Dear friends,

Mere Christianity means different things to different Christians.

C.S. Lewis wrote about mere Christianity.

I think we should seek to be mere Christians.

However, mere Christianity inevitably gets defined in traditional terms.

Which tradition do you think best expresses your mere Christian

1. to me, being a mere Christian means being an Evangelical Protestant

2. to me, being a mere Christian means being a Roman Catholic

3. to me, being a mere Christian means being an Eastern Orthodox Christian

4. to me, being a mere Christian means being an Oriental Orthodox Christian

5. to me, being a mere Christian means being an Old Catholic Christian

6. to me, being a mere Christian means being an Anglican (Episcopalian)

7. to me, being a mere Christian means being a Baptist

8. to me, being a mere Christian means being a born-again Christian

9. to me, being a mere Christians means being non-denominational

10. to me, being a mere Christian means being Independent

11. to me, being a mere Christian means being a Pentecostal

12. to me, being a mere Christian means being a Unitarian

13. to me, being a mere Christian means being a Messianic Jew

14. to me, being a mere Christian means being a fundamentalist

15. to me, being a mere Christian means being a dispensationalist

16. to me, being a mere Christian means being a Calvinist

17. to me, being a mere Christian means being a Lutheran

18. to me, being a mere Christian means being a Methodist

19. to me, being a mere Christian means being _________ (fill in the blank)

Which of these terms would you define as being "mere Christianity" to you?

God bless you. always, Scott R. Harrington

Well, Lewis' idea of mere Christianity is quite broad. You criticize him for being 'traditional'?

I didn't criticize C.S. Lewis at all. I just noted that inevitably, people will rely on some tradition beyond generic Christianity. There really is no such thing as generic Christianity; inevitably, some tradition is followed. Where Christians differ, it is in the way(s) they read certain Scripture(s). Which distinguish them from a mere Christianity. Even C.S. Lewis was some kind of Protestant, not generic Christian without making any general faith statement. Some tradition will shape the way we approach the Christian Faith. Generally, though, all Christians could or should support the Nicene Creed. It's just a question of whether or not they add "FILIOQUE" to the Nicene Creed. Take care!

That's a very excellent book and it's definitely the best apologetics work I've ever read. Lewis had a background in atheism and later became enamoured in rationalism (Which is a skill that's obviously lacking in some of our Churches these days).........Rationalistic Atheists probably benefit from the book the most......because Lewis understands that type of thinking, he got out of it, and makes excellent rational arguments for Christianity.......I'd imagine it's been quite an eye opener for a lot of people.
