extra cash as all the money goes to people in need that comes in from the bookstore.

I do not think yard sales are wrong for a church to do!

In the book 1 Kings, Elijah used what the widow woman already had to bless her!

This scripture is talking about churches being centered on making a profit.

God does not live in temples made with human hands!

We are the temple of God, His Spirit lives in us!

We are the church that Jesus is building!

A church centered on Him, My house shall be a house of prayer!

How many churches collect tithes but fail to use it for what the word says it used for?

How many Pastors have made more of a career chioce, than listen to a call from God, to be a Pastor?

How many churches claim sings and wonders and charge you to see them?

How many books are there out there, when you need only one, The Bible?

Bottom line,

It looks like most churches have fallen away from being centered on Jesus!

Most of the focus is on making money!

Churches have become inverted, never even leaving the four walls.

Claiming to know the way to God, but yet charging a high price for something that was suppose to be free!

The fruit they bear, speaks for itself!

The church as we know it today,

Has become a clanging symbol,

a noise nobody want to hear!

They make the cross of no effect!

They make it very hard to understand why Jesus came in the first place!

They confuse people about the Grace of God!

Thier fruit is that of the Pharisees!

Have you ever been to a church where you had to look just right,

say just the right thing, jump through the right hoops, and hang with the right people?

These churches are always getting you to look at what is wrong with you!

They are sure to clean the outside of the cup, but fail to clean the inside!

You must look like them,

You must act like them!

There is no freedom,

Where ever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom!

What freedom is there in bondage?

Abraham had two children,

One from the slavewife, man attempt to bring about Gods will, the first covenant. (works)

And one from Gods promise, the freeborn wife, the second covenat! (Grace)

We are saved by who we believe in Jesus, we don't have to earn it!

Nor do we have to pay for it.

We must Believe in Jesus and have our faith in Him!

I bought a green polyester leisure suit at a church sale that would definitely have been considered an abomination.

My church had a few yard sales to raise money for missions. We're going to Arizona in July.

I do not feel that a church should sell anything inside of the building where you worship, that area is set up for a divine purpose. When you sell things out of a church building, you are sending a double message to the people in the world. Unfortunatly people base our God on what we do, I have had people say unless you have money they would not go into a church because of such practices. I had a function in a park for a community and I was giving out food, the first thing the people side was how much does the food cost? I told them nothing, the second thing they said was the churches around here sell food. Is this a message we want to send people about our God?
However the word does say sell something if you don't have anything to give.
If we want to raise money we for the church we should sell something off of the primises of the church, while informing the people of the cause in which we are doing it for.

Note: If Jesus turned tables in a temple because of such behavior, there is something wrong with it. Knowing that we the people of God is the church does not negate the fact that our worship center should be defile to gain money for the church. The practice of selling things out of the church building, be littles our God's ability to provide for us as believers in the eyes of man.

What is the difference between what the jews did...trying to help people not have to carry their sacrifices long distances, and exchanging their coins so that they could give money to the temple without having a secular image; and people who even sell Christian books inside a church? The principles truly seem to be the same...

Also, 'selling junk in a church' just kind of seems wrong...would you let a pastor sell you junk from a pulprit?--

I guess the initial question becomes, since our bodies are the temple and not a physical building, is the place where Christians meet not to be regarded as holy whatsoever???

But the same claim could have been made with Jesus--"you are the temple and not this physical building, why then do you get mad when people make it a marketplace?"

Perhaps I should have said, "do yardsales make churches marketplaces?, the inevitable answer is yes...I do not see how anyone can deny that.

God bless

its not an abomination because a church building is just a building. The real Temple is in Israel and all other temples/altars/high places are forbidden .
