What about the Roman Catholic religion and her daughters?
I asked myself this question when I learned who the Great Whore was (See Chapter 7). What could possibly be so bad that a term like that is used to describe her?
And didn't the "daughters" (Protestant, Methodist, Lutheran, etc.) actually drop away from the Catholic church because they disagreed with the Vatican?
The Roman Catholic church was founded around 325 AD. They taught (falsely), and still do, that the Bishops of the church were "spiritual successors" to the original 12 apostles, in particular the Apostle Peter, and that they had the right to discern true or false doctrine. At that time, they changed the baptism taught by Jesus and His apostles, including Peter, and they indoctrinated a false concept called the "trinity" that had been invented around 200 AD but was never taught by Jesus or the Apostles, or taught anywhere in the bible. They even attempt to deify the mother of Jesus. It's true that Mary was blessed to carry and give birth to Jesus, but she was simply a Jewish woman, not a God. They made it a crime punishable by death to attempt to actually read the bible for yourself and/or contradict the Roman Catholic church during the Dark Ages, and they have killed an estimated 68 million Christians over the years for refusing to bow to the false doctrine of the Roman Catholic church.
The following is a quote from a man who was raised in the Catholic church but left the church as an adult to pursue the real Truth.
On the question of salvation; "Unfortunately most Roman Catholics really don't know for sure what Rome's answers are. Most have a vague idea of a place called 'Purgatory.' They wander through life with an unfounded belief that, if their 'good works' outweigh their 'sins' then they get a ticket to heaven. Others believe that just being a Roman Catholic is all that is required to get to Heaven. Well, not directly to Heaven, but by way of an untold period of time in unmentionable pain and suffering in Purgatory. Its not a pretty picture of salvation. Not at all. One of the saddest laments of a priest friend (Novus Ordo type) is that Catholics no longer know their own faith!"
Let's take a look at what the Catholic believer has to do today in order to "receive" salvation.
The Vatican teaches that salvation is through the church.
According to the Catholic church you must do all of the following in order to receive salvation:

  • Confess your sins to a Roman Catholic priest.
  • "Receive" all appropriate Roman Catholic sacraments.
  • Believe that Grace comes only via Rome's sacraments, and only through Mary.
  • Buy or earn as many indulgences as possible so as to avoid Purgatory.
  • Believe that Grace can only be distributed to you by Mary.
  • Attend the Roman Catholic Mass on all Sundays and holy days.
  • Obey all of Rome's rules (i.e., precepts of the Church).
  • Be a member of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Submit yourself to the Pope.
The bible teaches that you must believe in Jesus and obey the Gospel for salvation, and that it's by the grace of God, not Mary or Rome, that we are saved. All of the above only make you subservient to the Roman Catholic church and do not ensure your place with God at all.
But, the Roman Catholic leaders today are even saying that you don’t really need to believe in Jesus Christ to be saved!
Article #841 of the Catechism says: "The Church's relationship with the Muslims. 'The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day.'" This means that the Catholic church believes that the Muslims will be saved just like anyone else even though Muslims don't believe in Jesus, and that they worship the same God that we all do even though Allah was originally a pagan moon god.
Muslims say you don’t need to believe in Jesus Christ to be saved! Muslims will admit that Jesus Christ was a true prophet, but deny that He was the Messiah (although some Western Muslims will say He was anointed), they will deny that He was God manifested in the flesh as of the Son of God (John 1:14), and they will deny that He died on the cross and rose again. That belief cannot be truth because Jesus Christ himself said He was the Messiah! John 4:26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. That would make Him a false prophet according to the Muslim beliefs! And, Jesus Christ himself said we have to believe in Him! John 8:24 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. We absolutely must believe that Jesus Christ was manifest in the flesh, was crucified for our sins and rose again. This is the gospel! Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. There is no salvation in any other name but Jesus! Not Mohammed, not Buddha; no other name...
Does the Catholic leadership read the same bible I do??? Sure doesn't look like it! No wonder God is angry with her...

Dear loveschild, If you want to read a brief summary of some of the worst false teachings of Roman Catholicism, see the section "Brief Orthodox Replies to the Innovations of the Papacy", in "Lives of the Pillars of Orthodoxy: St. Photios, St. Gregory Palamas, St. Mark of Ephesus. Copyright 1990, Holy Apostles Convent, Buena Vista, CO. Available for about 35 dollars from Amazon.com at GOOGLE. If you want to UNDERSTAND THE ORTHODOX CATHOLIC CHURCH, this book "LIVES OF THE PILLARS OF ORTHODOXY", is the best available book of Orthodox history and theology. God bless you.

PS Does Protestantism read the same Bible I do?
I read the OSB (Orthodox Study Bible) and the ONT (Orthodox New Testament), and I trust these Bibles more than the KJV, ESV, NIV, NASB, etc. though some of the Word of God is contained also in the NKJV, KJV, ESV, NIV, NASB, HCSB, REB, etc.

Agreed there are quite a few unsubstantiated claims and half truths in the article, like.

"Buy or earn as many indulgences as possible so as to avoid Purgatory."

"According to the Catholic church you must do all of the following in order to receive salvation"

"The Roman Catholic church was founded around 325 AD... And thats just some of them.

That's the thing, we wouldn't have an issue if you spoke the truth. But you haven't. You are either unwittingly reprinting lies about the Catholic Church or doing it on purpose. Either way it's still something quite sad.

What you post is indeed your business, if you post it in private. Once something hits the internet it's public domain, free to be criticized for as long as it remains.

I am a Christian, and I will point out things that are plain wrong in an article thats posted in order to disparage the Catholic Church. Nor have you spoken as the Bible teaches, the article simply made blanket accusations without quoting the Catechism or any historian, and when it did quote the Catechism it was in relation to Muslims. The article didn't even quote the Bible for it's rebuttal of the strawman it built, it simply said "the Bible says this".

it made me sad, I opened the thread hoping to learn more about the Catholic church. oh well back to my own research. you guys have any good sermons about church history I could listen to?

the title talked about the Catholic church which most Christians admit to be the oldest existing church and can trace back to the time of the apostles. her daughters would be the other Christians churchs. all are to be married to Christ.......

well so that others who open this thread leave with a little bit of truth I'll post some scripture for my brethren to read. lol :)

Matthew 16:18
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

Matthew 18:17
And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.

Acts 20:28
Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.

Romans 16:16
Greet one another with a holy kiss. The churches of Christ greet you.

1 Corinthians 7:17
[ Live as You Are Called ] But as God has distributed to each one, as the Lord has called each one, so let him walk. And so I ordain in all the churches.

1 Corinthians 12:28
And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.

1 Corinthians 14:12
Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.

Ephesians 1:20-23
New King James Version (NKJV)
20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.
22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Well, the Catholic Church isn't the Oldest Christian church. Keep in mind, the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church were One Church until the Great Schism. I'll look for some good Church History sites for you.

most of that stuff is true, raised catholic for 27 years, no longer, but there is some crazy stuff in there, my grandmother still puts Marys name above Christ, this article is pretty cool, one of many out there but of course there also many out there that try to refute it so whatever

We should note that the word petros could mean rock in Homer's time but in the time of the Bible, the word petros is always used to indicate "a piece or fragment of a rock such as a man might throw," as Zodhiates' Complete Wordstudy Dictionary New Testament explains, "Distinguished from the masculine petros is that petra is a mass of rock while petros is a detached stone or boulder, a stone that might be thrown or easily moved."

In the Bible the word petros does not occur besides the name Peter. The word petra, meaning mountain of a rock, is used about 15 times, and an additional 4 times in the construct
(petrodes), meaning rocky places, or literally rocky shapes (Mark 4:5, Matthew 13:5).

A petra is used to build houses in and on (Matthew 7:24, Luke 6:48) or hew sepulchers in (Matthew 27:51, Mark 15:46). It's also used to metaphorize someone's firmness or strength; the Septuagint uses it in 2 Samuel 22:2 in the familiar phrase "The Lord is my petra and my fortress." Paul refers to the Meribah event in 1 Corinthians 10:4, and compares Christ to the petra from which the waters flowed (Exodus 17:6).

Petra denotes a firm foundation and as such it serves as a metaphor for faith in Jesus Christ. Petros denotes a wobbly flint that won't supply any footing and can be tossed away at will. The most remarkable conjunction of these two words petros and petra is in the famous scene of Matthew 16:13-20:

In Matthew 16:18 Jesus asks the disciples what they think of Him. The men rattle off a list of heroes but only Peter submits that Jesus is the Son of the Living God. Jesus responds by saying that he couldn't have obtained that insight from any human teacher, or even have figured it out by himself, but that it was given to him by God. And then He says to Peter: You are petros (a small wobbly and easily movable stone), but on that petra (the unmovable faith that is not from man but from God) I'm going to build My church.

Just how wobbly and easily movable that stone actually is, Peter readily demonstrates by forwarding the daftest proposals, by jumping overboard to walk on water while his faith remains in the boat, and ultimately, by denying that he was ever associated with Jesus after His arrest.

The Bible is unique in many ways but also because there's not a single perfect person in it. If salvation had been up to any one of the major players of the Bible, or even up to ourselves, we would be in deep trouble. But with that great gift of God, the gift upon which Jesus builds His church and grafts His new creation, we can wake up each day and marvel at our fortune to be able to believe so great a promise.

The name Petra means Rock and symbolizes stability. The name Peter means Stone and symbolizes instability.

Was wondering when someone was going to bring out the whole Petros/Petra canard. It's been quite thoroughly debunked in these forums and really doesn't help your argument. For a detailed Catholic response (including Scripture) I'd recommend this link:Peter the Rock

Basically the main thing to remember is that the difference in Petros/Petra discussed in your article don't really apply in the Koine Greek of the time of Jesus, but only in the older Attic Greek dialect dating back to the time of Homer. During the time period in question, they were synonyms. The only difference was that since Peter was a guy, you had to use the masculine form of the word Rock when referring to him because of Greek grammatical rules. But going even further beyond that, we also know that Our Lord wasn't even speaking Greek to Peter at that moment, He was speaking Aramaic. And in Aramaic the conversation is even more clear.
"You are Kepha (Rock in Aramaic) and on this Kepha I will build my church..."

dscherck thanks for the link will check it out when I get a chance. there is so much slander and libel about different denominations that is like going through muck to find truthful ones that represent the people who believe and not the trash talking of people who don't about those who do or how have since left that faith through some misunderstanding or personal offense.
