The answer is in the verse before that:

1 Thessalonians 4:3 *For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:

No sex outside of marriage.

Yes, it's wrong, because you have to think impurely if you do it "to yourself."

Here's the deal: Gen 38 Then Judah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife, and perform your duty as a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother."

9Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so when he went in to his brother's wife, he wasted his seed on the ground in order not to give offspring to his brother. 10But what he did was displeasing in the sight of the LORD; so He took his life also.

So, yes, masterbation is spilling your seed upon the ground.

Fornication means any form of sexual impurity....so Yes it is wrong, plus your pleasing yourself with this sexuality of the body.

There is only one way to be pure before God, and that is to be filled with, led by, consumed with the Holy Spirit.

While many will tell you to do this and don't do that, none of these things, which have the appearance of Godliness, are of any value against the sins of the flesh.

It all comes down to abiding in Jesus. Any sexual gratification is giving pleasure to the flesh. Sins come in three forms, these being the lusts of the flesh, the lusts of the eyes, and the pride of life.

If we are filled with the Spirit, then we will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. If we are consumed with Jesus, which is being consumed by His Spirit, then we will not fulfill the lusts of the eyes. If we abide in Him, which means we remain in His presence, we will not fulfill the pride of life, for true humility comes from knowing God.

The reason that the Law does not bring righteousness is that the Law can only work through the flesh, which is consumed in lusts and sin. The Spirit is not like this, and in truth if we are led by the Spirit, we put to death the deeds of the flesh.

All of this to say that you should not condemn yourself. Rather, seek God's face and His judgment and forgiveness and love.

That's really quite strange if you think that's how it works for a female. In any case, you totally missed the point of the story. His sin was that he disobeyed the command to give offspring to his brother, not that he wasted his seed.

In the Holy Bible NIV, 1 Thessalonians 4:3 - 4:6, It is God's will that you should be santified; that each of you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honourable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; and that in this matter no-one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you.

Everyone is correct although as I understand it, God wants men to plant their seed somewhere other than the ground. Also this means not impregnating more than one woman and if the brother to a man is alive or with God not impregnating her either or the Lord God will punish those men for all those sins.

This is how it seems to me, but it depends on what Bible you are reading from.

Onan was not guilty of masturbating. He committed what has been called coitus interruptus or early withdrawal. He took pleasure with the woman with no intent on impregnating her on behalf of his deceased brother, her husband. He did not fulfill his duty.

Spilling or WASTING seed is sin. All seed is to be for PROCREATION. ...So either way~~

In Onan's case, disobeying God was his sin.
