Friends:
"God has acted for our benefit in giving His Son for us. That is love in deed and in truth.
And now Paul can add, "He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, will
he not also give us all things with him?" With Christ all has been given to us. We should
note how Paul here speaks in universals, in words that exclude any limitation. There is no
condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus; no power can stand against us; none can
bring any charge against us; nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. All is given to
us through Christ; all things must work together for good to those who love God; in all
things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
"Paul further asks, "Who shall bring any charge against God's elect?" To bring charge
against God's elect is an act without basis. He who does so fights against God himself.
It is not against us, but against God's eternal purpose, that he rises up. Theos ho dikaion,
"It is God who justifies." When God moves to effect His eternal purpose, who can hinder
Him? There is a limitless security in the fact that all that happens to the Christian in this
world has its basis in God's eternal act of election.
"And another question: "Who is to condemn?" There is no condemnation to those who
are in Christ Jesus. All that Christ has done had the purpose of freeing us from condemna-
tion. His death had that purpose, and even more His resurrection (cf.5:10)."
