I get uncomfortable when Christians start talking about spiritual gifts, because it seems to me often it is about pride, not service. In other words, it seems to me some people get puffed up with pride because they think they have this spiritual gift, or that gift, and when that happens, they start causing pain to those around them.

My pastor made an interesting point this morning in his sermon. He pointed out that our gifts are not meant to serve ourselves. Our gifts are meant to serve those around us.

Amen Brother! For example, the gift of "speaking in tongues" was given so that the Word of God could be disseminated throughout the entire world. At the time of Pentecost, most if not all of the Apostles spoke the same language. A perfect example of a "gift" meant to serve others.

Thanks for the post. :)

Don't be fooled and confused into believing "The Gift of Tongues" is the same as tongues as the initial sign or evidence of tongues of receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost. Notice not some but ALL that were Filled in the upper room spoke in tongues as the Spirit gave utterance! God does not change ! Jesus same yesterday, today , and FOREVER.. The Holy Spirit is still being poured out the sameway today as in the upper room !You will always receive the sign or evidence of tongues when you are filled with the Holy Ghost ! You are not filled because you repent and repeat some "sinners prayer" and some preacher says you are filled and saved !!

well i have never spoken in 'other languages' but i know that i am filled with the holy spirit. have been since i became convicted and repented...
what happened in Acts was the first infilling of the holy spirit and they spoke in "other languages" ... it wasn't a mumble jumble thing like the 'toronto blessing'... ick

you cannot decide who is and who isn't filled with the holy spirit.

All Christians are filled with holy spirit. By definition, that is what a Christian is. Someone who has acted on Romans 10:9. They are born again, filled with holy spirit, endued with power from on high, saved, made whole. The terms are synonymous.

Tongues are not the only sign of the Holy Spirit. there are many examples in the Bible of other ways, not just like in the book of Acts. Daniel and many other had the Holy Spirit and did not speak in tongues.

Daniel 4:7-9
New King James Version (NKJV)
7 Then the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers came in, and I told them the dream; but they did not make known to me its interpretation. 8 But at last Daniel came before me (his name is Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god; in him is the Spirit of the Holy God), and I told the dream before him, saying: 9 “Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, because I know that the Spirit of the Holy God is in you, and no secret troubles you, explain to me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and its interpretation.

Psalm 51
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me away from Your presence,
And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

12 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation,
And uphold me by Your generous Spirit.
13 Then I will teach transgressors Your ways,
And sinners shall be converted to You.

14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,
The God of my salvation,
And my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness.
15 O Lord, open my lips,
And my mouth shall show forth Your praise.
16 For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it;
You do not delight in burnt offering.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit,
A broken and a contrite heart—
These, O God, You will not despise.

All spiritual gifts are given by god to be used for his purpose. It is him working through a person. I I lay hands on domeone and heal them we praise god. Its nothing I did on my own. Some can speak in tounges but won't understand what they said but god will give someone else the meaning. That is from god. However there are dome radicals who by listening to others speak in tongues memorize the words and repeat them to make themselves look spiritual. Anytime god chooses to use you for his purpose it is a blessing and gift. Tongues is the holy spirit using your voice. Any spirit needs a body to work through. That's why holy spirit came in form of a dove when jesus was baptised. Needed a body to be visible to the eye. Gifts of the spirit shouldn't scare you away. The disciples healed, cast out devils, spoke in languages they didn't know. God works the same today as he did then. Its just now days we question is the person for real or out for money or fame.

really? all Christians are to have an "ACTS Experience"?

Acts 2
The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

~

did the following things happen to you when you believed?

do these things take place in your church every Sunday?: EVERYTHING that is described taking place at Pentecost must apply to what people claim as their Holy Ghost baptism today, or NONE of it does.

a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.

what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language

each of us hears them in his own native language

we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!

I think it is important to talk about spiritual gifts because there are so many varying and different views of what they are and how they are used. But the point is they are to be used to serve. Not to brag about. Not to demean others. Also how can you tell someone that GOD can't fill someone with the Holy Spirit without them speaking in tongues?? I'm sure the event of being filled with the Holy Spirit is different for every believer. GOD is almighty and HE decides what will happen inside of you when you are baptized by the Holy Spirit. I've heard that for some they could barely tell that they were filled but their outward lives exhibited spiritual fruit. Some are so overcome that they talk in some strange language for long periods of time. GOD is awesome, the Holy Spirit is amazing and there is no way you can put them in a box because they won't fit!!

I like to let people know that they don't have to try to compare their experience with GOD with others experiences. We are all unique and have unique experiences. I won't argue that tongues seems to be the most popular way for others to see evedince of the in-filling. But to try and say it is the only way to know for sure if you have been filled is incorrect.
